2 Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time: Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today's first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a "remnant" in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul's letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today's Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus' "Great Sermon." As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God's kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God's chosen "remnant." This Week: Saturday January 28th / Sunday January 29th, 2017 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: God s ways are not our ways. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today s readings make clear that God s ways are not the status quo. Each reading demonstrates God s glory in the most unlikely of people the weak, the humble, the lowly. Conventional wisdom is rendered moot by God. These readings challenge us to reflect on our own biases as to who is worthy and who is to be admired. Whose ideals are we striving to live by? The first reading explains that those who live by God s ways will be protected. In the second reading, Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that God used their lowliness to demonstrate Christ s glory. The Gospel shares the beatitudes given by Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount. Gospel -- You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. In your good deeds your light shines before others, leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). In late January the parish office will be sending out donation statements to parishioners or families who have donated $100 or more during This level of reporting exceeds IRS rules which require a written acknowledgement only for individual gifts of $250 or more, but we send the statements as a reminder to claim the deduction for those who itemize. Donations will be included in your annual donation statement if they meet one of the following criteria: (1) checks/cash are placed in the collection basket at one of the December or prior Masses, or (2) checks/cash not placed in a collection basket must be delivered or postmarked no later than December 31st, or (3) online contributions are processed no later than December 31st. Please be aware that a check placed in a collection basket at a Mass in January or received/ postmarked after December 31st will be included in the tax statement for the following year, even if the check is dated December 31st or prior. Childcare at 9:00 a.m. We are renewing our 9:00 am childcare program. We need volunteers to help with this endeavor. Childcare is available to all families, and there is no registration or fee. But someone always forgets, so today Courtney brought an extra blue T-shirt. She knows how it feels to be the person who doesn t fit in. Courtney is thinking about others. That s a little of what Jesus means by being poor in spirit. Instead of filling ourselves up with all we want, Jesus wants us to empty ourselves of selfishness and think about what we can give. 5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Come and See! St. Anastasia Catholic School's Production of Annie Jr. on Friday, Feb 3 at 7pm and Saturday, Feb 4 at 6pm. The vivacious cast of over 50 students perform this uplifting Tony award-winning musical about little orphan Annie who charms everyone s hearts in 1930's New York City. You will be treated to familiar favorite songs like Tomorrow, N.Y.C., and Hard-Knock Life. The performance is at El Segundo Performing Arts Center. This is highly ironic since many first wave feminists were adamantly against abortion, and in fact many of the anti-abortion laws overturned by Roe v. Wade were put in place by pro-life feminists in the 19th century. Rather than viewing abortion a tool of female empowerment, they viewed abortion as a sign of the oppression of women by men. Credited by many as the founder of the woman s rights movement, and herself the mother of 7 children, Elizabeth Stanton was clear that she considered abortion to be a form of infanticide, and therefore rejected it totally. She also blamed men for abortion, saying that it was a symptom of the oppression of women (rather than a sign of their empowerment!). In one newspaper article, she blasted the murder of children, either before or after birth, saying we believe the cause of all these abuses lies in the degradation of woman. Elsewhere she wrote: We are living today under a dynasty of force; the masculine element is everywhere overpowering the feminine, and crushing women and children alike beneath its feet. Let woman assert herself in all her native purity, dignity, and strength, and end this wholesale suffering and murder of helpless children.
