2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... October 8th, 2017, 27th Sunday In Ordinary Time: In the Gospel today, the owner of the vineyard sent messengers to collect his share of the harvest from the tenant farmers, but there was not a single good steward on the property! God is the owner, we are the tenants. What sort of stewards are we? BEARING THE RIGHT KIND OF FRUIT - Today's readings focus our attention on vineyards. Isaiah's song concerning his friend's vineyard begins with inspiring and poetic images of an idyllic vineyard where the choicest harvest is expected. Instead, the vineyard yields wild grapes, which causes the owner to abandon it. The psalmist cries out to God, asking that God once again take care of the vineyard, which is the house of Israel. The parable told in today's Gospel offers a stern warning that those who commit treachery in the hopes of attaining personal wealth will be "put... to a wretched death" (Matthew 21:41). Jesus warns his listeners not to act like the murderous tenants in the vineyard. Instead he exhorts them to produce the kind of fruit that will lead them to the kingdom of God. Copyright (c) J. S. 3 This Week: Saturday, October 7th / Sunday, October 8th, 2017 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: The God of peace is with us. By God s grace, modern medicine and science have made great strides in helping people deal with anxiety. Today, we are encouraged to know that being grounded in a good prayer life can also go a long way toward lessening the anxieties that disrupt the quiet of our hearts. LITURGY OF THE WORD Isaiah uses the beautiful image of the vineyard in describing the people of Israel. It takes work to have a good harvest, just as it takes work to remain faithful to the Lord. In the second reading, Saint Paul encourages us to turn our anxieties over to the God of peace. In the Gospel, Jesus also uses the image of the vineyard, saying that the vineyard the kingdom of God is for those who will produce its fruit. CELEBRATION OF HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS TODAY, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2017 It is with great pleasure, that the Office of Health Affairs of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Mission Doctors Association welcome you to a Mass celebrating the ministry of doctors, nurses and all involved in the care of the sick and infirm of the Archdiocese. The main celebrant at this Mass will be Most Rev. Gerald Wilkerson, D.D., Bishop Emeritus of the San Fernando Pastoral Region. It will take place at the CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS 555 West Temple Street Los Angeles, CA Sunday, October 8, 2017, at 3:30 p.m. The Mass will be followed by a reception in the Cathedral Conference Center affording us an opportunity to say a public thank you to our Healthcare Personnel for their caring commitment to the sick and needy in the Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, and on our Missions both in the US and in many parts of the world. This time we will visit St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church and take a docent tour of Skirball Center, with a lunch stop at Westside Pavilion. We will board the bus at 8:45 AM on Thursday, October 12 and return to the church about 4:45 PM. The cost is $25 and includes the cost of the bus and all gratuities. Vigil in Honor of Our Lady of Fatima at LA Cathedral October 13, 2017 Come to Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral to commemorate the 100-year apparitions of our Lady of Fatima. The whole family is invited. This is a good opportunity to reflect and pray for world peace, reconciliation and those in need. The vigil will be from 6 pm to 9 pm. There will be a small procession, worship songs, Marian songs, rosary and a short reflection of 5th Encuentro. The vigil will be bilingual, English and Spanish, with the participation of various members of our Catholic community. This is vigil is sponsored by the Office of Religious Education, the V Encuentro Initiative, and Nueva Creacion de Dios Ministry. There is no cost for the event; however, there might be a parking fee at the LA Cathedral. It also brings up a puzzling question: How is it that people so endearing could find themselves so completely rejected as members of the human family? It took a concerted effort, with government and culture working hard together, to achieve Iceland s feat a feat that the rest of the world is approaching. Other countries in Europe show abortion rates for Down syndrome of more than 90 percent. In the U.S., the rate of termination of babies diagnosed with Down s is 67 percent and rising. On the government side, expensive genetic tests are included in routine prenatal care with a clear predisposition to abortion if a disability is detected. This is something Icelandic geneticist Kari Stefansson describes as heavyhanded genetic counseling. On the cultural side is a rising inability to imagine that a life burdened with disability can still be filled with the simple everyday satisfactions the abled experience. This lack of imagination inspires a fear of the other and what seem insurmountable difficulties resulting in the inability to welcome, include and accept.

5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Fall Film Study Our Fall Film Study begins this Thursday, October 12 th, and continues through the 19 th and 26 th in the School Library at 7:30 PM. We will be viewing and discussing the 2016 film A United Kingdom. This film is based on the true story of the black crown prince of Botswana who married a white Englishwoman in the late 1940 s. As one might expect, neither the Africans nor the British were happy with this arrangement. It is a powerful story of love and hope in a difficult time and place. We look forward to three evenings of an enjoyable film and interesting discussion. God, keep me close to you as I grow up and change! The St. Anastasia Children's Choir is about to begin it's 2017/2018 season. All children, grades 1-4 are welcome to join! Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 pm to 4 pm and the choir sings twice a month at the 9 am Mass. We will also sing on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday.
