2 This Week: Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 / Sunday, March 4th, 2018 THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Jesus performed many signs, but it was in his death and resurrection that God s glory was fully revealed and made manifest. When Jesus drives the money changers and animal vendors from the Temple, the Jews demand a sign to prove his authority. They do not have the faith to see what is in front of them. Later, when Jesus dies and is risen, his disciples remember his words, and they understand and believe. Do we have the faith to see what is revealed right in front of us, in this Eucharist? LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, God presents the Ten Commandments to Moses. In the Letter to the Corinthians, Paul declares Christ as the power and wisdom of God for Jew and Gentile, alike. Today s Gospel displays Jesus zeal for his Father s house, as he drives the money changers and animal sellers out of the Temple. 3 LENTEN FOCUS: STATIONS OF THE CROSS WILL TAKE PLACE DURING LENT ON FRIDAY EVENINGS AT 6:00 PM On Wednesdays, Join Us For the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 6:00 PM. (No Wednesday evening Mass) The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent: ABSTINENCE Refrain from the consumption of meat. This penitential practice is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years. On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. Liquids are allowed. If a person is unable to observe these regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Giving up something for Lent fosters self-discipline and tempers our desires. It is a form of fasting. It is a form of penance. It promotes spiritual growth. If you're giving up something for Lent, that's great. Also consider doing something positive to bolster your spiritual life and make the world a better place. 1) Look for ways that you can increase your knowledge of your faith 2) Strengthen your spiritual life 3) Perform special acts of mercy and kindness at home, at work, in your parish or in your community. First Reading -- The wrath and the mercy of the LORD are revealed in the exile and liberation of the Chosen People (2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a. Psalm -- Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you! (Psalm 137) or Psalm 23. Second Reading -- God, who is rich in mercy, brought us to life with Christ (Ephesians 2:4-10) or Ephesians 5:8-14. Gospel -- The Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life (John 3:14-21) or John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38].

4 Saint Anastasia was born in 281 A.D. and became a perfect symbol of peace, humanity, and solidarity. Her Feast Day is December 25th. She is a symbol of dialogue and collaboration. BUNDLES FOR BABIES Cribs, strollers, maternity clothes, & diapers size 3,4 & 5 are needed for new mothers of several local pregnancy centers. Help these centers bring hope and material assistance to women pregnant in difficult circumstances. Bring your clean gently used items to the parking lot. Monetary donations, volunteers to drive to a center, and prayers are also greatly appreciated. Freedom to reject comparison And to embrace uniqueness. Freedom to cut ties with greed And feast on love. Freedom to abstain from over indulgence And feast on self-control. Freedom to leave behind selfish thoughts And to focus on the needs of others. Freedom to fend off insecurity And to embrace grace. Lord, at this time of Lent, Thank you for the freedom you bring. Transportation safety is key - The safety of your children is often entrusted to other drivers bus drivers, family members, friends parents, coaches and parents should be aware of who is in charge of transportation. Although you cannot control everything, you can teach your children how to ride in another person s vehicle. Teach kids to always wear seatbelts, and avoid distracting behavior that will take the driver s attention away from the road. Ask your school about their policies and the requirements for those who may be in charge of transportation. 5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith BLESS ME, FATHER, FOR I HAVE SINNED If you haven't gone to confession in a while, Lent is the perfect time to reconcile yourself with God and the Church. We host a communal penance service followed by the opportunity for individual confession. Our Communal Penance Service will take place on March 22 nd at 7:30 PM) Third Sunday of Lent JUSTICE In our day, we look around and see injustice, arrogance, and evil in the world, and even in our own country. But we are assured that God sees this as well, for in Psalm 103 we are told that "The LORD secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed" (103:6). Saint Paul warns, "Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall" (1 Corinthians 10:12). We don't have to do it alone. In our efforts for peace and justice, God is our helper and our guide. KINDNESS Jesus warns us today that God's justice will not be constrained forever. We are reminded that "if you do not repent, you will all perish" (Luke 13:3). We are given the grace of Lenten prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to bring us back to the right path. God is a loving and forgiving God. "[God] redeems your life from destruction,... crowns you with kindness and compassion.... Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger and abounding in kindness" (Psalm 103:4, 8). We can take comfort in these words, because even if we are the ones dishing out injustice and sorrow, God still shows us a way back to forgiveness. God gives us other people to help us on our way, people who show us kindness and compassion and help us to get on the right path. They are like the gardener who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit. These friends of God help us to realize our ways and nurture us back to the love of God. We are also invited to help others on their journey back to God in this season of Lent. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of the Gospel. KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH There's no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: "The law of the LORD is perfect, / refreshing the soul" (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. Copyright (c) J. S. Forty monks in Silver Sity, New Mexico, plus many young postulants and a hundred men on a waiting list to visit, follow St. Benedict s spirituality of work and prayer.
