Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord: Today we remember the three wise men from the East who came to pay homage to the infant Jesus, bringing Him rich gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The gifts we bring our time, service, and some share of what we earn for the work we do are equally precious in His sight. THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM The unfolding of the story of the Incarnation continues today as the Church celebrates the Epiphany. The tale of the magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Savior would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that the star of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can experience God's presence, manifested in ever new ways. FOCUS: God lavishes upon us gifts beyond our merit. Today s readings demonstrate the gratuitous nature of God s love for humanity. Recognizing this benevolence, we, along with the Magi, prostrate ourselves and pay homage by offering our supreme gifts our faith, hope and love in the service of our generous, loving God. Reflections on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, the prophet reminds Israel that God s glory will shine on them. They will be a people to be admired by nations and kings. Saint Paul recounts for the Ephesians that Gentiles are co-heirs and co-partners in the promise of Jesus Christ in the Gospel. The Gospel recounts the Magi s visit to pay homage to the newborn baby Jesus. In late January the parish office will be sending out donation statements to parishioners or families who have donated $100 or more during This level of reporting exceeds IRS rules which require a written acknowledgement only for individual gifts of $250 or more, but we send the statements as a reminder to claim the deduction for those who itemize. Donations will be included in your annual donation statement if they meet one of the following criteria: (1) checks/cash are placed in the collection basket at one of the December or prior Masses, or (2) checks/cash not placed in a collection basket must be delivered or postmarked no later than December 31st, or (3) online contributions are processed no later than December 31st. Please be aware that a check placed in a collection basket at a Mass in January or received/postmarked after December 31st will be included in the tax statement for the following year, even if the check is dated December 31st or prior. And today we celebrate how Jesus was revealed to the wise men. In some parts of the world, people exchange gifts today, remembering that the magi brought gifts to the Lord. The magi were overjoyed at finding the Lord at last! What fills you with joy? How do you know the Lord is with you? What gifts will you offer Jesus today? TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: This year, in the United States the celebration of the Epiphany falls on January 8, but the traditional date for the Epiphany is January 6. The date we know as January 6 was established as the solstice in Egypt in 1996 BC, but the Egyptian calendar lost a full day every 128 years. Twenty centuries later the actual solstice had migrated to December 25. People still kept January 6 for the solstice celebration, but December 25, matching nicely with the Roman pagan feast of the Unconquered Sun, launched an extended solstice holiday. By the time of the early church, the whole period of twelve days was celebrated just about everywhere. Christians began to celebrate Christ as the true light of the world in four themes: the Nativity, the manifestation to the Gentiles, the baptism of the Lord, and the wedding feast at Cana. That was entirely too much for one day to handle. A twelve-day season was ready to be adapted, so Christians borrowed from the pagan calendar for their own season of light. Thus early Christian celebrations of the Christmas season extended from one date for the solstice, December 25, to the older date, January 6. Start the new year with your kids safety in mind - During the start of a new year, many resolve to do things differently: pray more, live better and cherish God s gifts. It s also a great time to recommit to putting the safety and well-being of children first. Look to Mary, the Mother of God, for examples. They never saw me as a mistake, Francis Menard said. They made a decision that was right for me at the time A lot of people would have (chosen) abortion, but they put me first, to put me with a family to get the best I could possibly get. Melanie Cantrell was a high school student when she became pregnant, and while she and the biological father never married, they did remain friends. She contacted him and he was able to meet his son. Menard s father recounts, He was nervous, I was nervous, but he came in and fit right in (Menard is) probably the best thing that has happened to me in the last 20 years. You always wonder if you did the right thing, us being so young at the time. It was so hard. Francis Menard told the media, It was one of the hardest things they could ever have done, but it was best for me, I think what they did was incredible.
