2 St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California 18th Sunday in ordinary time July 31st, 2011 God come to my help. Lord, quickly give me assistance. You are the one who helps me and sets me free: Lord, do not be long in coming. - Psalm 69:2,6 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: If we listen to Jesus and follow His teachings our hearts will be fed and we will come to have eternal life - The promise of abundance told by the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled by Jesus, as He fed the hungry people. He continues to feed the hunger of our hearts through the Eucharist. The Eucharist Meal we share today brings us closer to Jesus and is a foretaste of the eternal banquet we are to share in heaven. Let us give thanks. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah proclaims a message of hope. God will renew the Israelites if they turn to Him and walk in His ways. In the second reading, we are reminded that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus feeds five thousand men, not counting women and children. He did this with only five loaves and two fish. FACT OF LIFE Pregnancy is Not a Disease I strongly oppose the Institute of Medicine s recommendation today that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate coverage of three particular practices in almost all private health plans: surgical sterilization; all FDA-approved birth control (including the IUD, morning-after pills, and the abortion-inducing drug Ella); and education and counseling promoting these among all women of reproductive capacity. Pregnancy is not a disease, and fertility is not a pathological condition to be suppressed by any means technically possible. The IOM report claims it would have good reason to recommend mandatory coverage for surgical abortions as well, if such a mandate were not prevented by law.... Without sufficient legal protection for rights of conscience, such a mandate would force all men, women and children to carry health coverage that violates the deeply-held moral and religious convictions of many. This new threat to conscience makes it especially critical for Congress to pass the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act... (HR 1179). 3 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action July 31st, th Sunday of Ordinary Time - In today s Gospel, Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The message of stewardship is that God s gifts, shared, will always be more than enough. CyberTipline Fights Internet Crimes Against Children -The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other government agencies all work together to fight Internet crimes against children. They ve established a CyberTipline, a reporting mechanism for cases of child sexual exploitation including child pornography, online enticement of children for sex acts, molestation of children outside the family, sex tourism of children, child victims of prostitution, and unsolicited obscene material sent to a child. Reports may be made 24 hours per day, seven days per week online at or by calling (800) Bullying Is a Form of Abuse - Did you know that bullying is a form of abuse, and therefore is forbidden in our Catholic schools? Bullying typically consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause victims to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion. Cyberbullying, which involves the use of the Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not tolerated in our Catholic schools. We are also relocating our Adeste program classroom and freshening it up. I hope you are all enjoying the Devotedly, Fr. Gabe Word of the Week - Some of the words used in the new translation of the Mass may be unfamiliar to some Catholics. Each week we will provide the definitions of some key words which may help to increase your understanding of the rich theology that underlies these texts. Definitions are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition. Abasement - The lowering of one of higher rank. Jesus abased himself in that, though he was God, he lowered himself and became a human being so that he might save us from our sins (see Phil 2:6-11). Adoption: In Baptism, the Holy Spirit transforms us into children of the Father, thereby making us his adopted sons and daughters in the likeness of his eternal Son (see Eph 1:3-6). In this way, the faithful are made partakers in the divine nature (cf. 2 Pt 1:4) by uniting them in a living union with the only Son, the Savior (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], no. 1129). In the Sacraments, we become the sons and daughters of God by adoption through Christ Jesus. Each household will have the opportunity to gather to pray, reflect and spend faith-filled time alone or together. Nourishing our Spirit of Faith and Community The Journey began in April 2008 St. Anastasia Church From the Music Director Will everyone have to use the new translation of the Roman Missal? Yes, the "typical edition" of the Roman Missal that Pope John Paul II gave to the Church is the only official text for the prayers to be used at the celebration of the Eucharist. Some Bishops' Conferences around the world have already completed their process of translation and are presently using this official text. Because there are so many countries with varying cultures yet speak the English language the process of translating the official text into English has taken longer.
