2 St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California 20th Sunday in ordinary time August 14th, 2011 God, our protector, keep us in mind; always give strength to your people. For if we can be with you even one day, it is better than a thousand without you. - Psalm 83:10-11 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Through Christ, God s promise of salvation reaches beyond the Israelites to include all people of faith - The salvation won by Jesus Christ does not negate the covenant relationship between God and the Jewish people. That relationship is not broken; rather, it is broken open to include all people. Through Jesus, all those who accept the gift of faith are incorporated into God s covenant relationship with His people. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the passage from Isaiah, the faithful are reminded that God is working to bring about the salvation of all people. In the second reading, Paul tells the Romans that their faithfulness may be used by God to bring salvation to others. In the Gospel, Jesus grants the request of a Gentile woman and heals her daughter. FACT OF LIFE Participate in the Love of God. There is an intrinsic link between human love and human life. In the Sacrament of Marriage, the Lord anoints a couple s love with His presence. Their mutual gift of self in the marital act is an image of the exchange of love that takes place in the communion of the Blessed Trinity. As the Father gives Himself totally to the Son, and the Son receives His love and responds with His own, the love between them is the Third Person, the Holy Spirit. So too with a man and his wife; in giving himself totally to his wife, the wife receives her husband and responds with the totality of her being, and the fruit of their exchange? A third person a baby! Married love participates in the very love of God. God is with the couple in that moment of fruitful union, blessing them with marriage-sustaining grace and bonding them together in His love. It is here, within this context of love, in the embrace not only of his or her parents but of God, that a new human life is meant to have his or her first experience of existence. It is through and in our bodies that the Lord desires to continue His work of creation: bringing into existence a unique someone who did not exist and yet will now be forever. We are sacred! Sisters of Life, World Youth Day Blog, Prayer for Life: Heavenly Father, Give us boldness to share the Good News with those at the crossroads. May they choose life for their children and enjoy newness of life in You. Because of Christ we pray, Amen. MASS INTENTIONS Sun., 08/14 7:30 AM. SHAY FITZGERALD + 9:00 AM. SAMUEL MONTOYA 10:30 AM. Masses will be as usual: 6:30 and 8 am. On this day we celebrate our belief that at the end of her life, Mary was taken body and soul into heaven where she now lives in the glory of God with all the angels and saints. We can only imagine what it will be like to have a glorified body as Mary does, but we hope that at the resurrection of the dead, we will know firsthand. As we celebrate Mary s Assumption today, we look forward in hope to joining the banquet in heaven some day. Hail May, full of grace Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

3 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action august 14th, th Sunday of Ordinary Time - In today s second reading, St. Paul tells the Romans, God s gifts and His call are irrevocable. To what is God calling me today? What gifts are mine to share? See Romans 11:29 Listen to Your Children - This summer, when your children are out of school, on different schedules, are meeting new people and going to new places, make sure that you talk to them often about their experiences and the people they ve met. Listen carefully to your children. If possible, observe and get to know the other children and adults who are part of your children s summertime fun. Above all, communicate your safety concerns to your children. Make sure they know that they can come to you with any concerns they may have about the people they interact with. And, if you hear of or observe behaviors that may be inappropriate, make sure to communicate your feelings to people who are in a position to intervene. Communication is key to creating and maintaining a safe environment all year round. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) St. Anastasia Social Events Group - Parishioners, and family and friends of parishioners, the Social Events committee has put together another year of exciting and fun-filled excursions to please, entertain and even educate! To kick-off the new season, come to the September 14th meeting at Noon and hear an informative presentation by Anthony Ramos, LAPD office, regarding crime in the area, the difference between an emergency and non-emergency and what to do, how to contact the police and much more. Importantly too, you can sign-up early for the upcoming events Remember early payment assures best seating on the bus. Want a hint? How about Christmas on the Queen Mary! Bring your lunch to the meeting we will provide the drinks and dessert. RCIA Are You Interested In Becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is our greatest joy, as well as our Mission as a Catholic community, to welcome new members. The RCIA is a process of formation and education for those interested in learning about and experiencing the Catholic faith. The process is designed for those baptized in other Christian traditions, baptized Catholics who never received the Sacrament of Eucharist, some who have been away from our faith, or anyone interested in our Catholic faith. It is a faith journey that encourages individuals to broaden and deepen their prayer life, to know God through the Scriptures, to come to know themselves more and to participate more in the parish life. For questions or info, please call Jonette Mauch at Dear Parishioners, Four students from our Parish School - four young women - Kendall, Annika, Sara & Matiana - have filled our Parish with lots of hope. They are members of the Westchester/Playa del Rey Little League, and they are headed to Portland this week to take part in the Little League World Series! We are so proud of them and wish them luck. In times like ours, it is wonderful to see enthusiastic young people like our girls; playing like champs and giving us all a positive example of how all of us can inspire others to greatness - even by playing Baseball. Good Luck, girls! You are in our prayers. Devotedly, Fr. Gabe Welcoming the New Roman Missal, Third Edition Words of the Week - Some of the words used in the new translation of the Mass may be unfamiliar to some Catholics. Each week we will provide the definitions of some key words which may help to increase your understanding of the rich theology that underlies these texts. Definitions are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition. Clemency - The loving kindness, compassion, or mercy that God shows to sinners. Communion: Our fellowship and union with Jesus and other baptized Christians in the Church, which has its source and summit in the celebration of the Eucharist. By receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, we are united to Him and one another as members of His Body. Consecration: The dedication of a thing or person to divine service by a prayer or blessing. In the Mass, consecration also refers to the words spoken by the priest whereby the bread and wine are transformed into the risen Body and Blood of Jesus. (...will continue in the following weeks ) SRE FIRST EUCHARIST FAMILIES PLEASE PICK UP YOUR DVD AND YOUR BANNERS IN THE RECTORY! My House Should Be Called A House Of Prayer For All People St. A s Bible Study - We are currently on break for the summer. We will resume our study of the Gospel of Matthew on September 6th. If you would like to join us in the fall, please call Susan Senia at or at smsenia@gmail.com.

4 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Caring for Creation, Caring for the Poor August 14th, 2011 From the Music Director Some of the most significant changes to the people's parts in the Order of Mass are found in the Profession of Faith (The Nicene Creed). Changes to this text fall into two categories: preservation of the syntax of the original text and preservation of expressions of faith that contain Catholic doctrine. The first change is the translation of Credo as "I" instead of "We" in the opening phrase in order to maintain the person and number indicated in the Latin text. While the Profession of Faith is a communal liturgical act, each individual in the liturgical assembly professes his or her own faith, which is joined to the profession of the whole assembly. The second change concerns the translation of particular expressions of faith such as unigenitus, consubstantialis, and incarnatus. The theological terminology has been preserved, in accord with Liturgiam Authenitcam, in the translation to English: "Only Begotten," "consubstantial," and "incarnate." - Greg Koppenhaver TRAVELING HOLY FAMILY SCHEDULE Attention All Parishioners: The Holy Family offers each of us a chance to experience the beauty and serenity of the "Domestic Church" in our very own homes. If you would like to be added to or removed from the list of people to host our Holy Family, please contact Suzette Sornborger at x51, or 4suz@sbcglobal.net. Thank you!
