This Week: Saturday, December 27th / Sunday, December 28th Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Reflections on Today s Readings FOCUS: Christian families are to imitate the example of the Holy Family by striving to live in love and unity with God and one another. Joseph and Mary loved God and did their best to be obedient to all God asked them to do. They lovingly cared for the Child Jesus, brought Him up to walk in the ways of the Lord, and live in love and unity with God and one another. Their life together as a family was marked by holiness and love, and it is the example after which all Christian families are to pattern their lives. LITURGY OF TH WORD: The first reading from the Book of Sirach highlights the importance of loving and honoring one s parents, and the blessings that flow from it. The second reading exhorts us, as brothers and sisters in the Lord, to lovingly bear with and forgive one another. In Saint Luke s Gospel, Joseph and Mary take the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to be presented and consecrated to the Lord. First Reading Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The Lord shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading The Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (phesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel Magi from the east arrived, looking for the newborn king of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12). Living Faith For Kids Put on then, as God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another ; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. ~ Colossians 3:12-13 St. Paul is writing to the Colossians, but he is talking directly to you and me too. He is talking about how we ought to behave as Christians, and it is great advice for families. We all like to be forgiven and treated with compassion, but are we willing to do the same for others, those nearest and dearest with whom we live? The more we live as St. Paul advises, the more we will enjoy the peace of Christ in our hearts. Try it, and you ll see!

These were named by the scientists who mapped the moon about 20 years after the Galileo trial. (as mentioned last week, Galileo remained a Catholic and his daughter became a nun.) Belief in God as the Creator is not an obstacle to science. Why should belief that the universe has a Creator stand in the way of science? Why should it in any way cause problems for science, if scientists understand their research, their discoveries and the theories they evolve, as studying the book of creation.? stated Cardinal Christoph Schonborn in Chance on Purpose. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who revels mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth.the humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the observer of all things, who made them what they are. CCC 159 W AR GOD S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and lizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of selfsurrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Shopping mall safety tips - It s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us at holiday time. It is especially important to monitor your children when taking them through the mall during the Christmas season. If children become separated from you, teach them to look for a safe stranger who can help them. For example, a mom with kids or the cash register person can help a child who is lost. Avoid telling children to go to the manager. Any adult in a suit, who looks important, can look like the manager to a child. Children must be told never to leave the mall or store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited -- no matter what anyone else tells them.

Luke 2:30-31 TRASURS FROM OUR TRADITION: In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today s. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in urope made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today s feast was invented in In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life in the Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in prayer.
