November 6th, 2016, 32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: In today s second reading, St. Paul prays that the Thessalonians may be strengthened in every good deed and word. May we, too, be strengthened and empowered to use our time and talents for the good of others. 2 Thessalonians 2:17 NEW WORLD OF FAITH The Rosary in a time of distraction, by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez: The temptation is to use our work as an excuse to say we don t have enough time to pray, there is just too much to do. The danger is that we come to see time spent with God as time wasted, time that is boring or not productive. What we need is wholeness and integrity in our lives, a balance of work and prayer and rest and recreation. We do not need to reject technology or retreat from our responsibilities. But we do need to make sure that we are keeping things in their proper perspective. There is an expression from St. Augustine much strength and great speed, but all off track. That s how it is with our life if we are not rooted in prayer, in the natural everyday rhythms of contemplation and conversation with God. No matter how tireless or generous we might be in our service to others, no matter how much we are accomplishing for the Church in our ministries if our lives are not grounded in prayer, then we are not living the way God calls us to live. A life without prayer is never healthy and this is one of the reasons people burn out. This can be especially true in the Church. Pope Francis cautions us against thinking that our Christian mission can be reduced to activities, structures or programs. He calls pastoral activism an ever-present danger. What the Holy Spirit mobilizes is not an unruly activism, but above all loving attentiveness, he writes in Evangelii Gaudium ( The Joy of the Gospel ). October is a good time to reflect on this because this is the month the Church dedicates to the holy rosary (but any time of the year is good as well). The rosary is a contemplative prayer. And we all need more contemplation in our lives, more prayer. The rosary is a perfect prayer for a time of distraction, a remedy for activism. This Week: Saturday, November 5th / Sunday, November 6th Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Believers in Jesus are given the promise and hope of eternal life in heaven. Our hope is in the Lord, who made heaven and earth, and who remains faithful to those who believe. For those who believe in Jesus and persevere in faith with the help of God s grace, the trials of this world will ultimately pass away. As Jesus disciples, we will one day come to share eternal life in heaven. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading tells of seven brothers who, because of their great love for God and the hope of eternal life, are able to face martyrdom with courage. The second reading reminds us that God is with us always to watch over and protect us. In the Gospel, Jesus refutes the Sadducees in their denial of the Resurrection. Gospel Jesus foretells the destruction of Jerusalem, the persecution of his followers. But their perseverance will be their salvation (Luke 21:5-19). Kids Living Faith: Sunday, November 6th, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time But the Lord is faithful. - Thessalonians 3:3 Have you ever been disappointed by someone? Have you ever been the one who disappointed someone else? Sometimes we just don t live up to our promises, even if we try. Sometimes we forget. Sometimes we fail. We re not perfect. But God is different, and God is perfect. God is always faithful to us. This doesn t mean that our lives will never have problems. There will still be days when we are sad. 4 Ministry in Community A Mass to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe will be offered on Monday, December 12th at 6:30 pm, here at St, Anastasia. Fr. Leszek will officiate. All are welcome! Celebrate Christmas at the Festival of Lights Join the St. Anastasia Social Club as we travel to the Mission Inn in Riverside to partake in their fabulous Festival of Lights holiday displays. We will start with lunch at the famous Cask and Cleaver Steakhouse in Riverside, followed by a guided tour of the Inn and museum. Free time will be available for browsing and shopping. The bus will be leaving St. Anastasia at 11:45 AM on Friday, December 9, and will return about 8:30 PM. The price is $80, which must be paid in full by November 4. As always, all gratuities are included. To make reservations or for more information, call Laurette at Vatican Clarifies the Rules for Cremation: Bury, Don t Scatter The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued new guidelines for cremation for Catholics. Cremation has been permitted in the Catholic Church since 1963, but many Catholics don't know there are also many rules surrounding the choice. According to the new guidelines, burial is still preferred, but cremation is an option. When a loved one has been cremated, their ashes must be kept intact, the same as one would treat a body. The ashes may not be separated or scattered. Instead, they should remain in a proper vessel that is interred in a proper place, such as a cemetery or church. Only the bishop can authorize an exception to this storage requirement in extraordinary circumstances. JOIN OUR ST. May his soul through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen LIFE EVERLASTING - The second book of Maccabees tells a powerful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inflicted upon the brothers and their mother, is their belief in the promise of resurrection and life everlasting in God. Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ s message of love, so that he might be delivered from other nonbelievers anxious to do him harm. The apostle is confident in such prayer, just as he is confident in the everlasting support of Jesus and God the Father. And there s that everlasting word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting albeit meaningless question about the status of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that marriage isn t an issue for the risen children of God. More importantly, he assures them that their ancestors do live on in God, even as evidenced by the Father s words to Moses. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection. Under your title of the Immaculate Conception, you are the Patroness of the United States. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of your people.
