2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... October 15th, 2017, 28th Sunday In Ordinary Time: In today s second reading, St. Paul thanks the Philippians for being willing to share in his hardships and promises that God, in turn, will fully supply all their needs. Our God truly cannot be outdone in generosity! THE HEAVENLY BANQUET The mountain of the Lord described in today's first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us "RSVP" to God's invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 3 This Week: Saturday, October 14th / Sunday, October 15th, 2017 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: We must be prepared to heed God s loving call. Today s readings provide both comfort and challenge. We are reminded that God is gracious and merciful, forgiving our sins and providing for our needs. But we must actively listen for His call and heed it when it comes, lest we be unprepared to enter the heavenly kingdom and join in the eternal wedding feast. LITURGY OF THE WORD In the first reading, Isaiah celebrates the generous and merciful nature of God, who blesses His people with an abundance of good gifts and saves them form sin and death. In the second reading from Philippians, Saint Paul teaches that it is through our faith in Jesus that we draw strength. The Gospel parable finds a king inviting guests to his son s wedding banquet, only to realize that most are not fit to join the celebration. WE ENCOURAGE ALL TO READ AND REFLECT ON THE BIBLICAL PASSAGES THAT WILL BE PROCLAIMED AT ALL THE MASSES NEXT WEEK First Reading -- The LORD said to Cyrus, his anointed, "I am the LORD, there is no other" (Isaiah 45:1, 4-6). Psalm -- Give the Lord glory and honor (Psalm 96). Second Reading -- Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians: We thank God always for all of you (1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b). Gospel -- Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's (Matthew 22:15-21). We are inviting High School students to participate in our Youth Ministry Program. First meeting, Monday, October 16th, 6 to 7:30 pm, Parish Hall. All are welcome! There is a second collection being taken up today, to support victims of the recent natural disasters that have seriously affected life and conditions in different areas of the world. If you desire that your donation will benefit a specific area, please indicate it on the memo line of your check. This beautiful and meaningful event is all possible thanks to those who volunteer their time and talents! WE ARE IN REAL NEED OF COMMITTED PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THIS TRADITION! This is a beautiful opportunity to experience what Mary and Joseph may have felt as doors were closed in their faces, and then to experience the true joy of hospitality. FACT OF LIFE Canada Euthanizes 2,149 Patients During the First Year of Legalized Suicide Alex Schadenberg Oct. 9, 2017 (excertpted from lifenews.com The Canadian government established a selfreporting system, meaning the doctor who carries out the death is the same doctor who reports the death (no oversight of the law), therefore it is probable that under-reporting and abuse of the law occurs. Based on the first Quebec government euthanasia report, 14% of the assisted deaths did not comply with the law. To make matters worse, an Ontario judge extended euthanasia to non-terminal people. The euthanasia debate must go beyond theory and buzz words to focus on human reality. People usually ask for euthanasia when they are emotionally or psychologically distraught. These patients are being killed at their most vulnerable time. Many others feel they are a burden to their families. As Catholics, we must strive to promote the dignity of the most vulnerable among us. We must cherish those who are medically, mentally, and physically challenged. 5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith GOLF ANYONE??: The 22nd Annual St. Anastasia Golf Tournament will take place on THIS Monday, October 16, 2017, at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach and followed by our post-tournament awards and dinner at the Elks Club in Playa del Rey. This event has been an annual tradition of fun while raising money to support the school's programs. Help us reach our goal of raising more than $20,000. Golfers of all levels are welcome. Contact Chris Turkmany with any questions at World Mission Sunday Mission at the Heart of the Christian Faith, October 21/22, 2017 Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. Fall Film Study The Fall Film Study continues through Thursday, October 19 th and Thursday the 26 th in the School Library at 7:30 PM. We will be viewing and discussing the 2016 film A United Kingdom. This film is based on the true story of the black crown prince of Botswana who married a white Englishwoman in the late 1940 s. As one might expect, neither the Africans nor the British were happy with this arrangement. It is a powerful story of love and hope in a difficult time and place. We look forward to three evenings of an enjoyable film and interesting discussion. Except Josh. He has one bat that his Mom found at a garage sale. His glove is a hand-me-down from his cousin. But today, Josh made a spectacular catch at third with his old glove. And he hit two home runs with his garage sale bat. Some of the boys ask if they can try Josh s bat. After the game, Josh realizes that he doesn t need fancy new equipment. He already has everything her needs. Than you, God, for giving me exactly what I need, when I need it! The St. Anastasia Children's Choir is about to begin it's 2017/2018 season. All children, grades 1-4 are welcome to join! Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 pm to 4 pm and the choir sings twice a month at the 9 am Mass. We will also sing on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday. To join, please request and submit a registration form to the Director of Music Ministry, Chris Roque. Surrounded by glitter and good cheer amid myriad expectations and mixed memories we sometimes feel overwhelmed, lonely, left out or even a little humbug-ish. Whether you are approaching the season with fond memories and high hopes or you are dreading the stresses the season may bring, we invite you to journey with us to explore the myths of Christmas, the social and personal consequences of the holiday season, and the reality of Advent. Where: In the Parish Office Conference Room Contact: Sue McLaughlin for more information Beyond the myth of the bathing suit rule - In the past, child abuse prevention programs focused on teaching children and young people that their private body parts are those parts of the body covered by a bathing suit. Teaching the concept of total body safety has become the latest practice. It is important for children to understand that their entire body is private. Parents should be watchful of adults who might be grooming a child by constantly tickling, kissing or hugging them. It is important to listen to a child and respect their wishes if they do not want to hug or kiss someone.
