Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today's Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. 3 This Week: Saturday, November 4th / Sunday, November 5th, 2017 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Preach the Gospel and practice it. A good leader is not self-seeking, but always has the best interests of his followers at heart. A poor leader thinks only of himself and what he has to gain from his position of authority. Leaders have the power to guide their followers to destruction or prosperity. Jesus is the model servant-leader, humbling Himself and serving all. LITURGY OF THE WORD In the first reading, God sternly warns the priests that their behavior is leading his people astray, and that they must change their ways or risk his wrath. The second reading finds St. Paul giving thanks that the people to whom he preached have taken the word of God to heart and put it into practice. In the Gospel, Jesus warns the people not to follow their earthly leaders down the path to destruction, but instead to lead lives of humble service to one another. Think of three kindest people you know people who have helped you or someone else. Which people are really the greatest? Which list would you rather be on? You know the right answer. Jesus wants us to think differently about greatness. Jesus wants us to remember that love is always more important than being famous! Jesus, help me be great by putting other people first!
