This Week: Saturday, December 26th / Sunday, December 27th Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus Mary and Joseph Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Family Life is Holy. Members of a family are called to honor and respect each other. It s in our family where we first learn this way of holiness. Pope Saint John Paul II reminds us that the Holy Family is the prototype and example for all Christian families. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading from Sirach, the prophet speaks of the blessings for those who honor their parents. In Colossians, Paul urges that all be done in the name of Jesus, with love and thanksgiving, and that the word of Christ may dwell in us richly. Luke tells the story of Jesus being lost and then found by His parents in the Temple. WE ENCOURAGE ALL TO READ AND REFLECT ON THE BIBLICAL PASSAGES THAT WILL BE PROCLAIMED AT ALL THE MASSES First Reading Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel Magi from the east arrived, saying, Where is the newborn king of the Jews? (Matthew 2:1-12). Volunteers Needed to Visit The Sick at Cedars Sinai Hospital In his bulletin regarding the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis wrote, It is my burning desire that during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy...jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. (Misericordiae Vultus #15). Come share 2 to 4 hours per week with our many Catholic patients as a volunteer Catholic Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister in this corporal work of mercy. You will find this ministry spiritually enriching. We provide an extensive training program that will help you with your patient visits. Please contact Fr. 4 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Annual Tax Statement Information!! Following IRS rules, contributions will be included in your annual tax statement for 2015 if they meet one of the following criteria: (1) checks/cash are placed in the collection basket at one of the December or prior Masses, or (2) checks/cash not placed in a collection basket must be hand delivered or postmarked no later than Dec. 31 st, or (3) online contributions must be processed no later than Dec. 31 st. Please be aware that a check placed in a collection basket at a Mass in January or received/postmarked after December 31 st will be included in the tax statement for 2016, even if the check is dated December 31 st or prior. Spend the New Year with the Traveling Holy Family! Send an to regina@st-anastasia.org to request time with the Holy Family statues starting in January 2016! You can request the statue to reside with your family for a period of 1-4 weeks at a time. Please note that the statue can be picked up by a family during a short but faith-filled blessing by the Priest during Sunday Mass with advance notice, or the statues can be dropped off and picked up from the Rectory. Take a time out to communicate Sometimes, kids need a place to go where they can say what they want, and they won t be immediately punished or have to deal with a negative reaction. It s important to make sure your child has such a space or time after dinner conversations, an ice cream spot, riding home from school where they can tell you what s on their mind, good or bad, and you can just listen and discuss, without taking the instant parental approach. If your children feel safe talking to you openly, you are better equipped to notice and handle any red flags in their lives. Ministry in Community FACT OF LIFE Our Lady of Guadalupe: A light for Human Dignity in the Face of the Culture of Death In December we celebrate the feast of Our Lady Of Guadalupe. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen writes eloquently about the vision which appeared on Juan Diego s tilma, where Mary s head is bowed in prayer and humility. What gives us such dignity and importance? Only the grace of God. Mary's head is not turned by her glory; in fact it is bowed in prayer. She knows that all her importance derives from her Son, that all her virtues are only the fruit of His grace. We only fully retain our dignity when we unite our will with God's, and obey His plan for us. It is perfect obedience to the promptings of grace, not power, learning, or knowledge, that elevates a person. When we try like Satan to rise against God's will, we degrade ourselves as our culture today has diminished the sanctity of life and the value of self-sacrifice, pretending to elevate man while in fact reducing him to the level of just one more primate. Kids Living Faith: Sunday, December 27th, 2015 Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety. And Jesus said to them, Why are you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my father s house? Luke 2:48-49 Usually when we think of Jesus, we think of Him as an adult. But Jesus was a child first, just like you. He had to learn to walk and talk and obey His parents. He did have a special relationship with the Father, but he didn t always know where it would lead Him. You probably don't know yet where God is leading you either. That s okay! It s enough for you to listen for God s call. You do this by spending time with God in prayer, just like Jesus did. Lord Jesus, help me open my heart to the Father, as you did.
