1 ST. ANASTASIA CATHOLIC CHURCH FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER SUNDAY,, APRILA 21st, 2013 Priest Receives Medal of Honor - Fr. Emil Kapaun, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on April 11. The Medal of Honor is the highest military honor, awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. During one of the early battles of the Korean War, U.S. Army Chaplain Fr. Emil Kapaun walked through withering enemy fire to provide comfort and medical aid to his comrades. When they found themselves surrounded by the enemy, the able-bodied men were ordered to retreat. However, Chaplain Kapaun, aware of his certain capture, elected to stay behind with the wounded. Confined in the notorious Prison Camp #5, Fr. Kapaun heroically supported his men by stealing food to feed them, caring for the sick and injured, and inspiring them with his faith and generosity. The priest from Pilsen, Kansas showed his fellow prisoners that it was worth the effort to fight the cold, the starvation, the brainwashing, the disease, and the punishment to stay alive and make it home to their families and their country. He was not only a man of hope, but a man that was able to instill hope in others. Both hated and feared by his captors, Fr. Kapaun was denied treatment for his own infirmities. He died in captivity and is buried in an unmarked grave. But there are men alive today who attribute their own spiritual and physical survival to the complete self-giving of Fr. Emil Kapaun. The case for Fr. Kapaun's beatification and canonization has also been submitted to Rome. Fr. Emil Kapaun is the namesake of Westchester / Playa del Rey Knights of Columbus Council W. 2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Fourth Sunday of Easter: Paul and Barnabas encountered both violent rejection and joyful acceptance of the message that they preached. We, too, may meet with mixed reactions when we use our gifts in the service of God. But, the Gospel assures us, the reward for those who follow faithfully is eternal life. Dear Parishioners, Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. A very good prayer to learn by heart is Psalm 23, "The Lord is my Shepherd..." On this day I would like to ask your special prayers for your spiritual leaders. Please pray for Pope Francis and for Archbishop Gomez. Please pray for parents who are the first spiritual leaders of their children. Pray for religious Sisters and Brothers. And pray for Msgr. Cox, Father Tom, Msgr. Vadakin, and me. Ask God to make us holy shepherds! I also would ask you to pray for the young men of our parish. We need holy and happy priests, faithful and dedicated priests, loving and wise priests. These priests will come from our families. To love and serve God is the greatest blessing. there is no greater privilege. Please pray that young people from our parish will respond generously to God's call and find fulfillment and happiness in serving Him. Jesus is our Good Shepherd who never leaves his flock untended! Being completely cherished unconditionally loved is more that we can fully comprehend. Yet, we are! No matter what difficulties or sufferings unfold in our lives, God does not separate us from His love. Being so loved by God, we respond by living with gratitude and humility as we mirror this love to those we encounter. Liturgy of the Word: In Acts, Paul and Barnabas tell jealous Jews they are to be a light to the Gentiles. In Revelation, John tells of a vision where a crowd from every nation, race, people, and tongue gathers before the throne of God and is shepherded by the lamb never to hunger or thirst again. 4 Ministry in Community The Good Shepherd: The Good Shepherd not only knows us but has given His life for us. We belong to the Shepherd. His life is the source of our life. One part of this relationship is firm God s part. The Father has entrusted us to the Son, and the Son will not let go of our hand. The other part of this relationship depends on us, of course. In today s Gospel, Jesus assumes our open - hearted good will. My sheep hear my voice and they follow me. This hearing and following is a daily undertaking that implies responsibility. Take Paul and Barnabas, for example. They move ever closer to the reality that salvation was also meant for those members of the flock who did not yet know God s saving power. The Gentiles were the sheep known by the Shepherd. Paul could finally see that now was the acceptable time for them to know the Shepherd. Now the circle could be completed. Finally, those who were known and loved by the God of Jesus could know and follow the God of Jesus. There will never be a last chapter to this story of salvation. - Copyright J. S. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) On Sunday, May 5, Saint Anastasia Parish will be distributing baby bottles at all the Masses to assist the life-saving work of Los Angeles Pregnancy Services (LAPS). LAPS, a pro-life counseling center, provides moms with spiritual, emotional, and material support before and after their babies are born. LAPS also provides information on adoption for women who want to carry their child, but aren't ready to parent. It's easy to help. Please take a baby bottle home, fill it with coins or bills and return it to St. Anastasia by the end of May. 5 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith FACT OF LIFE - They Looked Like Babies: Testimony has concluded for the week in the murder trial of abortion practitioner Kermit Gosnell. But, late Thursday, members of the jury heard from a teenage girl who found an odd workstudy program at his clinic. Ashley Baldwin, a 15-year -old sophomore at University City High School, found herself employed at Gosnell s abortion clinic and, despite no medical license or training, working alongside him performing gruesome late-term abortions.... Baldwin landed the job because her mother already worked there. She was paid, and in no time went from answering phones to doing ultrasounds, administering intravenous medicine, and, ultimately, assisting in abortions performed by her mentor, Kermit Gosnell.... Baldwin also told the jury about seeing at least five aborted babies moving, breathing, and, in one case, screeching after late-term procedures at the clinic. In Pennsylvania, abortions are legal up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. After that, medical experts say, a fetus is capable of living outside the womb. They looked just like regular babies, Baldwin said.... Although she sometimes felt uneasy about what she saw, Baldwin said, Gosnell always had an explanation: He told me that s how it was supposed to go.... Gosnell faces 43 criminal counts, including eight counts of murder in the death of one patient and seven newborn infants. The article goes on to note that Corrado Clini, Italy's environment minister, has been working with the foundation, the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the Brazilian government and the Rio Church's World Youth Day organizing team to promote the reflection of young people on the importance of biodiversity and protecting the environment. He also is working to encourage cooperation between several Italian and Brazilian companies to reduce the energy and water used at WYD and to recycle as much of the refuse they produce as possible. Psalm 100:3 This verse says something very simple, but very important: God has made everything, when we know that, we know we belong to Him. Belonging to God means being cared for, just like a shepherd takes care of a flock of sheep.
