For most of Jesus' ministry, he remains in Galilee and areas with a predominantly Jewish population. Today, however, we see Jesus traveling through a heavily pagan area. This makes the utterance of faith in today's Gospel all the more astounding. "He has done all things well." In this story, a deaf man is brought to Jesus. This man is not without community! Despite communication difficulties due to a speech impediment, his people bring him before Jesus. Jesus lays hands upon the man and commands his broken body to change. "'Be opened!' Immediately the man's ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly." The community is stunned. They can't stop telling the story. The more Jesus asks them to settle down, the more they proclaim! The Jewish people expected a Messiah but a Messiah with very particular qualifications. The Greeks and pagans anticipated no such savior. There were no expectations to meet. They had a special capacity to be completely, utterly surprised. As Catholics, it can be easy to become accustomed to the songs and the prayers, to the routine of religious education drop-offs and Sunday Mass attendance. By now, we may have very particular expectations. When was the last time you allowed yourself to be surprised by God? Sometimes we are all like the deaf man in today's Gospel. God wants to speak to us, but we can't hear clearly. In your prayer this week, go before God honestly. Give yourself permission to drop your expectations and assumptions. Ask Him to renew your faith to show you how, in your life, "He has done all things well." 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Holy Spirit Faith Formation will begin on September 30th: Elementary grades K-5 will meet at 10:15 A.M. First Communion-grade 2; Parents and children will meet in the gym at 10:15 A.M.. Children will meet their Catechists and go to their class room while the parents attend their orientation meeting. We will also be having our Faith Formation Kickoff event this same day! We will have a family bowling event sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit from 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. at Arterial Lanes in Gloversville. Please join us for an afternoon of fun as we gather back together from our summer break. This event is for ALL children and teens in our programs; K-10th grades and their families! Youth Ministry classes will begin October 14th. Grades 6-8 will meet 6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Grades 9-10 will meet 7:15 P.M.-8:15 P.M. Registration materials and letters have been mailed to everyone who was registered last year. Please call the Faith Formation Office at if you are not currently registered or did not receive the mailing. FRIDAY S TABLE: During the entire month of September, the Hannaford Market in Gloversville will donate $1.00 for every reusable Fight Hunger bag that is purchased. We all use them and can certainly use more. Please encourage your family and friends to buy the Fight Hunger reusable bag at Hannaford in September. The Hannaford Market has always been very generous to the Friday s Table Program. When in the store, please express your gratitude. It s been 20 years since the first meal was served at Friday s Table. We are going to celebrate! Please save the date: Sunday, October 14th. We will be having a 20th Anniversary party and anyone and everyone who ever worked at Friday s Table is invited. Please spread the word to your team members. OUR COUNTRY NEEDS OUR PRAYERS: Please join us to pray the Rosary to Our Lady of Fatima on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00 A.M. at the Trackside Homes meeting room in Johnstown. Holy Trinity Faith Formation will begin on Sunday, September 23rd for grades 1-6 at 9:00 A.M. Grades 7-10 will begin on September 30th at 9:00 A.M. This is a great opportunity for children to perform with the Mohawk Valley Chorus, make new friends and receive voice instruction. (Membership dues only $10 for the year). Mohawk Valley Chorus: Singers wanted! No audition-just come to rehearsal; three concerts performed each year; Christmas, Classics & Pops; Membership dues $50 for the year. See information for both groups on the Church bulletin boards. Be Sure to Register for Hearts Aflame Hearts Aflame is only a few weeks away! It is important to register in advance. This historic gathering is for everyone in our diocese. Led by Bishop Scharfenberger, the event s primary focus is on our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. It is a time of joy, fellowship, prayer, and unity. This will be a time of spiritual renewal for our whole diocese. Register at rcda.org/heartsaflame or pick up a registration form at the entrance of the churches or in the parish offices. The Holy Trinity Rosary Society will meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 P.M. in the hall meeting room. All members are requested to attend.
