First Sunday of Lent - Today s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the promised land. Is my offering at today s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me? Dear Parishioners, On this First Sunday of Lent, our thoughts turn to entering a "spiritual desert" with the Lord Jesus. While we live in the world, the spirit of Lent reminds us that we do not belong to the world. We belong to the Lord. So let's try to strike a balance seeking those things that are really necessary -- prayer, charity, goodness, holiness, love, faith. With Jesus we die to ourselves in order to rise with Him to newness of life. WOW!!! What a historical time in our Church! In a period of his life when many people are already retired for many years, Pope Benedict XVI assumed the burden of the papacy and served for almost 8 years. This is of course a time to pray for the Holy Spirit to bless Pope Benedict, the Cardinals, and the future successor to the See of Peter -- and indeed to bless our entire Church with unity and peace. We do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God! Enjoy spiritual progress! I miss you all. 3 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Reflection on Today s Readings: Focus: By turning away from sin and resisting temptation we grow spiritually. The goal of our Lenten journey is to renew and deepen our relationship with God. May we seek to grow stronger spiritually by resisting temptation and by repenting of our sins. As we turn away from sin, we will come to love the Lord more fully. That love will flow from us into all aspects of our lives and subsequently affect the lives of others. Liturgy of the Word: Moses instructs the Israelites to prepare a tithe of produce as a sign of gratitude to God for freeing them from slavery in Egypt and bringing them to the Promised Land. Paul teaches the Romans that those who believe in their hearts and confess with their lips that Jesus is Lord, will be saved. In the Gospel, Jesus is tried and tempted by Satan in the desert. PASSING THE TEST: Test is a four-letter word. Spelling tests, driving tests, SATs, all bring a knot to the stomach. Tests are something we would rather forgo, but also something we must undergo. Lent, too, is a four-letter word and is also a kind of test, for the only way to Easter is to pass through Lent. Today s reading from Deuteronomy commends Israel for its faith in the God who saves. No matter the tribulation, Israel s faith enables it to persevere. This faith/test theme also appears in the reading from Romans. Paul boldly asserts that faith in Christ will see the believer through any trial. The Gospel passage makes it clear that even Jesus was tested. It describes a test, a struggle between good and evil, that dramatically demonstrates Jesus faith in the power of God s life in Him. This power enables Him to overcome temptation. This power is with all of us who celebrate the test of Lent, a power enabling us to pass with flying colors. (Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.)

4 Ministry in Community Throughout this year of Faith, make an effort to gather around the table more often and share a meal with family and friends. Lord, we thank You for the blessings of this day and for this wonderful meal. Help us to remember those who have so much less than we do. Bless our family and friends. Help us grow in love and care for each other. We ask You to give comfort, strength and peace to those who are sick or struggling in any way. Romans 10:12 We all know about distinctions or differences between people, don t we? Some are tall and others are short; some light-skinned, others dark; some boys and others girls. And as St. Paul said, some are Jews and some are Greeks. But as Catholics and Christians, we are all alike in our faith in Jesus. He is the one through whom we are all one. As we journey through the Holy Season of Lent, please consider joining us for one or all of these opportunities. They are designed to help you think, ponder, reflect and consider and eventually perhaps to discuss about the meaning of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ for you! Wednesday(s) 5:30 pm Mass followed by the Simple Soup in the Parish Hall. This Simple Sharing and Breaking Bread Activity will be Hosted by different ministries for five consecutive Wednesdays beginning Ash Wednesday. NO Simple Soup on Wednesday, March 20th and March 27th) WHAT IS SIMPLE SOUP? WHY DO WE DO IT? The Simple Soup Supper is an intergenerational fellowship that meets for a soup dinner after the Wednesday evening 5:30 PM Lenten Mass. Various ministries HOST this activity supplying the soups and bread. The Host group also assists with the clean up. There is a basket at each table for those who wish to donate. This is a free will offering. The money collected during the Lenten evenings will be given to St. Margaret s Center. This year St. A s Parish families will be asked to Host a Simple Soup on Wednesday, March 13th. There will be sign-up sheet in the Courtyard for those who would like to participate. Each school family will be creating their very own Station of the Cross. We are asking you to participate in this event by bringing in a variety of objects, artifacts, related to our suffering, our everyday work, for the greater glory of God as we strive for the Kingdom of Heaven. LENT 2013 Lent began with Ash Wednesday, last Wed., Feb. 13th, this year. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations: ABSTINENCE: A penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING & ABSTINENCE: In addition to abstinence fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice another forms of self-denial that suitable to their condition. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Will take place each Friday beginning Friday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. First Sunday of Lent, Sunday, February 17, 2013 The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. - Romans 10:8 FACT OF LIFE - 40 Days for Life Begins: The first 40 Days for Life campaign of 2013 will take place in 261 locations from coast to coast in the United States and Canada... plus cities in England, Australia, Poland and Spain -- and for the first time ever in Nigeria, South Africa, Wales, and Russia! 40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program: Prayer and fasting, Constant vigil, and Community outreach. 40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America. The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities... and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge. 40 Days for Life run from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday.
