Mark 16:16 Dear Parishioners, Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Our human efforts cannot surpass the power of prayer. Our Baptism calls us to bear witness to the truth of Christ s death and Resurrection; to love others as God has loved us; and to live a life worthy of a disciple of Christ. One thing necessary to do these things is to pray regularly to God, through Jesus, for the help and guidance we need. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The Apostles and others pray to the Lord before they elect Mattias as the successor to Judas. In the Gospel, Jesus prays to His Father, asking Him to protect the Apostles from the evils of the world and to consecrate them in the truth. In the second reading, the early Christians are reminded to love one another in imitation of the love of God. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. Where Jesus has gone, we have to follow. We will have Mass on the grass today at 2PM with lots of fun to follow. Next week is Pentecost Sunday. Maybe you might think about wearing red to highlight the gift of the feast the Birthday of the Church. Thank you all for the hope and faith you have shown throughout this season of Easter joy. TACSC Summer Leadership Conference Scholarship Opportunity For the first time, The Msgr. Vadakin Arts and Education Fund will award 20 partial scholarships (worth $270 each) to send 6th and 7th graders from St. Anastasia Parish to TACSC Summer Leadership Conference. Herb was chosen as Veteran of the Year by Assemblywoman Betsy Butler. Herb and his wife, Jan, will ride with Assemblywoman Butler in the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 19th. SUMMER AT LMU The Center for Religion and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University will be offering opportunities for Theological discussion and reflection this summer. God s Big Backyard: Get ready for an outdoor adventure that starts in our own backyard and grows as we take the love of Jesus into our own neighborhood and community! 4 DID YOU KNOW? Bullying Is a Form of Abuse Ministry in Community Did you know that bullying is a form of abuse, and therefore is forbidden in our Catholic schools? Bullying typically consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause victims to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion. Cyberbullying, which involves the use of the Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not tolerated in our Catholic schools. If you suspect bullying of a child at school, please contact the school principal with your concerns. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) Fact of Life: Coercion in the Name of Freedom SUMMER SCHOOL St. Anastasia Catholic School is offering summer school classes for students entering grades 1 to 4 in August The main emphasis will be on language arts and math. Classes start at 8:30 AM and conclude at 11:30 AM, Monday through Friday, from June 25 and end on July 20. The cost is $275 per child. Please call for more information. Each year, St. Anastasia Parish and School assists the life-saving work of Los Angeles Pregnancy Services (LAPS). LAPS, a pro-life counseling center, provides moms with spiritual, emotional, and material support before and after their babies are born. LAPS also provides information on adoption for women who want to carry their child, but aren't ready to parent. It's easy to help.
