2 This Week: Saturday, December 1st, 2018 / Sunday, December 2nd, 2018 First Sunday of Advent Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: The Jesus who is born in time and history is also the Christ who will come in glory to judge all. The season of Advent begins with a call to perseverance and vigilance as we prepare to celebrate not just the historical event of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, but our central belief that Christ will come again in glory to judge all humanity. Our readings are chosen to help us reflect on this great truth and be prepared for the coming of Christ. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In a time of great upheaval and chaos for Israel, Jeremiah reassures the people of better days to come, when a descendent of David will rule them with integrity and honesty. Looking forward to the return of Christ in glory, Saint Paul reminds us that we must strive for true holiness now. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that no matter what befalls us in this life, we are to have confidence in him, the Son of Man. 3 ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING & REFLECTION The Season of Advent is soon upon us. Advent is the season of waiting for Jesus coming. During this season we focus on being ready to receive Christ. We need people, individuals and families to volunteer to participate in this liturgical activity. Your presence and participation in this activity would be a great blessing. The sign-up poster is in the Vestibule this weekend. A Mass to honor will be offered on 6 PM, FOLLOWED BY MASS), here at Saint Anastasia. Fr. Leszek will officiate. A reception will follow in Diamond Courtyard. Wednesday: Saturday: CONFESSIONS: 6:15 TO 6:45 PM 3:30 TO 4:45 PM TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION: (For those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound). Please call the parish office FAMILY VISITATION MINISTRY: The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at , or the Church Office at CHURCH HOURS: The Church is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6 AM 6 PM (closing time). On Wednesdays, Divine Mercy is from 6-7 pm. There is Confession from 6:15-6:45 pm. (During Devotion). Church will be closed at 7 pm. (Only on this day.) The Church will be closed on Saturdays after the 5:00 PM Mass. Phone hours are: 9 am to 3 pm parish@st-anastasia.org. AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? 4 Saint Anastasia was born in 281 A.D. and became a perfect symbol of peace, humanity, and solidarity. Her Feast Day is December 25th. She is a symbol of dialogue and collaboration. Las Posadas is a traditional Hispanic Festival which re-enacts Mary and Joseph s journey in search of an inn. This is a beautiful opportunity to experience what Mary and Joseph may have felt as doors were closed to them, and then finally opened to them in the true spirit of hospitality. You are ALL invited to this celebration of Prayers and Songs, and join us for a reception in Pastors Plaza for Tamales, Churros, Mariachis and much more!! We also invite our parishioners to bring a taste of their Christmas tradition to share! And to our children to come dressed up as Angels and Shepherds! Celebration of Our Lady, the Virgin of Guadalupe, Sunday, December 9, 2018 The Archdiocese of Los Angeles will host the 87th annual celebration of the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe with a procession and Mass in East Los Angeles on Sunday, Dec. 9th. This year s theme is Light of Peace and Justice. The celebrations will begin at 10:30 am at the corner of Cesar Chavez Ave. and Ford Blvd. with a procession featuring floats and Aztec Matachines dance groups. Those participating with a float will have the opportunity to receive first, second, and third prizes based on how the theme is reflected, with creativity and overall beauty of the float s presentation. The procession will conclude at the East Los Angeles College Stadium at 1 pm with a Mass presided by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez and concelebrated by the auxiliary bishops and priests from throughout the Archdiocese. All are welcome!

5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Origins of Advent Advent began sometime after the 4th century as a time of preparation for Epiphany not in anticipation of Christmas. Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ by remembering the visit of the Magi and the Baptism of Jesus. At this time new Christians were baptized and received into the faith, and so the early Church instituted a 40-day period of fasting and repentance. Later in the 6th century, Pope St Gregory the Great was the first to associate this season of Advent with the coming of Christ. Originally it was not the coming of Christ-child that was anticipated, but rather, the second coming of Christ. By the Middle Ages the Church had extended the celebration of Advent to the familiar format we know today. The early weeks are rich with the prophecies of Isaiah, reminding us to wait and prepare for the coming of the Messiah. Later, the pace quickens and we focus more directly on the events leading up to Jesus birth. Faith for Kids Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy... - Luke 21:34 What happens when you are extra tired? For most people, it can be hard to pay attention to what we are doing. We can t give our best effort. Jesus warns us not to let our hearts get drowsy. We can keep our hearts rested and energized with prayer. We can also turn to Jesus in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation. There we get strength to live as Jesus wants us to live. Jesus, wake me up so I can always act with love. Did you Know? Go beyond just saying no to teach children about polite excep ons Rules about politeness seem to be in contradic on to the rules we teach children about avoiding predators and responding to behaviors that make them uncomfortable. It s important to expand on the idea of saying no when someone asks them to cross a boundary. Explain that there are situa ons where being rude is acceptable, if that s what it takes, and help them understand that being polite has its limits.
