2 SUN. 03/19 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT: The watchword today is immediately. Peter and Andrew, James and John all respond immediately to the call of Christ. May I be as open to God s call and as ready to use my talents in His service as those first disciples were! THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS - Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists' portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people's expectations about him or the ways of God. This "reversal" is at play in today's Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He--whose parched lips will say "I thirst" before he dies--is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 3 Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... This Week: Saturday, March 18th / Sunday, March 19th, 2017 Third Sunday of Lent FOCUS: Christ offers all people the living water of salvation. To those who thirst for truth in this world, our Christian faith offers the living waters of baptism and life in Christ. So many in our world are like the woman on the Gospel, isolated and afraid, often living on the fringes, looking for something or someone in whom to place their trust and faith. Let us pray they turn to Christ. Reflections on Today s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, fear and need cause Israel to grumble against Moses and the Lord. God responds with water flowing from the rock. The second reading reminds us that salvation is a gift, granted through the cross of Jesus. In the Gospel, Jesus encounters a broken woman at the well. His words renew and change her life. Symposium ~ Tuesday, March 21, 2017, 7:00 PM Prayer Hall at St. John s Seminary, 5012 Seminary Road, Camarillo, California About the Lecture: This lecture will encompass the life & work of Fr. Louis Bouyer, Cong. Orat. Bouyer was a convert from Lutheranism, an Oratorian Priest, a liturgist, a historian, an ecumenist, a writer on spirituality & monasticism, a theologian whose writings influenced Vatican Council II and in the aftermath he was not always too kind about the interpretation it often received. Along with Cardinal Ratzinger and others, he was a co-founder of the international review Communio. He was chosen by the pope to be part of a team to initiate the International Theological Commission in Fr. Giles had him as a student & will share some anecdotes from that experience, while he unpacks the recently published Memoirs of Bouyer. No admission charge, no reservations needed, but please let us know that you re coming by calling , x 1104 or ilng: advancement@stjohnse.edu Parents should be aware of laundry pod dangers - Risks to children s safety come in many shapes and sizes. As parents and caring adults, inappropriate adult conduct is not the only risk to watch for; we must also create safe environments to protect children from other risks. One possible threat comes from the small soft plastic pods that hold laundry detergent. The pods are brightly colored, and often attract young children who may mistake them for candy or other foods and according to studies, children who ingest these pods or been exposed to them could become ill and need to be hospitalized. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS article Detergent Pods from jvienna@la-archdiocese.org or (213) Kids Living Faith: Sunday, March 19th, 2017 Third Sunday of Lent But God proves His love for us in that while we re still sinners Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8 Matt loves baseball. You can name any position on any major league team, and Matt can tell you who the player is and his stats. Last year, his favorite team lost in the playoffs. But do you think that made Matt like baseball any less? Nope. He can t wait for the season to start. This year will be our year, he says. That s a little like God s love for us. Just because we mess up and sin, it doesn t mean God stops loving us. He knows we are trying hard. He s always cheering for us! God, thank you for loving me. I love you too and will do my best to show it!

5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith St. John s Seminary invites you to its Annual Open House for the public and Beacon event for young adults - St. John s Seminary, our Archdiocese s seminary for men pursuing their ordination, is holding its Annual Open House and a Beacon event for young adults. Both events are set for April 1; Open House from 1 to 4 pm; Beacon at 5 pm. During the Open House, guests will have the opportunity to tour the Seminary s beautiful grounds nestled in the hills of Camarillo, see the recently rededicated altar in its historic chapel, spend some time in our Lady of Lourdes grotto, and most importantly - get to meet seminarians who are studying to be priests for our parishes. The Beacon event gives young adults an evening with their peers in a faith-filled environment. The event offers Mass, dinner, praise and worship, reconciliation and Adoration. Both events are free. Guests are welcome to come to the Open House anytime from 1-4 pm. If you d like the Seminary to know you re attending, please call , x1104. Contact LENT 2017 Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which fell on Wed., March 1st, this year. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Third Sunday of Lent A Good Use for Cotton At this point His disciples came, they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman. - John 4:27 You are doing it all wrong! he says. You can t get anything right, she says. Thank God, we don t have any of their faults, they huff. We ve all encountered them the holier-than-thou, know-it-alls with their noses high in the air. The fault finders. While all of us are full of flaws, some people make their mission to keep score of ours while ignoring their own. With them always in our face, it s no wander we surrender so easily to distorted thinking and actually start believing we re not smart enough, good-looking enough, or competent enough. Stop listening to those who want to shoot you down with words like It s all your fault. Stuff your ears with cotton and move on. Think about how much better the world would be if only we all stopped trying to discover the wrong in each other and searched for what was good. There just wouldn't be any time left to worry about everyone s faults. We d find life much more pleasant and perhaps gain a few new friends along the way. Try to listen to see how many times throughout the week you hear people pointing out someone else s fault. Write out Jude, verse 16, on finding fault, and leave it on their desk. Prayer: Jesus, when someone is pointing their finger at me, help them to remember they have three more pointing back at themselves. Amen. Each Wednesday during Lent we have 6:30 & 8 am, and a 5:30 pm Mass. And Stations of the Cross on Fridays, at 7:30 pm. Each Wednesday, following the 5:30 evening Mass during Lent, and throughout the year, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, private prayer, and adoration will take place. We will also celebrate Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction. This prayerful liturgy will take place from 6 to 7 pm on all the Wednesdays of Lent and throughout the year. God bless you! FACT OF LIFE 40 Days for Life Update Two volunteers at the 40 Days for Life vigil in Pensacola spoke to a deeply troubled young woman who had conceived a child as the result of a sexual assault. She was hurting and felt that abortion was her only solution to the recent trauma she had experienced, said Ernie, the local coordinator. Counselors offered encouragement, assistance, prayers and tears. But still, she believed abortion was her only option and she went inside the abortion center. The volunteers kept praying and trusting in God. About an hour later, she came back out. When the staff was trying to start an IV, they could not find a vein. And because of that, she decided not to have the abortion. She took this as a sign from God that He does not want her to do this, Ernie explained. Later that same day, a second mother chose life for her child. What if no one had been there to speak with and pray for these two mothers? Ernie asked. The results may have been completely the opposite. Heavenly Father, we thank you for caring about each of us so deeply. Help us to see and know you as our Father in heaven each and every day of our lives. Your loving hand also rests on every child today carried in its mother s womb. May they be born into this world and come to know fully and personally your endless love. Still haven t been to the 40 Days for Life vigil? If not... why not this week? Contact Brother Alejandro Ramirez at You do not have to do anything but show up and pray peacefully. Lives are being saved every day. Be part of it.
