It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find themselves in that exact situation in today's Gospel. The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they need time to recover and refresh. "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager crowds discover their location. Jesus is well aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd, "His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd." The rest break is over. "He began to teach them many things." For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have it taken away abruptly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn't being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He offers them -- and us -- a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of Christ's life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world" (On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus' choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the marginalized, and priority of people's needs over personal preference. These aren't abstract ideals. They're lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond? We will be welcoming Fr. Matthew Wetsel as our new Pastor of Holy Trinity and Holy Spirit next weekend! We wish Fr. Don Czelusniak the best as he ventures on to this new chapter of his life and we thank him for his many years of service. If you need information about any of our programs the best way to contact our staff is to the parish at or access the addresses above for Ann Simonson and Cindy Kollar. Check our parish websites (Holy Spirit) -OR- (Holy Trinity) Have a safe and happy summer. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: This year s program will be open to all children in the service area of the Twin City Council of Churches. It will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown, August 6th-10th, 9:00 A.M 12:00 noon. Children ages 4-11 are welcome to attend as participants. Adolescents ages are welcome to participate as volunteers. There is NO FEE to participate. If you would like to attend please obtain a form from the church or parish offices, fill out the registration form and either drop it off at the parish office or put it in the offertory basket. FREE BOOKS: As we make room for our offices to move to the school building, we have been cleaning out! Over the next few weeks, there will be tables set up in the breezeway with free books for anyone to take. As the tables empty, we will fill them back up until the books are gone. Part time Office Assistant Opening: St. Kateri National Shrine & Historic Site, Rt. 5, Fonda is looking for a part time office assistant to start immediately. Hours are Mon. Fri., 9:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. and occasional help on weekends. Must be internet/social media savvy and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and QuickBooks is required. We are seeking faithful committed adorers, will you be one? For more information, call Ann Jones at A Visible Sign of Heaven: Every Mass is a forestaste of heaven, as the saints gather around the Lamb before the throne of God. As we saints-in-the-making gather for the Eucharistic Congress on September 22nd, we hope to make visible that reality in a special way. Bishop Sharfenberger s desire is that Catholics from every parish will gather in worship of God and celebration of our faith. All are invited to attend. Coffee Hour has started on July 1st and run through August after both Masses at Holy Trinity Church. We are in need of volunteers to host each week.
