2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... First Sunday of Advent ~ We are the servants of God, each with his or her own task. We will be judged good stewards if, at His coming, He finds us ready and conscientiously pursuing the tasks to which we have been called. Dear Parishioners, Happy Advent and welcome to a New Liturgical Year! This year we will be studying the Cycle B readings concentrating mostly with the Gospel of St. Mark. There are two key sentiments that I find striking in today s readings. From Isaiah the very first line is a great acknowledgement beautiful and powerful words really: You, Lord, are our Father From the Gospel: Watch! Not from the stand point of look, but from the stand point of Be ready! The signs are all around us. Look at things with eyes of faith. Believe in your heart that preparedness is the key to being a successful disciple. Trust in your soul that Jesus is the answer for all your fears, your worries, your hopes, your desires. Watch! This Week: Saturday, November 29th / Sunday, November 30th First Sunday of Advent Reflections on Today s Readings FOCUS: Return to me, Watch, Wait, Be Alert, Prepare! We watch the seasonal changes in nature and prepare for them. During Advent we look more deeply at our lives and prepare our hearts for Christ. What lies in darkness and waiting? What is calling up into the light? Are we willing to let the divine potter fashion what is best for our lives? May we prepare ourselves to be all that God created us to be. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah relates a pattern of sin, suffering, supplication and salvation the people wander away and God forgives them. He says, Yet, Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay and you the potter. Jesus cautions the disciples to keep alert, because they don t know the future. He illustrates His point with s story of a man making household preparations before a trip. Gospel I have baptized you with water; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:1-8). Living Faith For Kids Jesus said to His disciples: Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. ~ Mark 13:33 When Jesus makes a command like this one, we pay close attention. But be watchful and alert for what exactly? Certainly for the Second Coming of Christ at the end of time. The season of Advent reminds us that we are waiting for that important day. But Jesus wants us to be alert for His coming to us right now in many different ways: in the words of Scripture, in the poor and needy, in the Holy Spirit alive in our hearts and in the Body of Christ, the Church. 4 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Advent Wreath Lighting and Reflection: The Season of Advent is soon upon us. Advent is the season of waiting for Jesus coming. During this season we focus on being ready to receive Christ. We need people, individuals and families, to volunteer to participate in this liturgical activity. Your presence and participation in this activity would be a great blessing. The sign-up poster is in the Vestibule. Fact of Life The Orwellian Deception By Rebecca Taylor in The National Catholic Register Three-Parent Babies Okayed in the United Kingdom In an attempt to prevent mitochondrial disease, scientists have developed MR. In one MR technique, a donor egg with normal mitochondria has its nucleus removed. Then the nucleus of a woman with mutations in her mtdna is placed inside the donor egg, creating an egg with the genetic material from two different women. That egg is then fertilized in the laboratory. The resulting embryo has the genetic material of three people, two women and one man. Three parent embryos are genetically modified, carrying a combination that could not happen naturally. This germ-line modification will not only affect the resulting embryo: It will be passed down to every successive generation. The Catholic Church teaches that this type of germ-line genetic engineering is morally wrong not only because it creates human life in a dish, but also because of the risks involved Only a line drawn on principle can prevent this inevitable descent down the slippery slope. Namely, we must enact laws precluding the creation and manipulation of human life via techniques of biotechnology in the first place. Our focus should be on treating those with mitochondria disease, not on opening the Pandora s box of germ-line genetic engineering. Who should report child abuse? Priests, deacons, school faculty and administrators and other staff members in our parishes and schools have been designated as mandated reporters under California law. When one of these persons receives information leading to a reasonable suspicion that a child is being abused or neglected, he or she must make a report to the appropriate child protection or law enforcement agency. In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord. - Isaiah 40:3 Advent is s time for turning our ears to the wondrous sounds of God s coming. We hear the clarion tolling of bells, the stirring hymns of carolers, the soothing bubble of hot chocolate, the bracing crunch of winter snow, and the exhilarating tearing of wrapping paper. Faith develops a heightened sense of hearing with the approach of Christ s birth. Those who believe are blessed to catch mystical sounds that fall on deaf ears when listening is confined to the realms of the literal or scientific. Christians hear the voices of angels carried on the wind, messengers of good news in word and song. Most of all, they hear the cries of the poor during this season, enlisting our hearts in the happy duty of compassion. The voices of the consumer culture conspire to distract us from the songs of prophets and angels with gleeful proclamations of material wonders. Those blessed to discover that the night wind can indeed speak to a little lamb or a Lamb of God embrace the opportunity to be witnesses of sound as well as sight. We spend these holy days gladly proclaiming to the spiritually deaf, Do You Hear What I Hear? Also performing that day will be St. A s Children s Choir and our Jr. High Glee Class. It will be a tremendous mix of wonderful music from our young people. We hope you will be able to join us.
