2 SUN. 05/07 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: Jesus says, I came that they may have life, and have it to the full. Good stewards are grateful for the gift of life and joyfully share their abundance with others. John 10:10 THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD - The Twenty-third Psalm, today's responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads "Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage" (Psalm 23:4) connects this week's scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: "I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). This Week: Saturday, May 6th / Sunday, May 7th, 2017 Fourth Sunday of Easter Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Christ is the very center of our faith. He is our shepherd and we listen to His voice, through Him we enter into fullness of life. We who belong to Jesus by virtue of our Baptism now share in His mission of redemption. How we prepare for this task is important. We need to strive for repentance, lead lives of prayers and patient endurance, and desire to listen attentively to His voice. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading from Acts tells of Peter, empowered by the Holy Spirit, boldly proclaiming the risen Christ and calling all to repentance and baptism. The second reading exhorts the early Christians to imitate Christ: they are to be patient as Christ was patient in the face of His suffering. Our Gospel reminds us that we are to follow Christ as the sheep follow the shepherd: for as the shepherd cares for his sheep, so Christ cares for each of us. Gospel -- "Show us the Father," Philip asks Jesus. To which Jesus replies: "Whoever sees me, sees the Father" (John 14:1-12). These cards are available for those whose mothers are living and for those whose mothers have passed away. We have placed them by the side doors and in the Vestibule. Please complete an envelope with your mother s name (living or deceased) and place it in the collection basket or drop it off at the Parish Office. Stress can affect the children around you: Everyone has stress, whether it is a bad day at work, car trouble, or simply too many things to do. It is important to learn how to manage your stress for your own sake and for the children around you. Too much stress can make it hard to parent effectively. After a while, your children may show signs of stress, too. To learn more about how to identify and cope with stress, visit During the month of May, St. Anastasia Parish is collecting donations for the life-saving work of Los Angeles Pregnancy Services (LAPS). Return the distributed baby bottle full of coins or dollars, or simply place your donation in the bottle collection containers by May 30. We will hop on the bus at 9 AM and head to the San Buenaventura Mission for a docent-led tour, followed by a cruise of the Ventura Harbor. After a lunch stop at Spinnaker Village, we will head for the Camarillo Outlet Stores for some bargain shopping. We will arrive back at St. Anastasia about 5 PM. The trip cost is $50 and includes the bus, docent tour, harbor cruise, and all gratuities (lunch and shopping are not included). Please call Laurette at to make a reservation. Psalm 23:1 What s the difference between something we need and something we want? A want is something that would be nice to have. like a new bike or ice cream. A need is something we can t live without, like water, healthy food or shelter. Sometimes we get wants and needs confused. Or we forget that many people on our planet don t have the basics that we enjoy, like clean water, good food or safe homes. God gives us all that we need. But if we have more than that, He calls us to share it. Dear God, help me see how I can be a Blessing to someone in need. Suicide rates have risen steadily in the last 15 years, tripling for teen girls under age 14, and suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged There is also a concerning new trend of live-streamed suicides through social media. But while supporters declare that 13 Reasons Why raises awareness of suicide, suicide prevention experts write that it hurts more than helps. Throughout the show, Hannah s high school classmates grapple with challenging issues including substance abuse, bullying, sexting, and violence. The most jarring and unnerving scenes involve graphic depictions of sexual assault and suicide. These scenes are disturbing at best, grossly negligent and irresponsible at worst. Showing the explicit action of Hannah s suicide is unnecessary and it becomes the climactic scene, the agency for her immortalization. Showing suicide live and in stereo helps no one, and undermines the message of prevention."
