2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time - The crowd in today s Gospel demanded a sign from Jesus. May our faithful stewardship be a sign to others that we, like the Ephesians in the second reading, have laid aside our former way of life and acquired a fresh, spiritual way of thinking in Christ. GOD S WORK - We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being God s work. But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is God s work? This Week: Saturday, August 1st / Sunday, August 2nd Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: God gives us the strength to follow Him. When the Israelites escaped Egypt and sought a new life, God gave them quail in the evening and manna in the mornings so they could be strong for their journey across the desert. Similarly, Jesus gives us the gift of Himself in the Eucharist so that we might have the strength and grace needed to persevere as we walk our pilgrim journey of faith on earth. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In Exodus, God sends manna and quail in response to the Israelites complaint that they are starving in the desert. The Letter to the Ephesians reminds us of the importance of turning to the Holy Spirit to be strengthened and renewed so that we continue to grow in holiness. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals that He is the Bread of Life. 4 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith ATTENTION LOYOLA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS! We re working on scheduling a daily school bus originating in the Westchester area. The more students we get, the cheaper the cost of the bus per student. There will be one central bus pick-up location and two buses available after school, one immediately following dismissal and the other at approximately 5:30 pm to accommodate after school activities. We need to sign a contract with the bus company prior to August 15 th in order to provide service effective September 1 st. Through August 30 Get the online form at st-anastasia.org/ sacraments or request via at confirmation- Mission Co-op Collection to take place next weekend, August 8/9, here at St. Anastasia. The Mission Co-Op at the Masses on August 8-9 will benefit the Lay Mission-Helpers Association. Founded in 1955, the Lay Mission -Helpers Association trains, sends and supports lay people (single, married couples, families) to serve in overseas Catholic mission dioceses for a minimum of 3 years. They serve in a professional capacity in areas such as health, education, engineering, etc., and witness their faith by how they live their lives. Chad Ribordy, who is representing LMH, served for 12 years with his wife and children in Brazil. Chad is now LMH s Associate Director. Thank you for you support and generosity. For more info, please contact Chris Turkmany (310) FACT OF LIFE Being Catholic Today - CNA/EWTN News It is not discrimination for a Catholic to publicly profess his faith, Cardinal Doanald Wuerl of Washington insists in his new pastoral letter, Being Catholic Today. It has become increasingly acceptable, he stated, to disparage as bigoted and mean-spirited anyone who seeks to uphold fundamental truths about the human person that have been recognized throughout history. Church teaching is rooted in an authentic humanism, he added, and it is neither discrimination nor an undue imposition on the freedom of others to promote that belief and live by it. The letter, published May 24, outlines various challenges facing Catholics in the U.S. who want to practice their faith publicly threats loom to the practice of the faith, because some wish to impose a secular morality on everyone, including Catholics, he explained. This would include a forced tolerance for acts such as abortion or sexual activity that contradicts Church teaching. As Catholics, who we are cannot be separated from how we live. Jesus taught us to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and care for the sick and those in need, and the Catholic Church s history of educating and serving the poor is long and well known. Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Sunday, August 2nd. I am the Bread of Life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Grumble, grumble, grumble. Sometimes it seems like that s all Moses people did. Of course they were stuck in the desert with nothing to eat, so maybe that grumbling came from their stomachs growling! God told Moses that he d heard their grumbling and would answer with food. But Jesus tells us that sometimes what we want isn t really what we need. The Israelites wanted food for their bellies, but what they needed what we all need is real food for the soul.
