The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. This Week: Saturday, August 8th / Sunday, August 9th Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: God sustains us in our daily lives, and His presence is everlasting. We may be tempted to believe that God is not always with us. Yet the opposite is true. In the first reading, Elijah discovered that the Lord was with him, and God strengthen him. Jesus assures us of His presence when He feeds us with the Bread of Life. As we grow in faith, we are invite to taste and see God s goodness in our lives. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the reading from Kings, Elijah is discouraged and goes into the desert. An angel of the Lord brings him food to sustain him on his journey to Mount Horeb. The second reading teaches that we are to be loving because Christ has loved us. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that He is the Bread of Life come down from heaven, the source of eternal life for all who believe. Pool safety is about more than swimming - Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Although you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don t forget about when they re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. 5 Ministry in Community High School Confirmation Registration Now Open... Through August 30 Get the online form at st-anastasia.org/ sacraments or request via at confirmation- ATTENTION LOYOLA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS! We re working on scheduling a daily school bus originating in the Westchester area. The more students we get, the cheaper the cost of the bus per student. There will be one central bus pick-up location and two buses available after school, one immediately following dismissal and the other at approximately 5:30 pm to accommodate after school activities. We need to sign a contract with the bus company prior to August 15 th in order to provide service effective September 1 st. Mission Co-op Collection to take place THIS weekend, August 8/9, here at St. Anastasia. The Mission Co-Op at all the Masses this weekend of August 8-9 will benefit the Lay Mission-Helpers Association. Founded in 1955, the Lay Mission- Helpers Association trains, sends and supports lay people (single, married couples, families) to serve in overseas Catholic mission dioceses for a minimum of 3 years. They serve in a professional capacity in areas such as health, education, engineering, etc., and witness their faith by how they live their lives. Chad Ribordy, who is representing LMH, served for 12 years with his wife and children in Brazil. Chad is now LMH s Associate Director. Thank you for you support and generosity. The 20th Annual St. A s Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, October 19, at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach with the traditional post-tournament dinner and awards to follow at The Elks Club in Playa del Rey. By now you have all seen, or at least heard about, the undercover videos taken of top Planned Parenthood executives casually discussing how they dismember babies through abortion and sift through the remains for body parts to sell for profit. We also have hints that upcoming videos show infants actually born alive and still used for valuable unharmed parts. While this is vile in itself, it points to what we know -- that Planned Parenthood is in the business of destroying innocent unborn human life, and harming women in the process, every single day, whether they sell the body parts or not. [Elijah] got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. I Kings 19:8 What is your favorite afternoon snack? An apple? Chips? Cookies and milk? Whatever you eat, make sure it s healthy so you can get through the long stretch between lunch and dinner. Elijah had a really long stretch between meals forty days!! But he received heavenly food from God that kept him going. Jesus gives us the most perfect food for our journey in Holy Communion. It s Jesus Himself: His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Jesus, I truly believe that you are the Bread of Life. When I receive your Body and Blood, I receive your strength so that I can live with you forever.
