2 Reflection on Today s Readings: Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 5th Sunday In Ordinary time - In today s Gospel, Jesus says that God is glorified when a disciple, grafted in Christ, produces abundantly and bears much fruit. The disciple must then be a good steward of that abundance. FOCUS: God calls us to the prophetic work of sharing the Gospel message - By our Baptism we all join Christ in the roles of priest, prophet and King. The prophetic role can be particularly challenging, as opportunities to share the Gospel message in word or example are constant. This is a fundamental requirement of our baptismal calling, however, so we must undertake it, even when it is inconvenient or tedious. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Job compares his life to someone in forced service, as he tells of the sufferings and hardships of his life. In the second reading, Paul tells the Corinthians that preaching is his purpose; he must do it. In the Gospel, Jesus heals Peter s mother-in-law and many others who were ill or possessed. He moves on, to preach and heal throughout all of Galilee. 3 Ministry sends us beyond the parish FACT OF LIFE A Thread for Weaving Life Down syndrome is not a disease. It s a genetic disorder with a variety of symptoms. Therapy can ease the burden of those symptoms, but Down syndrome is permanent. There s no cure. People with Down syndrome have mild to moderate developmental delays. They have low to middling cognitive function.... Currently about 5,000 children with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year. They join a national Down syndrome population of about 400,000 persons. But that population may soon dwindle. And the reason why it may decline illustrates, in a vivid way, a struggle within the American soul. That struggle will shape the character of our society in the decades to come. Prenatal testing can now detect up to 95 percent of pregnancies with a strong risk of Down syndrome. The tests aren t conclusive. They can t give a firm yes or no. But they re pretty good. And the results of those tests are brutally practical. Studies show that more than 80 percent of unborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome now get terminated in the womb. They re killed because of a flaw in one of their chromosomes a flaw that s neither fatal nor contagious, but merely undesirable. Mass & Anointing of the Sick at Cathedral, Feb Do you know someone who is facing surgery, or an elderly person or child who is sick? You are encouraged to bring them to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Sat., Feb. 11, at 2:30 pm. Through anointing, the grace of the Holy Spirit comforts and strengthens the soul of the sick person. The Mass and Anointing of the Sick are co-hosted by the Cathedral and the Western Association of the Order of Malta in observance of the 2012 World Day of the Sick. Archbishop Emeritus Cardinal Roger Mahony will preside at the Mass and anointing, which is being held on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes. Bishop Ed Clark will be the homilist. 4 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Together in Mission 2012 Be Imitators of Christ. - 1 Cor 11:1 Archbishop Gomez has sent a letter to past contributors to the Together in Mission campaign. If you receive this letter, please respond with a generous pledge to support the ministries, programs and services provided by the parishes and schools that receive these funds. This weekend we are providing additional information about this campaign that provides funds to 35 parishes and 52 schools that would find it difficult, if not impossible, to operate without them. On the weekends of February and February 18-19, we will conduct the in-pew solicitation process so that those who do not receive the mailing will have an opportunity to make their pledges. As each parish household prayerfully reflects on the amount of the pledge to be made to help these parishes and schools, please reflect on the following questions. Do I really believe that I have a duty to help others who are in need? Is what I give to the work of the Church enough to show how grateful I am for what God has given me? Do I appreciate how important every contribution to Together in Mission is to the people in the subsidized parishes and schools? Please pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you consider the above questions and give generously, according to what God has given to you. The Altar Care Ministry is in need of help! This will be a tremendous help in the work they do to help lift people up out of their difficult situations. Thank you to all of those volunteers who help on a monthly basis by collecting after Masses. Your dedication and kindness in reaching out is much appreciated. Together we can continue this effort in 2012 as in this tough economic climate, support is continually needed. Each school family will be creating their very own Station of the Cross. We are asking you to participate in this event by bringing in a variety of objects, artifacts, related to our suffering, our everyday work, and for the greater glory of God as we strive for the Kingdom of Heaven. 5 Ministry in Community Lighthouse Catholic Media Listen as You Drive or Exercise! We are proud to present a new evangelization opportunity here at St. Anastasia Church. Lighthouse Catholic Media offers a practical and effective program to help Catholics know their Faith, keep their Faith, and share their Faith! Whether in the car or at home, you can deepen your understanding of the Catholic Faith when you listen to inspiring talks given by some of the best Catholic speakers in the world. In the back of the Church, you will see a display offering inspiring and educational CD s. The CD s include explanations of our Catholic Faith, accounts of God s incredible mercy in the personal lives of Catholics, and practical information for living your faith. A donation of $3 per CD is recommended. Child protection efforts extend to coaches - The Catholic Youth Organization/Department of Catholic Schools coaches training program implemented in 2005 was created to insure the safety and wellbeing of elementary school children, and coaches, in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Its two-hour training session covering child protection laws and procedures as well as character and safety training is mandatory for archdiocesan paid and volunteer coaches. All of the 4,500 coaches affiliated with 216 Catholic elementary schools are expected to attend the training. Once again, St. A s Catholic school is sponsoring the Parish Ball and Silent Auction in support of our children. The event will be held on March 10, 2012 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Redondo Beach. We are asking our local and neighboring businesses and families to support our school by donating an item or service to the Silent Auction or becoming an Event Sponsor of our program.
