As part of not only your Christ the King family, but of your own domestic, the following prayer can help us all to build stronger families each and every day. We bless your name, O Lord, for sending your own incarnate Son, to become part of a family, so that, as he lived its life, he would experience its worries and its joys. On the last day of His octave, we honor His Mother. There is much to contemplate on this day it's the day of Christ's naming, it's a day to pray for peace and it's the start of a new year of grace.* As the New Year begins, look at Mary as a model for renewed Christian life: in her openness to the Holy Spirit, her radical assent to God's will for her life, her patience through suffering, and her willingness to bring the Savior into the world. 6 Around the Diocese and Parish Neighborhood Celebration of Life Mass As we move into 2019, we cannot thank you enough for your support, concern, prayers, and often direct aid in our work to help the needy and disadvantaged of our community. Whether it is special collections, regular envelope donations, clothing and household goods drives, or help with special Veterans Day celebrations, our parishioners and friends have always responded with help and concern for the people we serve. Our Members have been greatly aided by your kindness and compassion for the poor and recognize that your help and generosity is an inspiration for them to continue their work. Above all, our joint prayers have always been answered whenever the needs seemed beyond our capacities. As we move into another year, we are confident your help will be there to support us in our work with the poor. Christ said, Ask and you shall receive. That has continually transferred your kindness to our program and meaningful help for those in need. We trust your generosity will continue and extend into this next year when our work with the disadvantaged and needy continues. Some of you might even consider joining our ranks as a Member of the SVDP Society in this next year. Let us join together in seeing the face of Christ in the poor and indigent among us. And let us continue to experience Christ working at our side throughout this coming year. DAMIEN A ONE-MAN PLAY BY ALDYTH MORRIS AN INSPIRATIONAL TRUE STORY Presented by Christ the King Council of the Knights of Columbus on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in the church, 1501 S. Main Street, Lombard. The star of the show is Wayne Messmer, known in Chicago as the renowned singer of the National Anthem at sporting events, but he is also recognized as an author (The Voice of Victory), broadcaster and actor. The play deals with the life of Father Joseph DeVeuster (Father Damien, the leper priest of Molokai) in Hawaii. Between 1873 and 1889, Father Damien dedicated his life to helping the lepers and making their time in seclusion more honorable and meaningful. He was canonized a Saint in October 11, The play is very powerful and moving, and Wayne Messmer becomes Father Damien for the audience. 7 The Differences Between the Baby in the Womb and the Newborn Baby There are four "differences" between the baby in the mother's womb (or so-called fetus) who has no protection under the law from a newborn baby, who is protected: 1. Size. The baby in the womb is usually smaller than newborns. The question, then, is what does size have to do with rights of personhood? The answer: nothing. 2. Level of development Babies in the womb are less developed than a newborn (unless the newborn is born prematurely). Again this has no moral significance. Children are generally less developed than adults and all human beings continue to develop and change throughout our entire lives. It is humanity, not brain capacity or strength that determines personhood. 3. Location. The baby in the womb has a different place of residence. Again this is irrelevant because personhood stems from being a human being, not from your location. 4. Dependency. Abortion protagonists love to argue that, "since a fetus cannot survive on its own, it has no inherent right to life". The problem with this argument is that to varying degrees, we are all dependent on others. Moreover, newborn babies and small children are absolutely dependent upon their parents for survival. What is absurd about this line of thinking is the fact that dependency should merit more protection under the law, not less! We are all far more outraged, for example, at violence towards children than at violence towards other adults. The reason is obvious. Children are more helpless and innocent and less capable of defending themselves than adults. The child in the mother's womb is the most helpless and innocent and the least capable of defending themselves. That is precisely why we must fight to protect them! Every person is part of God's plan.
