2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Fourth Sunday of Easter See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. 1 John 3:1-2 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: As the Good Shepherd, Jesus is the One who guides and protects us. With the Lord Jesus at our side, we have nothing to fear. He is constantly present to watch over us, and ready to assist when we need Him. It is the Lord who leads us as the Good Shepherd, and He will never abandon us. We follow Him lovingly as His beloved sheep. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In today s first reading, Peter makes a dramatic pronouncement about the Lord Jesus being the cornerstone of our salvation. In the second reading, we are reminded that we are blessed by being able to claim to be the children of God. In our Gospel, Jesus assures us that, as a shepherd guards his flock, He protects us. Dear Parishioners, This is First Communion Weekend! On Saturday, April 28th we will have 65 children receiving the First Eucharist, and on Sunday there are 14 young people who will be confirmed and also receive First Eucharist. Most of us have very fond memories of our First Communion. It is such a powerful moment of God s grace. The occasion serves also to remind us of the precious and beautiful gift that the Lord Jesus provides every time we come to Mass Himself His Body and Blood. It is His Body and Blood that unite us in the Risen Christ and with one another. Christ is Risen! Alleluia! 3 VIRTUS TRAINING: Ministry sends us beyond the parish Sunday, May 6 th at St. Anastasia, Virtus Protecting God s Children Awareness Session, from 2:00PM-4:30PM in the school basement. Anyone who volunteers, in any capacity, on and off the school campus with students MUST attend this session. If you have already attended a session, you will not need to attend. I am the Light of the World John 8:12 VIRTUS RECERTIFICATION Virtus Recertification Keeping the Promise Alive will be offered to our high school and 6 th thru 8 th grade parents on Sunday, May 6th, from 5PM-6PM in the school basement. High schools are requiring parents to show they have had Virtus or Virtus recertification within the last 4 years before they can volunteer. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, please call the Rectory Office at Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity Annual Collection May 5-6, 2012 Since 1951, the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity has offered hope for those in crisis situations throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. On May 5th and 6th, 2012, all parishes will take up this Annual Collection. Your contribution goes directly toward emergency needs for children, adults, and families and provides one-time emergency help for food, utilities, medical, housing or funeral expenses. The goal of the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity is the service to the neediest of the needy, those for whom no other resources exist. Please be as generous as possible. Use reusable containers; if you must buy disposable, buy paper or glass products instead of plastic. Bring reusable cloth bags when shopping instead of disposable plastic bags. Visit: catholicclimatecovenant.org. There are few openings for "Shepherds" in the classified ads today, but few occupations are as dear to the Christian heart. Most of us tenderly place shepherds by our Christmas cribs, name the Twenty-third Psalm as our favorite, and recognize "Good Shepherd" as a title of Jesus. Bishops carry a staff, called a Crozier, modeled after the shepherd's walking staff. Long before Christian artists painted Jesus on the cross, they traced on the walls of their worship places images of a strong young shepherd, shouldering a lost sheep and bringing it to safety. Springtime is the season of lambing, a time when the shepherd not only learns the faces of the new arrivals, but also when the newborn sheep become attuned to the voice of the shepherd. This is exactly what we do as a community in Easter as we shelter and guide the newly received Christians, and also put our Lenten muscles to good use: listening more attentively to God's Word, and responding with springtime vigor to God's call. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. 4 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Living Faith for Kids A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away John 10:12 There is a saying that goes like this: No one washes a rented car. The idea is that because you are renting a car for just a little while, you don t really care what it looks like. It doesn t belong to you, so you are less likely to take good care of it. Jesus is telling us that we belong to God, and He does take good care of us. We are His precious belongings, and no matter what else happens, He will continue to care for us. God, help me to remember that I belong to you. Acts 4:8-12 Psalm 118:1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, John 3:1-2 John 10:11-18 ALTAR SERVERS FOR THE YEAR All students of St. Anastasia Parish who will be in the 5th grade next school year, , and all those who will be in the 6th through the 8th grades, who are not currently altar servers, are invited to join the Altar Server Program. Applications will be available in the rectory office from Monday May 7th, through Friday, May 25th, Weekly training sessions, Monday through Saturday, comprised of five trainees for each session, will begin Monday June 18th and continue through August 4th. 5 Keep Kids Safe Campaign Ministry in Community April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month and Keep Kids Safe month in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. It is most appropriate that these events take place during the Easter Season, since there is no better time to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God our children. During this week, children in Catholic schools and Religious Education programs in the Archdiocese will wear bright blue ribbon-shaped stickers that say, Keep Kids Safe. The stickers are part of a campaign to highlight the Archdiocese s extensive abuse prevention and education programs for children and adults. For more information about the campaign call your parish or school office or contact the Office of Safeguard the Children, (213) or bmelendez@la-archdiocese.org For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) Fact of Life: Vermont Again Defeats Assisted Suicide The Vermont legislature has defeated, for a second time this legislative session, an attempt to legalize assisted suicide in what could have made the state the third in the nation other than Oregon and Washington to allow the practice. After nearly three hours of debate on the latest effort on both the process and substance of legalizing assisted suicide in the Green Mountain State, the amendment was defeated on an vote.... The Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings on doctor-prescribed suicide legislation in March, but the Committee was not persuaded to support the bill and declined to move it forward., officials of Vermont Right to Life said.... Wesley J. Smith, a bioethics attorney, commented on the consequences of the defeat of the measure.... Assisted suicide doesn t just kill bodies, it destroys all hope. And in a world in which assisted suicide was legal and relatively routine, at least some would die, never knowing they would have lived as the assisted suicide pushers patted themselves on the back for their supposed compassion.
