Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: The U.S. bishops pastoral on stewardship reinforces today s reading from 1 Corinthians: Because its individual members do collectively make up the Body of Christ, that body s health and well-being are the responsibility of the members the personal responsibility of each one of us. We all are stewards of the Church. The season of Lent is approaching...lent 2016 Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which falls on Wednesday, February 10th, this year. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. This Week: Saturday, January 23rd/ Sunday, January 24th Third Sunday In Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: We are called to use the unique gifts and talents that God has given us to further the work and mission of the Church. Today s reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians reminds us that, by virtue of our baptism, we are members of Christ s Body. We have a sacred duty and solemn obligation to use the unique gifts and talents God has given us to further the work and mission of the Church. Mindful of this, let us share our gifts generously so many others might come to know Jesus. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading tells of how those Israelites who returned from exile in Babylon to live in Jerusalem joined together in renewing their commitment to be faithful to God and His commandments. The second reading reminds us that we are parts and members of the one Body of Christ. Today s Gospel recalls the beginnings of Jesus public ministry. Gospel When Jesus claims his salvific mission is for all people, not just the Jews, he is expelled by the enraged members of the Nazarean synagogue (Luke 4:21-30). All meals and accommodations, including overnight supplies will be provided. The men s retreat will be held on February 5-6; the women s retreat on February 19-20, both on the St. Monica campus at 725 California Avenue in Santa Monica. There is no cost to attend, however we encourage donations of any amount to help defray expenses.

If you have lost a loved one and would like some support, please join us in the Rectory Conference Room on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9 pm. Facilitated by *Susan McLaughlin, MSW. Some topics we will explore are: What is grief and what to expect; Multiple losses and their effect on us; Prolonged and hidden grief; Cultural norms against grieving and how to deal with them; The need for support and how to get it; Grief and God. You can request a statue to reside with your family for a period of 1-4 weeks. The statues can be picked up by the receiving family during a short but faith-filled blessing by the Presider during Sunday Mass with advance notice, or the statues can be dropped off and picked up from the Rectory. SIMPLE SOUP - Stewardship in action Save the Date! As we approach the Holy Season of Lent, please consider joining us for one or all of these opportunities. They are designed to help you think, ponder, reflect and consider and eventually perhaps to discuss about the meaning of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ for you! Wednesday(s) 5:30pm Mass followed by the Simple Soup in the Parish Hall. This Simple Sharing and Breaking Bread Supper will be Hosted by different ministries for four consecutive Wednesdays beginning Ash Wednesday, February 10, WHAT IS SIMPLE SOUP? WHY DO WE DO IT? The Simple Soup Supper is an intergenerational fellowship that meets for a soup dinner after the Wednesday evening 5:30 PM Lenten Mass. Various ministries HOST this activity supplying the soups and bread. The Host group also assists with the clean up. There is a basket at each table for those who wish to donate. This is a free will offering. The money collected during the Lenten supper will be given to St. Margaret s Center. This year St. Anastasia Parish families will be asked to Host a Simple Soup on Wednesday, March 2nd. There will be sign-up sheet in the Courtyard for those who would like to participate. FACT OF LIFE Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade Never Had an Abortion, Her Daughter is 46. Forty-three years ago, abortion became legal in our country. But the woman, Norma Corvey, whose case came before the Supreme Court, had her baby. Norma Corvey is now an outspoken pro-life convert to the Catholic Faith. Norma Corvey is Jane Roe. She claimed all those years ago that her pregnancy was the result of a rape, admitting that this, and virtually every fact on which her case was built, was a lie. Both Mc Corvey and Sandra Cano, the Doe of Doe v. Bolton -Roe s companion case from Georgia-are now pro-life advocates who have sworn their cases were built on lies. Now, over 55 million Americans have lost their lives because of a decision based on lies. Dear Lord, Lead our nation and our world from the Culture of Death, into the light of the truth. Kids Living Faith: Sunday, January 24th, 2016 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, I do not need you, nor again the head to the feet, I do not need you. 1 Cor 12:20-21 There will never be another person quite like you. But that s true for everybody else too! We all have our own talents and gifts. They enable us to do good things for others. And others have talents and gifts that enable them to do good things for us. That s why we need one another, just like the eye needs the hand, and the head needs the feet. Lord, help me respond to other people s needs. May I be grateful when they respond to mine. And my I see that none of us is complete without the help and friendship of others. Ministry in Community PALMS: We are collecting palms for Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 9th. Box in the Vestibule. The Burning of the Palms service takes place on Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 9th, at 11:45 am in the School grounds. All are welcome! Wednesday, February 10th, is Ash Wednesday. Lent Begins! Masses will be as follows: (Ashes will be administered) 6:30, 8, & 11 am, and 5:30 pm. Simple Soup to follow in the Basement for the first FOUR Wednesdays, after the 5:30 pm. Mass-to continue throughout Lent & Holy Week. Stations of the Cross on Fridays, at 7:30 pm. Setting boundaries fosters healthy relationships: We create boundaries to keep our lives in order, for example many adults separate personal and professional relationships. Trusted adults can help teach children to do the same. Boundaries are essential in the foundation of relationships, and children should be comfortable expressing where they draw their own lines. No means no is easy to say in theory, but it should be respected in practice by your kids and their friends, teachers and other adults. Teach your kids how to explore their own comfort zones and give them time to tell you about their experiences. Open communication helps them understand that setting boundaries is part of life.
