2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time - The hand of the Lord feeds us, says the psalmist; he answers all our needs. Both Elisha s servant in the first reading and the disciples in the Gospel story who witnessed the feeding of the five thousand saw this happen and knew it to be true. Dear Parishioners, St. Mark s Gospel today is a shinning example of the compassion of Jesus. He feeds over five thousand people who had nothing to eat, multiplying just a few barley loaves and some fish. As disciples, the lesson is clear to us. Jesus can take the little that we have in terms of our gifts and talents and do miraculous and wonderful things. When we place our talents and gifts, even our lives, Jesus multiplies these, so that we are able to reach out to others and provide what they are truly hungering after, what they are really looking for. Thank you for offering your gifts, talents, time, treasure; your lives to Jesus, and to this beautiful community that belongs to Him. Devotedly yours, Fr. This Week: Saturday, July 25th / Sunday, July 26th Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Through the Eucharist, Jesus nourishes and strengthens us to lead holy lives that are pleasing to God. One of the primary reasons Jesus instituted the Eucharist is to provide our souls the sustenance needed to grow in holiness and come to share eternal life in heaven. Every time we receive the Eucharist, we really and truly receive Jesus. In doing so, we draw closer to Him and receive the strength to live as His faithful followers so we may be judged worthy of eternal life. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading from Kings, we hear of a meal provided by the Lord which exceeds the needs of the crowd, foreshadowing John s Gospel account of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. In Ephesians, we are called to be united in one Lord, one Faith and one Baptism. We are reminded to live our lives in a manner worthy of our calling. 4 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith ATTENTION LOYOLA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS! We re working on scheduling a daily school bus originating in the Westchester area. The more students we get, the cheaper the cost of the bus per student. There will be one central bus pick-up location and two buses available after school, one immediately following dismissal and the other at approximately 5:30 pm to accommodate after school activities. We need to sign a contract with the bus company prior to August 15 th in order to provide service effective September 1 st. For example, if a child comes to you and tells you that a friend is being left out of social activities, you might respond with a question: Do you think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more included? Or if your child comes to you for money for social activities, instead of offering a solution, you might prompt them to consider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a child find a solution to an immediate situation, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence. There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. John 6:9 In a few passages of the Bible, children play important roles. Today we see a young boy giving Jesus five loaves of bread and two fish, which Jesus turns into enough food to feed 5,000 people. I wonder what would have happened if this boy had not shown up with his bread and fish. He might never have met Jesus or seen His amazing miracles. Jesus might call us for an important task some day. It may not be as great a thing as the miracles of the loaves and fish. But whatever it is, we need to be ready. We need to have an open heart to the voice of Jesus asking us to do good in the world, to help others. Be open to the call from Jesus.
