2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 5th Sunday in Ordinary time: In the first reading, Isaiah urges us in the name of the Lord to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. If we do so, he assures us, the Lord will hear and answer our cries for help in time of need. THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE - As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today's Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It's only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week's readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke. This Week: Saturday, February 4th/ Sunday, February 5th, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time FOCUS: We Are Called to be Salt and Light for Others As we continue in ordinary time, we are challenged to see it as a blessed opportunity to share and witness to others through the daily events of life. We are to be a light for others illuminating the way, and salt for others giving flavor to their lives; drawing them closer to God through the witness of our lives. Reflections on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Isaiah reminds us that in showing concern and love for others, we are like a light for all people a light that radiates the very glory of God. Saint Paul explains that real faith comes from the power of God and not mere human reason. In the Gospel, Jesus uses two powerful images to describe true discipleship: salt and light. Psalm -- The just man is a light in the darkness to the upright (Psalm 112). Second Reading -- My message to you, says Paul, was not clever words of wisdom but the proclamation of Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-5). Gospel -- You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. In your good deeds your light shines before others, leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). We will be meeting in the Parish Hall (beneath the school) at 12 noon on Wednesday, March 15. We will again be serving corned beef (in honor of St Patrick) and lasagna (in honor of St Joseph). All parishioners and their guests are welcome. Come prepared to celebrate with the Irish and the Italians. The price for parishioners is $18 and $20 for others. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. - Matthew 5:14 The Hill of Crosses in the country of Lithuania is a good place to pray. But that s not all. For hundreds of years, people have put up crosses on the site thousands of them. Some rulers didn t like that and sent bulldozers out to destroy the crosses. But each time the crosses were from down, Lithuanians bravely brought more crosses back. They kept praying too. Today you can see the Hill of Crosses from miles away. Jesus tells us that a city on a mountain can t be hidden. Like the hill of crosses, Jesus love will never be destroyed. JOIN OUR ST. 5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith February, the Month of Love Psalms 51:10 (KJV) Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Romans 12:1(KJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. February is a special month with significance touching the secular, romantic, and spiritual realms. First, it is the shortest month of the year. This year s span is only 28 days. Also, Valentine s Day falls on the 14 th of this month. Most of us will forget this romantic day until it is upon us a week or two before the 4 th; remembering just in time to send candy, roses and cards filled with human expressions of love and devotion to our true loves. However, the deepest expression of love is more than candy, roses, and cards; it is remembering what Jesus did for us by presenting himself as a living sacrifice for our salvation. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16(KJV). Let us pray: Lord I love you, I am giving you my heart; I am submitting to you, I am yielding to you; here is my body as a living sacrifice. Make me more loving. Make me more forgiving. Make me kinder. Make me a better witness for you. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. The St. Anastasia Children's Choir is ongoing and open to all children of St. A s Church. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4 pm and the choir sings at the Sunday 9 am Masses, twice monthly. Our goal this year is $ 91,400. FACT OF LIFE The United Methodist Church s Surprising Announcement For 40 years the United Methodist Church has supported the Supreme Court s infamous Roe v. Wade decision - that is, until last week. Delegates of the country s third-largest body voted to repeal the official resolution supporting the case establishing a constitutional right to abortion during its General Conference. They also voted to sever its affiliation with the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), an interfaith organization co-founded by the United Methodist Church. The RCRC advocates for abortion without restrictions - the legal killing of any pre-born child for any reason at any point during pregnancy... UMC s 5 million predominately theologically conservative African members are largely responsible for this development. It is their efforts that help explain why the denomination has resisted liberalizing its teachings on marriage and has moved more conservative on abortion, writes Mark Tooley, a Methodist who serves as the president of the Institute on Religion and Democracy.
