2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time - St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that Christ died so that those who live might live no longer for themselves. What we give to and do for others, we give to and do for Jesus! 2 Corinthians 5:15 THE WIND AND THE SEA Living along the shores of Lake Superior the big lake, as the locals call it you can often hear the advice, Respect the lake; don t take it for granted. People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. This Week: Saturday, June 20th / Sunday, June 21st Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Whoever is in Christ is a new creation. Today s reading from Saint Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians reminds us that we have become new creations in Christ. As such, we are to continue to turn away from sin so that God may continue to transform our lives. Such a transformation is meant to set our hearts on fire for the Lord Jesus, and move us to give faithful witness to the Gospel. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, the Lord addresses Job. The second reading from Saint Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians tells us that whoever is in Christ is a new creation. In the Gospel, before He acts to calm a violent storm, Jesus chastises His disciples for their lack of faith. Recognize and make room for God as a part of everything. Seek His will as a parent. Turn to Him and the saints for guidance. 2. Love your wife. Kids are the fruit of marriage, and good kids come from good marriages. A good marriage provides a bedrock of love on which children can grow and depend. It also models for sons how to treat women and for daughters how to expect to be treated. 3. Make family a priority. It took me a long time to realize; but priorities must be God, family, then work. 4. Recognize your children as not yours. We co-create our children with God. He is the one in charge, and he allows us to participate. We are stewards entrusted with care in the raising of these children of God. We need to take that seriously. 5. Be counter-cultural. I would not worry about whether kids are ostracized by friends. If they are, they probably aren t really friends. I raise my kids to realize that we, as a family, are different- and they need to be okay with that. We need to teach our children to disengage from the culture of the screen and live in the real world. Don t watch shows and movies that are counter to our Catholic values. Not allowing the damaged parts of our culture to infect the home is probably the biggest challenge. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so it was already filling up. Jesus woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Quiet! Be still! The wind ceased and there was great calm. Mark 4: The apostles new that Jesus was special when the winds and the sea obeyed His commands. Who but God can control nature the way Jesus did? He can do even more than that. He can calm inner storms as well. Is there something brewing inside you right now that needs to be stilled?
