2 St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California 26th Sunday in ordinary time September 25th, 2011 O Lord, you had just case to judge men as you did: because we sinned against you and disobeyed your will. But now show us your greatness of heart, and treat us with your unbounded kindness. Daniel 3:31, 29, 30, 43, 42 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: We have the choice: to acknowledge and imitate the ways of Christ or not - God sent His son Jesus to save and redeem us, and calls us to be humble and obedient. While God desires all to be saved, He forces nothing upon us and honors our choices. Still, we have free will, so it is up to us to choose to be obedient or not. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Ezekiel explains that God will judge souls by their personal choices, conduct and repentance. In the second reading, believers are called to imitate the humility, obedience and service of Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of two sons. One followed their father s command, and the other said he would, but did not. FACT OF LIFE HHS Violates Conscience Rights In implementing the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Health Resources and Services Administration [ HRSA ] of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [ HHS ] recently issued guidelines requiring almost all private health plans to cover contraception and sterilization as preventive services for women. On August 3, HHS published an interim final rule that references these guidelines, and allows HRSA to implement a very narrow and inadequate religious exemption. This action poses an unprecedented threat to the religious freedom of individuals and institutions.... Until now, no federal law has required private health plans to cover these. HRSA s statement that these recommendations do not include abortifacient drugs is misleading.... [However] the mandate includes drugs that may cause an abortion both before and after implantation. The public comment period on this interim final rule ends September 30. The Bishops of the U.S. have requested the faithful to express opposition to the new rules. For details go to Prayer for Life: Lord, fill your people with new hope. Make us vessels of hope to all around us, especially as we engage in the difficult work protecting human life. May we experience the peace and joy that come only from you. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen. MASS INTENTIONS Sun., 09/25 7:30 AM. RON AMATO 9:00 AM. PARISHIONERS OF ST. A S 10:30 AM. The process is designed for those baptized in other Christian traditions, baptized Catholics who never received the Sacrament of Eucharist, some who have been away from our faith, or anyone interested in our Catholic faith. It is a faith journey that encourages individuals to broaden and deepen their prayer life, to know God through the Scriptures, to come to know themselves more and to participate more in the parish life. 3 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action September 25th, th Sunday of Ordinary Time - The first son in today s Gospel said he would do his father s bidding, but did not. The second son balked at first, but then repented and did as he was asked. What service is God calling me to do? Which son am I more like? Office of Assistance Ministry assists victims - The Office of Victims Assistance Ministry of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was created in April 2002 to deal with allegations of past or current sexual abuse by clergy, religious and any lay person working or volunteering for the archdiocese. The office was charged with creating a safe and compassionate environment for victims to come forward, while ensuring that civil authorities are notified and victims are provided counseling and other assistance in the healing process. To contact the Office of Victims Assistance Ministry, please call Suzanne Healy, director, at (213) The hotline number to report sexual abuse is For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) St. Anastasia Social Events Group: Have you been waiting for news of Msgr. Vadakin s annual fall trip??? Here it is! October 12, 2011 at 8:30 am we are leaving the St A s parking lot for a tour of a Buddhist temple and a Mexican museum. In the morning we will tour Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple in Hacienda Heights where we will learn about Chinese culture and the Buddhist religion. In the afternoon we will tour the Homestead Museum on its six-acre historical site nestled among the busy streets of the City of Industry. This tour will provide us a unique way to look at Southern California s history when this land was still part of Mexico, through the 1920s. We ll return about 4:15pm, filled with new information about our Chinese and Mexican neighbors. Cost? Only $15 (lunch on your own). RSVP to Laurette by Oct. 8 to join this educational and fun day outing. Welcoming the New Roman Missal, Third Edition Words of the Week - Some of the words used in the new translation of the Mass may be unfamiliar to some Catholics. Each week we will provide the definitions of some key words which may help to increase your understanding of the rich theology that underlies these texts. Definitions are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition. Intercessor: One who makes a petition on behalf of others. Our unique intercessor is Jesus Christ, who intercedes on our behalf with the Father (see Rom 8:34). The priest at Mass acting in the person of Christ intercedes on behalf of the whole Church. Dear Parishioners, Today, Sunday, we will have VIRTUS training Safeguard the Children. The details are in a bulletin insert. I did however want to take advantage of the opportunity to remind all our parishioners about our Church commitment. For their protection, children must be supervised at all times. I especially am grateful to all our parishioners for being vigilant on this matter. And our parish community is particularly blessed by the work of Rose Fissinger and Karen Diaz, so that our parish facilities are safe. Our School Consultative Board has done an enormous amount of work to make sure that our school provides quality Catholic education. At the board meeting this past week, Karl Altergott was elected as the Chairman of the Board. Karl has been very involved along with a good number of others on the Science Committee of the Board, and will no doubt bring lots of skills in his new role. I also would like to express grateful thanks to Cheryl Hesse Fong for her tremendous leadership as she steps down as Chair. The organizational ability and dedication to the strategic plan for the school are part of the reason why St. Anastasia Catholic School is a shining example of quality Catholic Education. Have a good week!!! Devotedly yours, Fr. Gabe Getting to know...megan Hanley - My name is Ms. Hanley, and I am the new 7 th grade Homeroom and 7 th /8 th grade Language Arts teacher. It has always been an aspiration of mine to teach at a Catholic School ever since I attended Catholic Elementary School for nine years. The balance between a rigorous curriculum and loving environment, integrated with the Catholic faith is what made my experiences there so memorable. My years at a Catholic school were truly a gift, and it is my honor to continue on this valuable gift at St. Anastasia. Last year I taught 6 th grade at St. Mary of the Assumption School which is located in the northern most region of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I absolutely loved teaching middle school, and I feel so blessed to now be teaching at St. Anastasia. In 2009 I graduated from The California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. As an undergrad I majored in English, and then I continued on to receive both my Multiple Subject and Single Subject English teaching credentials. I look forward to using my education and experiences at St. Anastasia. Do you have any hobbies or special interests: In my free time I enjoy reading, staying active, sports, spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, and playing on my ipad! What is one thing you are looking forward to this year: I m looking forward to integrating the ipad into the curriculum! Is there anything else you would like to add: Everyone at St. Anastasia s has been so welcoming! I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to teach here, and I look forward to an amazing year!

ADVOCATE for Catholic principles and priorities in climate change policies - Write to your lawmakers and elected officials and urge them to act with urgency and put care for Creation, the poor, and the common good ahead of short-term special interests. Stewardship is a way of Life for St. Anastasia Church Living Faith for Kids Complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Philippians 2:2 Do you have a best friend who thinks the same things you do? Can you read each other s mind or finish each other s sentences? That joy of being known and understood is the type of unity and cooperation God wants for all His people. Jesus said, The Father and I are one (John 10:30). Now He turns and asks us to become one with Him. Let Jesus enter you in Word and Eucharist today at Mass. Then spend some time with Him in prayer this week. Familiar Insights Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren't that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings like us who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today s readings. People complain God isn t fair, and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. Actions speak louder than words. A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians that he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others interests and not their own. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. A novel idea? I don t think so. In Jesus story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows that the one who said he wouldn t work but did is way ahead of the one who said he would work but didn t. Talk is cheap. Heard that before? Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus. - Phil 2:5 SRE FIRST EUCHARIST FAMILIES PLEASE PICK UP YOUR DVD AND YOUR BANNERS IN THE RECTORY!
