2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 4th Sunday of Easter: To be good stewards we must be good shepherds, willing to lay down our lives for those committed to our care, not mere hired hands who run off, leaving the sheep to be snatched and scattered by the wolf. John 10:12 Dear Parishioners, The Fourth Sunday of Easter is always known as GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY since the Gospel reading always focuses on Jesus as the Good Shepherd who always cares for his sheep. It is the perfect day for us to especially lift up in prayer our Holy Father, Pope Francis, Archbishop Gómez, and all the bishops of our Church, and for all who in some way exercise the role of shepherding. It is also a day to pray that more young men will respond to God's call to become priests, especially from our own parish here at St. A's! Please pray especially that God will bless me, and the other priests of our parish, so that young men will see in us something very attractive, something holy and beautiful, because sacrifice is worth spending one's entire life -- for the sake of Jesus and the Gospel. Pray that there will be among us all a great desire and willingness to be of generous service to God's People. Thank you to all those who helped make the celebration for Father Tom and Monsignor Vadakin such a beautiful event for our Parish! It was a perfect day! On Saturday, May 10, we received into Full Communion, Wasani Probasco, Amber Barros, Jennifer Howard, Ariana Ordonez, and Sharon Record, and at the Easter Vigil Andrew Kurtz was baptized and received into the Church. Next Saturday, we will have First Communion for our young students and on Sunday for our Older Sacramental students. This season asks us to appreciate the presence of Christ in the Sacraments of Initiation, to suffer for the sake of the One who suffered for us, and to heed the voice of the One who calls us to greener pastures. Reflection on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: Peter addressed the crowds gathered for the Pentecost celebration in Jerusalem, proclaiming that the One who was crucified was the One whom God had sent. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that He is the gate through whom we should pass to have abundant life and the only voice that we should heed. Living Faith for Kids Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side. Psalm 23:4 Many people would say this psalm is their favorite Bible passage. No wonder! We all have to face scary things in the dark valleys of our lives. To feel sure that Jesus is right there with us would be wonderful indeed. Guess what? Jesus is right there with us whether we feel His presence or not. This great psalm is a reminder of what is true, whether we are in the dark valley or the bright sunshine. 4 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Novena of Masses - The Novena of Masses for all Mothers who are enrolled begins TODAY, Sunday, May 11 th. These cards are available for those whose mothers are alive and for those whose mothers have passed away. We have place them by the side doors and in the Vestibule. Please complete an envelope with your mother s name (living or deceased) and place it in the collection basket or drop it off at the Parish Office. Fact of Life: Pope Francis: Abortion Compounds the Grief of Many Women "Abortion compounds the grief of many women who now carry with them deep physical and spiritual wounds after succumbing to the pressures of a secular culture which devalues God's gift of sexuality and the right to life of the unborn. The sacrament of reconciliation, in particular, must be rediscovered as a fundamental dimension of the life of grace." The mainstream media misrepresented the Pope's abortion views in a wide-ranging interview, suggesting he is saying the Catholic Church should downplay it's pro-life teachings. What Pope Francis did say is that the Catholic Church should simultaneously speak out against abortion while providing hope and healing for women who have had an abortion, and have seen their lives destroyed by it. The LAX Hunger Walk will take place on Saturday, May 17 th, at 7:30 am. It will begin and end at St. Joseph Church in Hawthorne. Proceeds from the 10-kilometer walk (2-kilometer route available too) benefit international hunger relief efforts as well as local programs, including St. Margaret's Center Food Pantry. During the month of May St. Anastasia Parish is collecting donations for the life-saving work of Los Angeles Pregnancy Services (LAPS). LAPS, a pro-life counseling center, provides women pregnant in difficult circumstances with spiritual, emotional, and material support before and after their babies are born. It's easy to help. Please take a baby bottle home, place your donation inside and return it to St. Anastasia Church or School by May 25. Direct questions to Teressa Syta at Bundles for Babies on Sunday, May 25 from 10 AM - 1 PM Cribs, strollers, maternity clothes, & diapers sizes 3,4 & 5 are needed for new mothers of several local pregnancy centers. Help these centers bring hope and material assistance to women pregnant in difficult circumstances. Bring your clean gently used items to the parking lot. Tom s 50th Anniversary as fishers of men! Sunday, May 4th, hundreds gathered at St. A s to celebrate this special occasion. After a moving and song-filled Mass we attended a lovely reception and program, and none of this would have been possible without our volunteers. How blessed are we! Thanks to all those who worked so diligently to make this event an amazing memory for our priests, parishioners, friends and family! Susan Kramer FOLLOWING THE GOOD SHEPHERD The joyful tone of the past three Sundays of Easter is a little darker today. All three readings remind us of suffering, death, and sin. We, like Peter s audience in the first reading, can ask, What are we to do? And the answer will be the same: we must reform. Or, as Peter says in his first Letter, we have strayed like sheep and must return to the shepherd. Jesus describes himself as a shepherd in today s Gospel, and we know it was one of the earliest images of Christ in the apostolic church. Today s passage continues the darker theme of the first two readings. Danger lurks and the sheep need protection. They might follow a false leader; they might be stolen or destroyed. Only in Jesus Christ will we be safe. Only in Him will we have eternal life. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. In children, the following signs may signal the presence of child abuse or neglect: Shows sudden changes in behavior or school performance. Is overly compliant, passive, or withdrawn. Comes to school or other activities early, stays late, and does not want to go home.
