PASTOR S MESSAGE: 1st Sunday of Lent As we enter into this Lenten season of penance and self-denial, we're reminded that the God we follow is no stranger to these things. In this Sunday's Gospel, we see the temptations of Jesus which have parallels throughout Scripture and in our own lives. The apostle John warns against temptations to sensual lust, enticement of the eyes, and a pretentious life (cf. 1 John 2:16). Before Eve plucks the fruit from the tree, she hears it is good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom (cf. Genesis 3:6). The temptations of Jesus are our own. "Turn these stones to bread." Here is the lure of bodily comfort, like good food or sensual lust. It's the simplest of temptations because it's instinctual. We want good for our bodies! But there may be times these bodily goods don't serve the higher good for our souls. The leap "from the temple parapet" would entice the eye of the person watching. A feat like this would prove Jesus' Messianic ability. His popularity could be a shortcut to the cross. We might not be daredevils, but we want people to like us and be impressed by us. Do we sacrifice our values along the way? To "bow and worship" the devil - and so claim power and a pretentious life - seems like a dramatic temptation. Not everyone may feel enticed by power in the professional sense, but all of us want control. A volunteer team can feel just as intense as the boardroom! How often do we prefer to be in control of our lives (and perhaps even the lives of others), rather than allow God to be God? When we consider areas of temptation and sin, it's not to feel ashamed. The temptation in the desert reminds us that we are not alone and that the strength of Jesus can be our strength, too. STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be held at Holy Spirit at 12:10 P.M. Friday afternoons and at Holy Trinity on Friday evenings during Lent at 5:30 P.M. in the Church. A lite soup supper and a movie will follow stations each week at Holy Trinity. SATURDAY, APRIL 6TH, Father Matt will lead a Lenten mini-retreat following the First Saturday Mass at 8:30 A.M. at Holy Trinity. The retreat will run from 9:30 A.M.-12:00 Noon. PILGRIMAGE OPPORTUNITY: Fr. Matt will be leading a pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes, and Barcelona from October 6 October 15, For more information, please speak with Fr. MOTHER TERESA S CLOSET: We are looking for additional help on the following Wednesdays, April 3, May 8 and June 5 for Mother Teresa s Closet distribution days. A few more hands would make a big difference. We are also reaching out to our young people who may be on vacation. If you could lend a hand on one of those Wednesdays, we would greatly appreciate it. Distribution hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thank you to all of you who constantly donate the products we need to give to those in need. 4 FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator First Sunday of Lent HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator PRAYER ROCKS: The Emmaus Kara Team has made prayer rocks with each student s name on them who will be attending the Emmaus Retreat March 15th-17th. Please take one home with you and pray for that particular teen as he/she prepares to meet Jesus on the Road to Emmaus. The prayer rocks can be found in baskets by each entrance of the church. Please keep the team in your prayers as Jesus works through each of us to help our young people CONFIRMATION CLASS: We had to cancel our Confirmation Class last Saturday due to illness. The class has been re-scheduled in two parts taking place on Monday, March 11th 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. and Monday, March 25th 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. The classes will be held in Spirit Central. The parent portion will take place the second Monday, March 25th 6:30 P.M.-8:00 P.M. TALENT SHOW: We will be having our Holy Spirit s Got Talent Show on Thursday, March 21st at 6:00 P.M. in the gym. We are looking for your talent! Please contact Ann Simonson at A.S.A.P. if you would like to be a part of our show. PIZZA SALE: The Youth Ministry Teens will be working the Pizza Sale on Friday, March 29th. We need teens to work from 3:30 P.M.-6:30 P.M. and also families to bake cookies or brownies for dessert. Families please tell all your friends to come an support the Youth Ministry Program. Thank You! CHOIR: Choir rehearsals for the Holy Thursday and Good Friday liturgies, which will be held this year at Holy Trinity, will begin on Friday, March 8th at 1:30 P.M. in the parish center at Holy Trinity. Anyone interested in taking part in the music ministry for the combined services is cordially invited. Date Sponsor March 15th Holy Name Society March 22th K of C March 29th Faith Formation THE CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES of Holy Trinity will attend their Confirmation Retreat and attend mass Sunday, March 10th at Siena College. Please keep these young people in your prayers. SUNDAY MARCH 24th the children in grades 3 &4 will celebrate their class mass at 10:00 A.M. and the Confirmation candidates along with their sponsors will be presented to the parish at the 10:00 A.M. Mass and given a blessing by Father Matt. Please pray for all of our young people. All are welcome to join us for these celebrations. LIVING STATIONS: Rehearsals have begun. Faith Formation students in grades 3 and up are invited to participate. Contact Ronnie Quinn or the Parish office if you are interested. ADULT FAITH FORMATION: Holy Spirit meets on Tues. at 10:00 A.M. in the Café. Holy Trinity meets on Wed. at 6:30 P.M. in the Parish Center. Please join us! 33 DAYS TO MORNING CONSECRATION TO JESUS. The program involves a short video and discussion period each week followed by some independent reading during the week. We will meet following Wednesday devotions from 3:45 P.M.-5:15 P.M. beginning in Gloversville in the Café. When devotions move to Johnstown in April, 33 Days will move to Johnstown in the parish office meeting room. Please call the offices to express your interest. We need to order books for the program. EASTER FLOWER DONATIONS: Please place your donation in an envelope or a plain envelope with the name of the person you would like to remember and your name as you would like it to appear in the Easer Flower Booklet and drop it in the collection basket. Requests should be made by Monday, April 15th. AN IRISH CELEBRATION: On March 12th, the Men s Group invites the parish families and friends to the Holy Trinity Hall for a Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner. Social hour starts at 5:00 P.M. with dinner to follow at 6:00 P.M. $8.00 per person, $20.00 for immediate family. You may obtain tickets at the Holy Trinity parish office or after both masses on Sunday, March 3rd & 10th. A maximum of 130 tickets will be sold. Music will be provided by the Gary McCoy Band, playing traditional Irish Music.
