First Sunday of Lent: Today s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the promised land. Is my offering at today s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me? The season of Lent is HERE...LENT 2016 Lent began with Ash Wednesday, Wednesday, February 10th, this year. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. This Week: Saturday, February 13th / Sunday, February 14th First Sunday of Lent Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Everyone who calls in the name of the Lord will be saved. Throughout our Judeo-Christian history, people have cried out to God for help, and the Lord has protected us, provided for us, and helped us to grow into a mature relationship with Him. We know, as Jesus knows, that we are to call upon the Lord for help, but not to test Him, as the devil sometimes tempts us to do. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The reading from Deuteronomy is a reminder of God s fidelity to the Hebrew people, and their responsibility to offer the first fruits of their labors back to the Lord. In Romans, Paul teaches the people to confess that Jesus is Lord, and to be saved. In the Gospel of Luke, the devil tempts Jesus in the desert. The Holy Season of Lent is here please consider joining us for one or all of these opportunities. They are designed to help you think, ponder, reflect and consider and eventually perhaps to discuss about the meaning of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ for you! Wednesday(s) 5:30pm Mass followed by the Simple Soup in the Parish Hall. This Simple Sharing and Breaking Bread Supper will be Hosted by different ministries for four consecutive Wednesdays, it just began Ash Wednesday, February 10, WHAT IS SIMPLE SOUP? WHY DO WE DO IT? The Simple Soup Supper is an intergenerational fellowship that meets for a soup dinner after the Wednesday evening 5:30 PM Lenten Mass. Various ministries HOST this activity supplying the soups and bread. The Host group also assists with the clean up. There is a basket at each table for those who wish to donate. This is a free will offering. The money collected during the Lenten supper will be given to St. Margaret s Center. This year St. Anastasia Parish families will be asked to Host a Simple Soup on Wednesday, March 2nd. There will be sign-up sheet in the Courtyard for those who would like to participate. Host Ministries: Wed., Feb. 17th, Bible Study Wed., Feb. 24th, Lector Ministry Wed., Mar. 2nd, PARISH FAMILIES a way of life for St. Anastasia Church Tax Statements - Tax Statements detailing your donations for calendar year 2015 will be mailed no later than February 29, SOCIAL CLUB UPCOMING EVENTS Our annual Toast to the Saints luncheon is coming soon. We will be meeting in the Parish Hall (beneath the school) at 12 NN, Wed., March 16. We will again be serving corned beef (in honor of St Patrick) and lasagna (in honor of St Joseph). All parishioners and their guests are welcome. Come prepared to celebrate with the Irish and the Italians. The price is still $15. The deadline is March 7. We are now taking reservations for our spring three-day trip to Laughlin and the Riverside Hotel and Casino. We will be leaving at 9 AM on Mon., May 2nd and returning at 6 PM on Wed., May the 4th. The price is $102 pp double occupancy and $120 pp single occupancy, and will include two breakfast buffets, one buffet of choice, and all gratuities. Your reservation must be fully paid by March 21. 5 Ministry in Community During Lent there is a 5:30 pm Mass each Wednesday, followed by Simple Soup, for the first 4 consecutive Wednesdays ONLY!! Stations of the Cross on Fridays, at 7:30 pm. St. Joseph Center in Venice and the Cram/Mollett family would like to thank the St. Anastasia Parish Community for their generous donations in The 12 monthly collections totaled almost $6,400 in cash and approximately 120 bags of groceries and supplies. Many thanks for your kindness and giving hearts. It really made a difference in the lives of many! Pope Francis has a good recommendation in his 2016 Lenten message: In an ever-new miracle, Divine Mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbor and to devote ourselves to what the Church s Tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete, everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. In general, works of mercy are those charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbors in their bodily and spiritual needs, said Father of Mercy Wade Menezes, who is a frequent EWTN guest. They help address the person s personal life in such areas as faith, prayer, the reality of sin and forgiveness, embracing one s crosses, relationships and the reality of judgment and mercy, he continued. Luke 4:1 It s just a TV show, it won t hurt you You can t stay away from candy all through Lent, so you just quit now Temptation comes in all forms and sizes. Big or small, hidden or outright, temptation tries to draw you away from God s love and goodness. It might try to get you thinking you re too smart for God or that you re too sinful for God to love. Neither is true God s power and His love for you are beyond imagination. Just remember that when Jesus was tempted, He called on His Father for help. You can do the same. Loving God, fill me with your grace so I will remember to call on you when temptations come. Electronic dating violence is prevalent among teens Teenagers do a lot of communicating online and via mobile devices through social media and texting. Entire relationships can be shaped formed over the internet and messaging, and the private nature of these relationships may make it easy to hide signs of abuse and violence. Dating violence means any act of mental, emotional or physical aggression among a couple sharing an intimate relationship. Online, these acts are harder to pinpoint, especially for adult outsiders whose children may be victims of emotional dating abuse.
