2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... December 10, 2017 Second Sunday of Advent Christians must beg God for the grace of conversion: the grace to know who they are, to whom they belong, how they are to live the grace to repent and change and grow, the grace to become good disciples and stewards. NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, "Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God" (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation. 3 This Week: Saturday, December 9th, 2017 / Sunday, December 10th, 2017 Second Sunday of Advent FOCUS: As John the Baptist prepared the way of the Lord, so must we prepare for his coming by being Jesus disciples his witnesses in the world Our reading today gives us hope that Jesus is coming, but also offers a challenge to prepare the way before him. John the Baptist s words in today s Gospel point us to Jesus while challenging us to repent. In order to prepare the way and make straight his paths, we must be willing sometimes, to go out on a limb and be that voice crying in the wilderness, proclaiming the mightiness of our Savior. Reflections on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD In the first reading from Isaiah, we hear a voice that cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord. In the second reading we are reminded that we will not know the day or the hour of Jesus return, so we must be ready. Today s Gospel talks of John the Baptist proclaiming a baptism of repentance. TODAY'S READINGS We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages that will be proclaimed at all the Masses Next Week First Reading -- As a garden makes its growth spring up, so will GOD make justice spring up before all the nations (Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11). Psalm -- My soul rejoices in my God (Luke 1:46-50, 53-54). Second Reading -- Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:16-24). Gospel -- I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord (John 1:6-8, 19-28). Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths. -- Mark 1:3 PLEASE NOTE: The Church is OPEN Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6 AM 6 PM (closing time). On Wednesdays, Divine Mercy is from 6-7 pm. There is Confession from 6:15-6:45 pm. (During Devotion). Church will be closed at 7 pm. (ONLY ON THIS DAY!) The Church will be CLOSED on Saturdays after the 5:30 Mass. The Church will be CLOSED on Sundays after the 7:30 PM evening Mass. JOIN US! 4 MINISTRY IN COMMUNITY ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING AND REFLECTION: The Season of Advent is upon us. Advent is the season of waiting for Jesus coming. During this season we focus on being ready to receive Christ. We need people, individuals and families to volunteer to participate in this liturgical activity. Your presence and participation in this activity would be a great blessing. The signup poster is in the Vestibule this weekend. For more information, call A Mass to honor OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE will be offered on Tue., Dec. 12th at 6:30 pm (Rosary at 6:30, followed by Mass), here at St. Anastasia. Fr. Leszek will officiate. A reception will follow in Diamond Courtyard. All are welcome! KIDS LIVING FAITH: Sunday, December 10, 2017 Second Sunday of Advent Who doesn t like little lambs? Unfortunately, hungry wolves like lambs too. When wolves are around, lambs need a shepherd to keep them safe. A good shepherd also leads lambs to pastures where they can find food and water. We need a shepherd too. The Lord is our Good Shepherd who leads us to the real food of the Eucharist. He guides us away from evil and forgives us when we sin. He loves us always. Lord, You are my shepherd. May I always be grateful for your loving care. MARGARET S CENTER CHRISTMAS PROGRAM St. Margaret s Christmas Program: It s time for the annual St. Margaret s Center Christmas Program and your generous support is needed. Staff and volunteers are preparing a magical day for approximately 1,000 low-income children and their parents from surrounding communities. Besides new toys and cash donations, there is a need for adult volunteers, especially for the prep work in the three days preceding the event on December 16 th ---sorting toys, preparing goody bags, decorating, etc., at Lennox Middle School. Annual Donation Statement Information In January the parish office will be sending donation statements to those who donated $100 or more during IRS rules require a written acknowledgement only for individual gifts of $250 or more, but the statements are a reminder to claim the deduction for those who itemize. Donations will be included in your annual donation statement only if they are delivered via the collection basket or to the parish office by December 31, or if postmarked on or before December 31. Donations will otherwise be credited to 2018 contributions. If you have a record of contributions not shown in your statement, please contact the parish office. Traveling With Kids Remind children about your family safety procedures for dealing with strangers and what to do if they get lost. Keep recent photos of children handy, also a copy of passports kept in a safe place, or with a relative who can get it to you in case of loss. If you label children s clothing, make sure the label is inside, so strangers are not able to learn child s name. This year it will be on the 3rd Sunday of Advent. This beautiful and meaningful event is all possible thanks to those who volunteer their time and talents! This is a beautiful opportunity to experience what Mary and Joseph may have felt as doors were closed in their faces, and then to experience the true joy of hospitality. AWAKEN YOUR HEARTS TO PREPARE THE WAY FACT OF LIFE Let us take a brief historical look at abortion It may surprise you to learn that archeologists have discovered curettes for performing abortion that are over 2,000 years old. We are all familiar with the famous medical oath, the Hippocratic Oath, which condemns both abortion and euthanasia. We should take a moment to reflect that this oath originated in the 5th century BC. Clearly, abortion existed and was a problem in the Ancient World. It was not legalized in any nation, however, until the 20th century. Which country was the first to legalize abortion? Soviet Russia in Lenin placed a priority on free abortion as a way to create the new Socialist Man and Woman and to help destroy the Bourgeois Family. Which was the second country to legalize abortion? Nazi, Germany in 1935 specifically for reasons of racial hygiene and eugenics. So isn t it interesting that the roots of legal abortion in the modern world are the two most despicable totalitarian ideologies to emerge in the 20th century?
