Lancy Pereira Germaine Wensley This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. Alleluia! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The source of the Joy, Hope and Peace is Easter! For surely and truly if there were no Easter: if Christ did not rise from the dead in a newness of life, then joy, hope and peace would have been impossible for everyone, forever. This needs to be understood! No Easter: no joy, no hope, no peace at all! The feast of Easter is celebrating Jesus victory over death and mankind s hope for eternal life. This feast gives us the new hope of our own Resurrection at the end of times. This feast of Easter tells us that what happened to Jesus will happen to us too. We too will rise one day with him. This celebration forms the heart of our Christian living. It is in reality our faith and the expectation of the future glory. Let us thank God for the gift of the risen Jesus given once again to us. This Resurrected Jesus gives us His message of peace as He gave to all the disciples every time He met them. Today as we celebrate His rising from the dead He gives the same message of peace. We pray that this peace will remain in our hearts always to make us His messengers in the world of today. On behalf of Msgr. Vadakin, Msgr. Cox, Fr. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, has risen - let us rejoice and be glad! Today, and for the next fifty days, we will celebrate and rejoice in the triumph of Christ over the power of death. It is our primary and foundational Christian feast. Through it, the course of human history is changed forever as Christ has, in the words of the Exsultet, broken the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld. Reflections on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading tells of how Peter, after encountering the risen Lord Jesus and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, is enabled to boldly preach the Gospel message. The second reading reminds us that our lives can be transformed by opening ourselves to the power of the risen Lord Jesus. The Gospel recounts Mary of Magdala going to the tomb of Jesus only to find it empty. EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD: Very early in the morning after the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb to anoint Jesus body with precious oils. The reward of this good and conscientious steward was to be among the first to know that Jesus had been raised from the dead! Alleluia! Pray for the healing of abuse victims Each of us, as members of our Catholic community, can contribute to the healing by remembering survivors of abuse in our prayers. The following prayer is from the USCCB. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people s wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find justice. Kids Living Faith: Sunday, April 16th, 2017 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever. Psalm 118:1 Did you wake up a little early today, thinking about the Easter surprises waiting for you? Maybe you searched for a basket full of treats or for Easter eggs? The best Easter morning surprise, though, is something that s empty: Jesus tomb. When Jesus friends see that He isn t there, they re full of surprise and joy! Paluch TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION - Easter is nearly three weeks later this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was complete, on the Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. The ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday. The traditional rule is that Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25. The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mind-bending exceptions and charts with "golden numbers," "dominical letters," and "epacts" measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. In principle, the Catholic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council. FACT OF LIFE Easter: The Victory Over Death Easter celebrates the victory of life. Christians do not come to Church on Easter simply to congratulate Jesus for rising from the dead. They come in order to touch their own victory over death. In rising, Christ destroyed not only His own death, but ours! He overturned the entire kingdom of death. Death has no more power over Him; nor does it have ultimate power over those who live in Him. The influence of the Church on the world, therefore, is the influence of a community which already participates in victory over death. That influence moves the structures and choices of society away from death and destruction, and toward the affirmation, in word and deed, of the precious gift of life. It would be a profound distortion of the meaning of Easter if we separate, in thought or deed, our faith in the Resurrection from our efforts to secure justice and respect for every life. The Church that celebrates Easter also lives Easter. The victory has already been won, but has not yet fully unfolded. We therefore rejoice and struggle at the same time. We have unshakeable confidence that the power of life is greater than the forces of death. Yet we must not relax our efforts to protect God's gift of life from the destructive forces all around it. As St. Augustine once said, we sing "Alleluia," but as we sing we must "keep going" on the arduous journey that is ours. Father Frank Pavone
