He says the same to each of us, If you love Me, use the gifts I have given you to serve your brothers and sisters. John 21:15f Dear Parishioners, Thank you to all who made our Easter celebrations so beautiful. I was happy to see so many of you on Easter Sunday and on Divine Mercy Sunday. And of course, thank you for your Easter contributions! Your Sunday envelope contributions will help our ministries grow. In a special way, we want to acknowledge and express our congratulations and affection for Sally, Kris, and Lamar who have been welcomed into our Church. We wish them blessings in their gift of faith, and the great richness that comes only in the peace of Jesus Christ. In the longer version of the Gospel today, the Risen Jesus asks Simon Peter, "Do you love me?" This question is at the very heart of who we are as followers of Jesus. It is not enough just to listen to His word, or to be kind or charitable. While these are good things to do as Christians, the absolute center of being Christian is to love Jesus, and to love Him with all your heart. If we love Jesus, following His teaching will come more naturally -- perhaps not entirely easily -- but more a part of our character and nature. "Jesus, we love you! You know all things. 3 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Reflection on Today s Readings: Focus: We must not let resistance or opposition from others deter us from being faithful to God. The twelve Apostles faced opposition and resistance as they preached the Gospel. Even after being ordered by Jewish authorities to stop, they continue teaching and preaching because they knew it was more important to obey God. Similarly, we will encounter opposition as we strive to follow Jesus but we must not let it deter us. Liturgy of the Word: The first reading recounts how the Apostles rejoiced in being found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of their faith in Jesus. Revelation tells of all creatures in heaven and on earth joining together to praise and bless God. The Gospel recalls how Jesus revealed Himself to His disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. 4 Ministry in Community WE BELIEVE Where does prayer come from? Whether prayer is expressed in words or gestures, it is the whole [person] who prays. But in naming the source of prayer, Scripture speaks sometimes of the soul or the spirit, but most often of the heart (more than a thousand times). According to Scripture, it is the hear that prays. If our heart is far from God, the words of prayer are in vain. (CCC 2562). How can my heart grow closer to God through prayer today? St. Augustine prayed, You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Faith is God s gift to us, God s invitation to relationship, so that we may be filled with the life and love of the divine. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing. - Revelation 5:12 Support Archdiocese s 2013 Child Abuse Prevention Month Campaign: April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month and Keep Kids Safe month in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. It is most appropriate that these events take place during the Easter Season, since there is no better time to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God our children. During this month, numerous activities will take place to celebrate what we have accomplished in protecting our children and young people and in remembering and praying for victims/survivors of sexual abuse. Children in Catholic schools and Religious Education programs in the Archdiocese will wear bright blue ribbon-shaped stickers that say, Keep Kids Safe. To view the 2013 Child Abuse Prevention package and order resources go to Keep Kids Safe stickers and other resources at: Pages/CAPM.aspx. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) On Sunday, May 5, Saint Anastasia Parish will be distributing baby bottles at all the Masses to assist the life-saving work of Los Angeles Pregnancy Services (LAPS). LAPS, a pro-life counseling center, provides moms with spiritual, emotional, and material support before and after their babies are born. LAPS also provides information on adoption for women who want to carry their child, but aren't ready to parent. It's easy to help. Please take a baby bottle home, fill it with coins or bills and return it to St. Anastasia by the end of May. Direct questions to Teressa Syta at Twice a year St Anastasia holds its Bundles for Babies Drive, which is part of our Parish s ongoing Respect Life program. As you know, the Bundles project collects usable baby items to support the work of local pro-life counseling centers as they provide positive alternatives to women who are pregnant in difficult circumstances. Bundles for Babies has been organized by Teressa Syta for over 10 years and she is now ready to pass the project on to other hands. Please search your heart and let me know if that might be you. Emil Kapaun, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on April 11. The Medal of Honor is the highest military honor, awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. During one of the early battles of the Korean War, U.S. Army Chaplain Father Emil Kapaun walked through withering enemy fire to provide comfort and medical aid to his comrades. When they found themselves surrounded by the enemy, the able-bodied men were ordered to retreat. However, Chaplain Kapaun, aware of his certain capture, elected to stay behind with the wounded. Confined in the notorious Prison Camp #5, Father Kapaun heroically supported his men by stealing food to feed them, caring for the sick and injured, and inspiring them with his faith and generosity. The priest from Pilsen, Kansas showed his fellow prisoners that it was worth the effort to fight the cold, the starvation, the brainwashing, the disease, and the punishment to stay alive and make it home to their families and their country. He was not only a man of hope, but a man that was able to instill hope in others. Both hated and feared by his captors, Fr. Kapaun was denied treatment for his own infirmities. He died in captivity and is buried in an unmarked grave. But there are men alive today who attribute their own spiritual and physical survival to the complete self-giving of Fr. Emil Kapaun. The case for Fr. Kapaun's beatification and canonization has also been submitted to Rome. Father Emil Kapaun is the namesake of Westchester / Playa del Rey Knights of Columbus Council 3744.

5 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith FACT OF LIFE - Reflection on 40 Days for Life "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. On this rock I will build my Church; the gates of hell will not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18 When we read this verse, we usually think that the Lord is promising that the Church, which is His Body, will withstand all the attacks launched against it. Of course, that is true. But when we think about it more carefully, we realize that in a battle, the gates do not run out into the battlefield to attack the enemy. Rather, they stand still to defend the city from the enemy attacking it. So when the Lord says that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church, who is doing the attacking? It is the Church storming the gates! The Church, all of God's people in Christ, is called to take the offensive, to run into enemy territory, and to gain ground for Jesus Christ. We do not wait for an invitation; we already have a command. We prepare, but we do not wait for circumstances to be perfect; we already have one who has gone before us. During these 40 days, we have stormed the gates. We have taken the offensive. We have pushed forward the boundaries of the kingdom. And we must keep doing so, in numerous ways. Indeed, the gates of hell will not prevail. The gates of falsehood will flee in the presence of truth. The gates of sin will melt in the presence of grace. The gates of death will fall in the presence of the Church, the People of Life! Fr. Frank Pavone, Priests for Life. FROM POPE FRANCIS: Easter Message In his Easter Sunday Urbi Et Orbi message, Pope Francis echoed Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI s words (in Benedict s inaugural homily) saying, How many deserts, even today, do human beings need to cross! Above all, the desert within, when we have no love for God or neighbor, when we fail to realize that we are guardians of all that the Creator has given us and continues to give us. God s mercy can make even the driest land become a garden, can restore life to dry bones. He continued: Let us accept the grace of Christ's Resurrection! Let us be renewed by God's mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish. Acts 5:27-29 Just talking about Jesus was forbidden by the Jewish leaders of Jerusalem! But Jesus had told the Apostles to spread the Good News, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, that s just what they did. We, too, must obey God above any other authority. Let us remember to pray for Christians who suffer because they are obeying God rather than the laws of the land.
