Fifth Sunday of Lent - When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Lazarus, He responded, This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for God s glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified. Every aspect of our lives our gifts as well as our sufferings can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for others and ourselves. John 11:4 Dear Parishioners, On this 5th Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading is about the Raising of Lazarus. The compassion of Jesus shines forth, so that He raises His friend, the one that He loved so much, from the dead. This Lent invites us to consider the love of Jesus for us, and that He has the power to raise us from our present fears, from our burdens, from our hurts or shame. He can raise us up to a new level of hope so that we exist for Him as His disciples. Our Church this year is utilizing the option of having the images covered. In some ways the dramatic nature of having the images shrouded hopefully assists us to focus our attention on the mercy of God as we quickly approach Holy Week. Blessing to you all. This Week: Saturday, March 21st/Sunday, March 22nd Fifth Sunday of Lent Reflections on Today s Readings: LIFE FROM DEATH Lent is about Easter, and Easter is about life after death. As we draw closer to Easter, the Sunday readings become more and more explicit about this. In a rather dry, matter-of-fact way, today s reading from St. Paul s Letter to the Romans teaches that our mortal bodies will be raised to life. But in a far more gripping way, the Lord shouts at us through the prophet Ezekiel, O my people, I will open your graves... I will put my spirit in you... I have promised, and I will do it. When Jesus saw the people weeping over the death of Lazarus, he was troubled in spirit and moved by the deepest emotions. Approaching the tomb, Jesus himself began to weep. He loved Lazarus. In fact, Jesus loved Lazarus so much that he snatched him out of his tomb, back to life. That s how God loves us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 4 Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Children s Toy Drive This year Adrianna Hebert, Emily Holguin, Tami Garcias and Lexi Heath decided to propose a terrific Service Learning Project but we can t accomplish our goal without your assistance. We ve decided to sponsor a Children s Toy Drive to benefit both UCLA Mattel and CHLA hospitals. We hope to collect enough toys to be able to charitably give to those children that may not be as fortunate as us. In order to successfully make this happen, we need the support of our community, the parish, and Saint Anastasia. If you check out the flyer in St. A s website, you will see some of the selected items we are hoping to collect for those in need. If you decide to contribute to this effort, please be sure that the donated toys are New. Items may be dropped off at the school office. Thanks so much for considering our worthy cause! Tips to help protect children from sexting - Before buying your child a cell phone, set rules for its use, including what sort of information and images are appropriate to share via text. Know what safeguards are available on your child s phone, such as turning off and/or blocking texting and picture features. Talk to your child about the possible social, academic, and legal consequences of sexting. They could face humiliation, lose educational opportunities, and get in trouble with the law. Encourage your child to not be a bystander or an instigator. If he or she receives a sext, discuss why it is important that he or she not forward the image to anyone else. Remind your child that they can talk to you if they receive a nude picture on their cell phone. Report any nude or semi-nude images that your child receives to law enforcement or contact Are statues and crucifixes supposed to be veiled from the fifth Sunday of Lent until Good Friday? If the crucifixes aren't veiled, what is the point of having an unveiling on Good Friday? According to the Sacramentary, "The practice of covering crosses and images in the church may be observed, if the episcopal conference decides. The crosses are to be covered until the end of the celebration of the Lord's passion on Good Friday. Images are to remain covered until the beginning of the Easter vigil." This statement allows the veiling of statues and crucifixes if the Episcopal conference votes in favor of the practice. In a 1995 issue of the Bishop's Committee on the Liturgy Newsletter (official publication for the liturgical committee of the United States), it was stated that the US bishops had never voted on this provision so in the United States at least, this practice is not to be done. The Sacramentary also states that following the Holy Thursday Mass "the altar is stripped and, if possible, the crosses are removed from the church. It is desirable to cover any crosses which remain in the church." In 1988 the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship issued Paschale Solemnitatis, a new document on the Easter feasts. According to this document, "It is fitting that any crosses in the church be covered with a red or purple veil, unless they have already been veiled on the Saturday before the fifth Sunday of Lent." (n. 57) This leaves the decision to cover the crucifixes in the church up to the individual parishes but strongly encourages this tradition. 5 2015 Lent began with Ash Wednesday. The Catholic Community around the world follows these gen regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.
