2 St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 26th, 2011 The Lord fed His people with the finest wheat and honey; their hunger was satisfied. Psalm 80:17 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Jesus is the Bread of Life. - God provided the Israelites with manna from heaven to sustain them during their journey through the desert. We are provided with a greater gift, the Eucharist. It is greater because Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. This means every time we receive Holy Communion we are nourished by Jesus so we can grow in faith and holiness of life. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The reading from Deuteronomy recalls that God provided the Israelites with manna to sustain them during their journey through the desert. The second reading reminds us that Jesus is truly and really present in the Eucharist. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that eating his body and drinking his blood are necessary for entering eternal life. FACT OF LIFE Freedom to Die? There is a move in our country and in the world to permit the terminally ill to end their lives through euthanasia. Some claim that it is the ultimate civil liberty to decide the time and manner of one s own death. Not one of us decided the time or manner in which we came into this world. Our life is a sacred gift from God, and only He can give it. It is therefore His right alone to take us out of this world. We do not possess a right to die. A right is a moral claim. We do not have a claim on death; rather, death has a claim on us! Some see the right to die as parallel to the right to life. In fact, however, they are opposite. The right to life is based on the fact that life is a gift which we do not possess as a piece of property (which we can purchase or sell or give away or destroy at will), but rather is an inviolable right. It can not be taken away by another or by the person him/herself. The right to die is based, rather, on the idea of life as a thing we possess and may discard when it no longer meets our satisfaction. Right to die thinking says there is such a thing as a life not worth living. For a Christian, however, life is worthy in and of itself. And not because it meets certain criteria that we or others set. (Fr. Frank A. Pavone, International Director, Priests for Life). MASS INTENTIONS Sun., 06/26 7:30 AM. ALEX ROQUE + 9:00 AM. 3 Body and Blood of Christ Ministries in Action June 26th, 2011 Body and Blood of Christ - The Scriptures today remind us that we, many though we are, are one body for we all partake of the one loaf. How are we using our gifts of time and talent to build up the Body of Christ? See 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Five Tips for Safeguarding Children The Archdiocese mandates that all people who work with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo child abuse prevention training through the VIRTUS program. The training details five steps to prevent child sexual abuse: 1. Know the warning signs of an inappropriate relationship with a child. 2. Control access to children by carefully selecting the adults who work with children and youth. 3. Monitor all programs for the safety of children and youth. 4. Be aware of and sensitive to what is going on in the lives of children. 5. Communicate concerns to the appropriate person in authority. For more information, please call the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office: (213) For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) Understanding Human Sexuality in a Catholic Context: A Summer Institute with Fr. Dear Parishioners, I want to wish all of you on this very beautiful feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) an abundance of God s blessings. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our life together, and we recall how much Jesus has loved us. I am away this Sunday. As many of you know, I am taking a week of vacation time to spend with my Dad in Rome. We are there to celebrate the conferral of the pallium to Archbishop Gomez. The pallium is a symbol of the unity between the Holy Father and the Archbishops of the world. It will be conferred on Archbishop Gomez on Wednesday, June 29, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, who are the Patrons of the City of Rome. Please know of my prayer and love for all of you as we visit all the holy places in Rome. I will be thinking of all of you especially at Mass while I am away. Devotedly, Fr. Gabe The Peter s Pence Collection will take place TODAY Sunday, June 26th. Cast the love of Christ upon the world. This collection provides the Holy Father with the assistance he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression and disasters. Through your generosity, with Pope Benedict we can cast the love of Christ upon the world. 4 Body and Blood of Christ Caring for Creation, Caring for the Poor June 26th, 2011 From the Music Director After today s Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi, its former name was and is much more simple to say) we will enter once again the long series of numbered Sundays of Ordinary Time. It will be important as we prepare during this season for the New Order of Mass for each of us to spend some time reflecting on the changes. There are many resources available online, but please check the bulletin each week for specific information relating to our worship here at St. Anastasia. As with anything new, it is exciting to look forward to, yet may have its own inherent challenges. The more prepared we are, the easier it will be to navigate. Let us pray for a renewal of our faith and worship. - Greg Koppenhaver FROM THE HOLY FATHER: LIFESTYLES MUST CHANGE FOR HUMAN FAMILY TO SURVIVE On Thursday, June 9, Pope Benedict XVI called for the development and implementation of clean energy technologies and advocated for a change in lifestyles which more fully care for Creation and protect human life and dignity. While welcoming six new ambassadors to the Holy See, Pope Benedict XVI shared thoughts about human ecology while considering the innumerable tragedies that have affected nature, technology, and the peoples and suggesting that the States should reflect together on the short term future of the planet, on our responsibilities regarding our life and technology. The Pope asserted that human ecology is an imperative. Adopting a lifestyle that respects our environment and supports the research and use of clean energies that preserve the patrimony of creation and that are safe for human beings should be given political and economic priority. The Holy Father also emphasized that in order to care for creation and protect humanity, individuals and society must undergo a change in mentality to quickly arrive at a global lifestyle that respects the covenant between humanity and nature, without which the human family risks disappearing. BAPTISM MINISTRY IN THE NEWS It is with great admiration and gratitude that we say farewell to Linda and Kevin McNally as our Baptism Ministry Coordinators. Linda and Kevin have been faithful stewards serving in this ministry for over 25 years! Of course, Linda and Kevin wanted no public recognition of this service and absolutely no special accolades. The McNally s have always acknowledged that many hands do God s work but we just couldn t let this one go bye. We as a parish are blessed to have couples such as Linda and Kevin who live as true disciples in their dedication to parish life. Living Faith for Kids How can this man give us his flesh to eat? John 6:52 Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Eucharist, the gift of Jesus Body and Blood given for the life of the world. How can this be? is a reasonable question, but it is a question that can be answered only by faith. When God wants to do something, it will happen. Another question comes to mind: Why would Jesus give us his Body and Blood? Though he has gone to the Father, through this gift he can be with us in a physical way. As our spiritual food, he can build us up, and we can become more like him. Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of yourself in the Eucharist. FEAST OF FAITH The Corpus Christi Procession In the thirteenth century, a Belgian nun by the name of Juliana had a vision: she saw the full moon silvery and radiant except for one dark spot. The meaning of the vision was revealed to her: the moon was the church s liturgical year, the dark spot a missing feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. Today s feast of Corpus Christi the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ grew from Juliana s vision. On this feast, many parishes observe the traditional Corpus Christi procession, giving honor to the Eucharist by carrying this greatest treasure out of the safety of our churches and into the streets. At the end of every Mass we are not just let out, we are sent forth, strengthened by the Eucharist, to be the Body of Christ in the world. The Corpus Christi procession is the dismissal writ large! We take Jesus with us, not only in our hearts, but carried in our midst and exposed in a monstrance. It is a public procession of faith and a blessing of the world. Jesus walks with us on these streets that we walk day after day, among those who know him but yearn to know him better, and among those who do not know him. The Eucharist is a mystery to be believed, to be celebrated and to be lived. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 26, 2011 Not by bread alone does one live, But by every word that comes forth From the mouth of the Lord.
