JUNE, 26th, 2016, 13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: In today s second reading, St. Paul provides a wonderful one-sentence summary of Christian stewardship: Out of love, place yourselves at one another s service. The Tidings is becoming Angelus News Since 1895 The Tidings, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, has been telling the story of the Church in Los Angeles and across the globe. On July 1 The Tidings will be transformed and become a multimedia platform: Angelus News. The new presence will include a weekly magazine, a website (AngelusNews.com), social media channels and a daily digital newsletter. Pope Francis has shown us how to utilize the vast communications vehicles available to us, and Angelus will follow his lead. Look for more national and worldwide reporting, stunning photography and a new design that s attractive to all ages. As the largest archdiocese in the United States, we have a great story to tell. Our parishes and community of faith are the core of our story. And Angelus News will tell it well. We re bringing on new writers just wait and see the names but we re keeping the contributors you already love to read: Archbishop Gomez, Bishop Barron, Father Ronald Rolheiser and Heather King. We re proud of our past, but looking to the future. We re launching on July 1, the Feast of St. Junípero Serra. His motto was Always forward, never back. This Week: Saturday, June 25th / Sunday, June 26th Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Words are not enough when it comes to committing ourselves to the mission of Jesus. Jesus was hard on people who claimed they wanted to follow Him, but then gave excuses for putting off their commitment. What are we using as an excuse for not giving our all to and for Jesus? What will it mean to our way of life if we do give our all to and for Him? LITURGY OF THE WORD: In today s first reading, Elisha is called to succeed Elijah as prophet. He immediately kills his oxen and burns his plow in order to follow Elijah. The second reading from Galatians reminds us that Christ has set us free from the yoke of the law and slavery to sin. In the Gospel, Jesus rebukes would be followers for putting other needs and concerns ahead of His mission. Manchester Ave., LA, California WE ENCOURAGE ALL TO READ AND REFLECT ON THE BIBLICAL PASSAGES THAT WILL BE PROCLAIMED AT ALL THE MASSES First Reading Rejoice and be glad for I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of nations like an overflowing torrent (Isaiah 66:10-14c). Psalm Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66). Second Reading May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:14-18). Gospel Jesus sends his disciples out in pairs to bring his peace and proclaim the kingdom of God (Luke 10:1-12, 17-20) [1-9]. FOCUS ON THE MISSION There are so many things to do. We have so little time. How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniving, and worrying our way to gratify[ing] the desires of the flesh, as Paul relates in today s second reading, are really non-productive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah s chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later. Kids Living Faith: Sunday, June 26th, 2016 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time For you were called for freedom, brothers. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. Galatians 5:13 When we were little, our parents made most of our decisions for us: what we ate, what we wore, where we went. Starting with small decisions, we ve learned how to choose more for ourselves. As we grow, our families teach us to become more responsible and wise. We can choose to be selfish or selfless. Greedy or grateful. God gives His people the freedom to choose. Thankfully, He also gives us the wisdom to make good choices. God, thank you for my freedom. Guide me in my decisions so that I can grow in wisdom. Fact of Life Silver Lining at Iraqi Refugee Camp On May 28 at a refugee camp in Erbil, Iraq, the first of three rounds of displaced Iraqi children made their First communion. All of the children are from the Syriac-Catholic Rite, and most fled Qarqosh with their families when ISIS terrorists attacked on August 6, The First Communion Mass was celebrated in the camp's large prefabricated church, which began as a tent as the first Christian refugees asked for a place to pray. In the past two years, nearly 500 children have received their First communion at this camp, and four deacons have been ordained. The Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena have lead the children s catechesis. May God bless them all. 5 Ministry in Community On behalf of our entire St. Anastasia Parish Community, we want to thank Msgr. Vadakin for his leadership during this most difficult time following the death of Msgr. Gonzales. It s hard to know where to start when saying thank you! Msgr. Vadakin never hesitated for a moment to roll up his sleeves and get the job done. He has always been so generous with his time and talents for the people here at Saint Anastasia. He may never know how much we appreciate what he did for all of us. His kindness and steady vision to move forward have no doubt changed our lives. We thank him for his continued support and guidance. Because of him, we will continue to grow and flourish.
