2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... JULY 31st, 2016, 18th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Jesus urges us to be rich in what matters to God. The psalmist warns us against hardening our hearts. Are our hearts open to what really matters? HITTING IT BIG It seems to be commonly accepted nowadays that everyone wants to win the lottery, hit the slots big at the casino, or be a millionaire. This attitude is akin to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have thought: Why, of course he d want to find a way to preserve his good fortune for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It s exactly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this common wisdom makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that much harder to hear today. Perhaps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. We will not achieve the future security we pursue, and we will lose the present moment in the chase. Copyright J. S. This Week: Saturday, July 30th / Sunday, July 31st Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Let us seek to store up treasure not in worldly goods, but in what matters most to God. The time we have on this earth is precious and short. It can be all too easy to fall into the trap of wasting precious time pursuing happiness in the things of the world, which will not endure. Let us seek to grow rich in the things that matter most in God s eyes and bring us to share in eternal life. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading from Ecclesiastes reminds us that everything good comes from God. The second reading from Colossians exhorts us to put to death the parts of you that are earthly, and focus on what is of God. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that we are to take care to guard against greed, for our life does not consist of possessions. 4 Ministry in Community R.C.I.A. RCIA - AN AMAZING JOURNEY OF FAITH FOR YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW Are you thinking about becoming a Catholic? Do you know someone who might be thinking about becoming a Catholic? The process through which adults are fully initiated into the Catholic faith community is called RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. We become a member of the Catholic faith by truly experiencing the life, the self understanding, and the activities of the community itself. Call or her at jonettemauch@gmail.com for information. Keep your kids safe in parks this summer - The weather outside is beautiful, and one of the best places to play is the park. However, parents should start every visit to the park with a discussion with their kids about a safety plan. Kids should know what to do if a stranger were to approach them, and who to go to if they feel uncomfortable or threatened. Public parks are a great place to play, but they are exposed to the public. Having a safety plan in place can help parents and kids feel secure and play safely this summer. Godfrey Tuhairwe, a Diocesan Priest from the Diocese of Hoima in Uganda will be here that weekend preaching and sharing with us, his Missionary work in that community and their many needs; spiritual and materials. Fr. Godfrey was ordained in July 12, He first worked at the Cathedral Parish for two years. From 2010 to present, he has been serving as a Parish Priest at Uganda Martyrs Catholic Parish Buseesa, Uganda, Africa. WORRY Don t tell me that worry doesn t do any good. I know better. FACT OF LIFE Intellectually Disabled Patients To Be Eligible For Assisted Suicide The End of Life Option Act may soon include regulations to allow patients with significant intellectual disabilities to kill themselves even though the bill states that patients must be mentally competent. (Angelus Magazine) Opponents of the Assisted Suicide Bill knew that the most vulnerable among us would be a target of those who try to package suicide as compassion, instead of the killing of a human life. As Catholics it is vital that we understand our faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC ) states: Intentional Euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living. God, his Creator. Suicide is seriously contrary to justice, hope, and charity.
