FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT: When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Lazarus, He responded, This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for God s glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified. Every aspect of our lives our gifts as well as our sufferings can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for others and ourselves. John 11:4 JESUS' MINISTRY SUMMARIZED - The story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead is the single longest story (apart from the Passion) in the Gospel of John. In it we find a summary of most of Jesus' ministry. We see his very human nature as he is moved by Martha and Mary's sorrows and as he himself weeps at the tomb of Lazarus. He is the wisdom of God's Word made flesh as he explains to his followers that the death of Lazarus will serve as a sign of the glory of God. He crowns the miracles he works in John's Gospel (which began with the most "human" miracle of making new wine at Cana's wedding) by raising Lazarus from the dead--a "preview," if you will, of his own death and resurrection to come. This portrait of Jesus reminds us, as we near the end of our Lenten journey, that he is with us, knows us, understands us in every moment of our lives. He knows the joy of our human feasting, he knows the sorrow of our weeping. As we prepare to walk with him through the days of Holy Week, we are filled with faith that--through Christ--God's glory will be with us in every moment of our lives and--with Christ--in our life everlasting. This Week: Saturday, April 1st / Sunday, April 2nd, 2017 Fifth Sunday of Lent Today s Gospel recounts Jesus saying, I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live. These words clearly identify Jesus as the Son of God, the author of life and the one who brings our salvation. The words also give the promise and hope of eternal life in heaven to all who believe in Him and persevere in faith. Reflections on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the reading from Ezekiel, the prophet tells the Israelites that they will know God because He gives them life and frees the from enslavement. Saint Paul explains to the Romans that the life-giving spirit they received through Christ frees them from both sin and death. In the Gospel reading, Jesus proclaims that He is the resurrection and the life and that all who live and believe in Him will never die. 5 2017 Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Each Wednesday during Lent we have 6:30 & 8 am, and a 5:30 pm Mass. And Stations of the Cross on Fridays, at 7:30 pm. Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! HOLY THURSDAY LITURGY: WASHING OF THE FEET: Holy Thursday s Liturgy (April 13th, 7:30 pm) needs volunteers for the foot washing. Please consider being a part of this beautiful and humbling celebration. Sign-up board in the Vestibule. EASTER FLOWER ENVELOPES ARE IN THE VESTIBULE AND BY THE DOORS. Please use them to make a donation in memory of a loved one or for a particular intention. Drop them in the collection basket or at the Rectory. Walk the Stations of the Cross! - On Good Friday, April 1 pm, we will be having the traditional Stations of the Cross in the Church and a familyfriendly Stations of the Cross using our Stations planted throughout the campus. The stations were created by our school children. All are welcome. Time: 1 pm. Meet in the Courtyard. Each Wednesday, following the 5:30 evening Mass during Lent, and throughout the year, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, private prayer, and adoration will take place. We will also celebrate Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction. This prayerful liturgy will take place from 6 to 7 pm on all the Wednesdays of Lent and throughout the year. God bless you! Kids Living Faith: Sunday, April 2nd, 2017 Fifth Sunday of Lent And Jesus wept - John 11:35 Everybody hurts sometimes. Jesus understands that really well. He is the Son of God, but that doesn t mean that when He walked on the earth He was some kind of robot or just a spirit. Jesus was flesh and blood like you. He felt many of the things that you feel. He got hungry. He stubbed his toe. He laughed and got excited. He felt sadness and disappointment. Jesus was a lot like you. You can be like Jesus too! Everything Jesus did, He did with love. What will you do with love today? Lord, help me be like you today! FACT OF LIFE Mountain View, California Planned Parenthood* is on the run! said Bob, the campaign leader in Mountain View, California during my recent stop at the 40 Days for Life vigil there. They ve had five campaigns in Mountain View. Planned Parenthood is upset ready to move to a different location and asking the city to pay for it. We are certainly causing a stir, especially in California, by being out there and objecting to the city paying for their move, said Bob. I asked Bob and many of the volunteers why they have been so successful... and they all gave the same answer. Rita! Rita Donnelly is 87 years-old and has been active in the pro life movement longer than I've been alive. She said she goes out to pray and trusts God with the results. It s all the Holy Spirit, Rita said. I m just so inspired to see so many young people involved after decades of being out here.
