2 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: Today s responsorial psalm is the theme song of the good steward: Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. May I, too, stand ready to offer myself and my gifts in the service of God. Psalm 40 SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody s life not necessarily our own will be surprised for the better. Copyright J. S. This Week: Saturday, January 16th/ Sunday, January 17th Second Sunday In Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: God gives us each unique gifts and talents that we are to use to further the mission of the Church. Today s second reading from Corinthians reminds us that God has given each of us unique gifts which we are to use to help build up the kingdom of God on earth. Living this out requires ongoing prayer and discernment to identify our gifts and talents, and the resolve and determination to live in service to God and our neighbor. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading from Isaiah speaks of God s love for the people of Israel. The second reading from Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians speaks of the special gifts, or charisms, which are given to the baptized for the sake of the Church. The Gospel recounts the first miracle of Jesus at the wedding feast in Cana. Gospel While attending worship in the Nazarean synagogue, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah and declares himself to be the fulfillment of the prophecy (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21). 4 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith TODAY, Sunday, January 17th is Bundle Sunday for our Parish. The St. Vincent de Paul Bundle Sunday truck will be here from 8 am to 1:30 pm to receive your donations. We need your support! Remember to bring any usable items that will help the needy. For large items including furniture, appliances, and vehicles, please phone or for home pickups. Remember your contributions will be helping the needy. Beginning Again Wrestling with Loss An educational and support group. If you have lost a loved one and would like some support, please join us in the Rectory Conference Room on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9 pm. Facilitated by *Susan McLaughlin, MSW. Some topics we will explore are: What is grief and what to expect; Multiple losses and their effect on us; Prolonged and hidden grief; Cultural norms against grieving and how to deal with them; The need for support and how to get it; Grief and God. FACT OF LIFE January 22 Day Of Prayer For The Legal Protection Of Unborn Children A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100* The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a throwaway culture. However, we have great trust in God s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children : In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Together in Mission 2016 Campaign TODAY is Announcement Weekend. And she has more friends than I ever will! Whenever Kate compared herself to her older sister, she ended up feeling like a loser. At least you like me, Kate muttered as her dog licked her hand. Kate needed to see that she was unique and that she even had a special way with dogs and other animals. Everyone has different abilities, talents and gifts. God made us that way on purpose. When you re tempted to compare, remember that the world needs your own unique qualities. God, thank you for all the ways I am unique.
