2 This Week: Saturday, June 30th, 2018 / Sunday, July 1st, 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Approaching Jesus with great faith allows him to be at work in our lives. Today we hear of the woman who had such faith that she wanted only to touch Jesus' cloak. Because of her faith, her brief encounter with Jesus was transformative in her life. It is her faith, and his divine power, that allowed her to be healed and changed. Jesus wants us to be healed as well let us approach him with great confidence and faith, knowing that he can transform our lives. LITURGY OF THE WORD In the first reading from the Book of Wisdom, we hear that God does not delight in death, but rather loves creation, and made us in his image. In Saint Paul's Letter to the Corinthians, Paul makes clear that we glorify God through our generosity. In Mark's Gospel, we hear about Jesus encounter with a suffering sick woman who simply wants to touch his cloak. Jesus affirms the woman not only by healing her, but also by telling her that it was indeed her faith that saved her. 3 Saint Sebastian Patron of athletes St. Sebastian's story begins when he joined the Roman Army in 283 AD, apparently to be of service to other Christians who were being persecuted by the Romans. Sebastian eventually was promoted to serve in the Praetorian Guard to protect Emperor Diocletian. While serving as a guard, Sebastian converted several prominent individuals and soldiers. This led to his discovery as a Christian. Emperor Diocletian ordered him to be killed by having him tied to a stake and used as target practice. Archers riddled his body with arrows. Believed to be dead, the archers left his body for burial. He was recovered by St. Irene who discovered that he was still living and nursed him back to health. How did Sebastian respond to being healed? He marched up to Diocletian and preached the Gospel to him! Sebastian was ordered to be martyred again! This time he was beaten to death with clubs. His body was found by another pious woman, who dreamed that Sebastian told her to bury his remains near the catacombs. Today his relics are believed to be in the Basilica of San Sebastiano on the Appian Way. His feast day is celebrated on January 20th. He is commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows. The artistic depiction of St Sebastian is considered symbolic of the virtues of strength, stamina, perseverance, courage and justice in the face of adversity. Imagine playing in one of the world cup soccer games today. Soccer is a universally loved sport, and like any sport played well, can teach us something about the beauty of human nature to encourage proper priorities, discipline, teamwork and cooperation. All of these characteristics are essential to the foundation of good, wellrounded individuals. Good coaching helps players understand the importance of priorities and adhering to them. These priorities are, in order, God, family, school, and your sport. Catholic education tradition has always recognized that education of the whole person; spiritual, intellectual, artistic and physical is necessary and vital. 4 Saint Anastasia was born in 281 A.D. and became a perfect symbol of peace, humanity, and solidarity. Her Feast Day is December 25th. She is a symbol of dialogue and collaboration. 5 Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith Did you Know - Educate children to identify risky behavior Recently, abuse against women has been thrust into the public spotlight, with the Me Too movement. It is important for parents/caregivers be aware of risks to girls and risks to boys. Boys and girls both need to be educated on what s acceptable and what s inappropriate, and how to react if someone does something that crosses the line. It is important for adults to reinforce the message that we must all look for, identify, and call attention to the risky behavior exhibited by any adult toward any child. He was on his way to do an important man s house. The woman didn t want to bother him, but she knew that Jesus could end her suffering. Then she had an idea. All she had to do was touch Jesus cloak. He wouldn t even have to stop! But of course, Jesus did stop. He spoke gently. Courage, daughter, he said. Your faith has saved you. Sometimes we don t want to bother Jesus with our problems. But Jesus is never too busy. He wants us to talk to him about everything. Jesus, please help me today with my special intention. THE RESULT OF FAITH As we grow in faith, we come to believe that God is always with us, through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit and the sacramental life of the Church, especially the Eucharist. We are assured of God's presence in quiet moments of prayer and experiences of the kindness, care, and compassion of others. We "see what we believe" through all of these encounters with Christ's love. These experiences lead us to praise and thank God for our many blessings, and to reach out to others so that, through us, they may also encounter Christ's undying love. Through all of this, we grow in our willingness to share our many gifts with others, especially the faith that makes such a difference in our lives. SOCIETY OF ST.
