Second Sunday of Advent: God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low. -Baruch 5:7 Dear Parishioners --- "I pray always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the Gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus." These words from the Second Reading for this Second Sunday of Advent seem especially appropriate as I continue in my recovery. I am very grateful for your prayers. I am expecting to be discharged on December 3 from the Acute Rehab to continue my recovery at a nearby rectory in Los Angeles. This will allow me to be closer to my doctors. My program will now emphasize continuing physical therapy as an outpatient. The therapy has been extremely helpful. I have recovered about 90 % of the use of my left arm, and am steadily progressing with the work on my leg. I have been "getting the scoop" on all of you. Monsignor Vadakin, Monsignor Cox, Father Tom have been very good about giving me regular reports about what's going on!!! SO NO SHENANIGANS as we get ready for Christmas!!!! :) The second reading concludes: "And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ." 3 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Reflection on Today s Readings: Focus: Jesus will come in splendor. Advent is a time of anticipation. We look forward to the return of Christ in glory as we reflect on our lives, our spirituality and even our failings. Reconciliation and daily prayer are wonderful ways to prepare for the day of the Lord. Set aside the hustle and bustle; take some quiet time each day to focus on just what we have as believers. Liturgy of the Word: In today s readings, Baruch describes God s blessing on the city of Jerusalem, and Paul prays that all may be made ready for the day of the Lord. John the Baptist proclaims a baptism repentance which will prepare the people to listen to Jesus and to accept his ways in their hearts. Next Week - Celebrating Our Faith Sat. Ladies, you are invited to join our monthly women's faith sharing group. In order to help us come to a clearer understanding of our beautiful Catholic faith and straighten out popular misunderstandings and misinformation about the Catholic Church, we will be using the recently released book, The Seven Big Myths about the Catholic Church: Distinguishing Fact from Fiction about Catholicism by Dr. Christopher Kaczor. This book has been heartily endorsed by Archbishop Gomez and numerous other Catholic leaders. 4 Ministry in Community How does the Year of Faith affect the average Catholic? Every baptized Catholic is called through baptism to be a disciple of Christ and proclaim the Gospel. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for each and every Catholic to renew their baptismal call by living out the everyday moments of their lives with faith, hope and love. This everyday witness is necessary for proclaiming the Gospel to family, friends, neighbors and society. In order to witness to the Gospel, Catholics must be strengthened through celebrating weekly Sunday Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Tips for choosing safe toys for kids Millions of toys are out there, and hundreds of new ones hit the stores each year. Toys are supposed to be fun and are an important part of any child's development. But each year, scores of kids are treated in hospital emergency departments for toy-related injuries. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when toyshopping: Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant. Stuffed toys should be washable. Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint. Art materials should say nontoxic. Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they've been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Show your thanks for the senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who made a positive difference in so many lives. FACT OF LIFE I regret my abortion Another clear sign of progress is the wave of women across the world who are speaking out about how (they regret having abortions.) The Silent No More Awareness Campaign a joint project of Priests for Life and Anglicans for Life provides these women and men an opportunity to share their testimonies in public gatherings, before the media, in pulpits, and in legislative hearings. As Jennifer O Neill, the campaign s National Celebrity Spokeswoman says, Experience trumps theory. These men and women are living testimony that abortion doesn t work. Instead of solving a problem, abortion creates more problems of its own. Best of all, there is nothing abortion advocates can do to stop this tidal wave. In fact, it puts them in quite a dilemma. For decades now they have been saying, Listen to the voices of women! Now, if they practice what they preach, they hear those women s voices repudiate the lie of abortion. No more arguments Another sign of victory is that the other side has run out of arguments. In the years leading up to Roe vs. Wade, abortion advocates assured everyone that legalized abortion would reduce child abuse, strengthen family life, and improve society. But all the evidence shows that after three decades of legal abortion, all these problems have gotten worse. Moreover, all the arguments from medicine, science, psychology, sociology, law, ethics, and religion support the pro-life view. Finally, supporters used to call abortion a decision between a woman and her doctor. Now they say it s a decision between a woman and her God. When abortion supporters run out of arguments, they appeal to God in order to end debate. We in the pro-life movement also appeal to God... not as the substitute for other arguments, however, but rather as their foundation. Fr. Frank Pavone, Priests for Life.

Living Faith for Kids I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus Philippians 1:6 St. Paul was a master at encouraging the Christians he was teaching about the faith. In this simple sentence, Paul says something very important: God begins the work of faith, and God is not finished with us. When we pray, go to Mass and confession, we are doing what we can to grow stronger in faith but in all things, we rely on God to complete his work in us.
