Long life and contentment will be His. Psalm 90:15-16 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Let us seek the Lord s help in overcoming temptation to sin - During this penitential season, let us use the Lenten disciplines of fasting, prayer and almsgiving to follow more closely the example of Jesus in the desert. Let us do our part of confront evil and sin in the world, seek God s help in overcoming temptation in our own lives, and ask Him to help us persevere in faith. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Our first reading recounts the sin of Adam and Eve, with the serpent speaking for Satan, as their tempter. The second reading identifies Jesus as the new Adam, who pays the price for the sin of the first Adam, and brings salvation to our world. In the Gospel, Jesus is tempted in the desert, but does not give in to the devil s temptation. FACT OF LIFE The Whole of Society Must Defend Life [Today you] question contemporary society profoundly and challenge it to find answers that are appropriate for the good of the human person. Post-abortion syndrome -- the serious psychological difficulties often felt by women who have taken recourse to voluntary abortion -- reveals the irrepressible voice of the moral conscience, and the grave wound it suffers each time that human action betrays the person s innate vocation to good, and of which he gives witness. It would be useful also in this reflection to focus attention on the conscience, at times blurred, of the fathers of the children, who often abandon pregnant women.... It is, in fact, the duty of the moral conscience to discern good from evil in the different situations of existence, in order that, on the basis of this judgment, the human being can orient himself towards the good.... In the moral conscience, God speaks to each one and invites him to defend human life at all times. (Pope Benedict XVI s address to the Pontifical Academy for Life, Feb 28, 2011). Create a map with your child showing acceptable routes to and from school using main roads and avoiding shortcuts and isolated areas. Make sure young children are properly supervised going to and from school, whether it is by you as a parent/ guardian, an older sibling or another trusted adult. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at LENT 2011 Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. We Need Stuff! - The St. Anastasia school children will be participating in a school family activity for Lent on Tue., March 15th. Each school family will be creating their very own Station of the Cross. We are asking you to participate in this event by bringing in a variety of objects, artifacts, related to our suffering, our everyday work, and for the greater glory of God as we strive for the Kingdom of Heaven. Wednesday(s) 5:30 pm Mass followed by the Simple Soup in the Parish Hall This Simple Sharing and Breaking Bread Activity will be Hosted by different ministries for each of the Wednesdays during Lent (except Holy Week, April 20th).* WHAT IS SIMPLE SOUP? WHY DO WE DO IT? The Simple Soup Supper is an intergenerational fellowship that meets for a soup dinner after the Wednesday evening 5:30 pm Lenten Mass. Various ministries HOST this activity supplying the soups and bread. The Host group also assists with the clean up. There is a basket at each table for those who wish to donate. This is a free will offering. The money collected during these Lenten evenings will be given to St. Margaret s Center. This year St. Anastasia Parish families will be asked to Host a Simple Soup on Wednesday, March 30 th. The Bulletin will have a sign up sheet for those who would like to participate. Matthew 4:1 The temptation of Jesus was no accident. The Holy Spirit arranged it so that Jesus would face the very same challenges we face, and He would overcome them. Lent is a time when the whole Church is led into a kind of desert to face our challenges as followers of Jesus. Through prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we give the Spirit a chance to touch our hearts in a new way. This week: How will you open your heart to the Spirit this Lent? Ashes - From Death to New Life: When the priest or deacon places ashes on your forehead on Ash Wednesday, he says either turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel or Remember, man, that you are dust and to dust you will return. Either sentence reminds us of who we are: sinners who will one day face death. Lent begins here and it will lead us to the celebration of Easter, where Jesus defeats sin and death. Traditionally the ashes are made by burning the palms from Palm Sunday of the previous year. The cheering crowd that waved palms to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem left Him when He was crucified just as we leave behind all worldly success at the moment of our own death. Lord Jesus, bless our Lenten journey so we can follow you into the new life of Easter. REMINDERS...
