May 2nd Holy Spirit ~ June 6th Holy Trinity PASTOR S MESSAGE: 3rd Sunday of Easter "Why do questions arise in your hearts?" After the Resurrection, the Apostles experienced their fair share of incredulity. Jesus had died-john had been there-and now the tomb was empty. What should they believe? Was the Jesus before them truly real? And who was Jesus really? It's no surprise that the Apostles were initially "startled and terrified" to the extent that they "thought that they were seeing a ghost." Jesus has compassion on his confused friends. Once he affirms his non-ghostly identity--"look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself"-- Jesus gets down to business. He has risen from the dead, but life would not continue as normal. Throughout Jesus' ministry, he spoke in parables and veiled prophetic language. His followers likely thought much of his words were metaphors, some symbolism for the person and their relation to God. Now Jesus has something else in mind. He "opened their minds to understand the scriptures," making known the connections between his own words and deeds and "everything written about [him] in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms." Why now? Why this increased depth of understanding? The answer lies in the shifting role of the Apostles. "You are witnesses of these things." The treasury of truth is no longer Jesus' responsibility alone but our own. Then and there, the Apostles are appointed to proclaim the death and resurrection of Jesus, the forgiveness of sins and the mercy of God. This message is no longer for only the Jewish people but "all the nations." 2018 World Day of Prayer for Vocations Next week the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priest hood and religious life? Pray for the priest who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead. Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. Encourage children, grandchildren or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God s call Synod on Youth & Vocations This fall, hundreds of bishops will gather in Rome for a special synod on Young People, Faith and Vocational Discernment. Their purpose is to discuss the ways that young people encounter Jesus in today s world, and to ensure the Church is helping them to discover their vocations. The synod begins in October. At the Easter Vigil the following adults received their Sacraments of Initiation. Catechumen Amber Marie Przybylowicz was reborn to a new life in Christ in the Sacrament of Baptism. She and candidate Anna Rose Gabriella Moudgil, were both sealed with the Gifts of the Spirit in Confirmation and nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. We pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to nurture their faith as they continue their journey into a deeper and abiding relationship with Jesus. MOTHER TERESA S CLOSET: We are currently in need of toilet paper, paper towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine products, tissues, and monetary donations. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Third Sunday of Easter HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Sunday, April 15th, Fr. Matt Wetzel will be coming to do a Walk through the Mass with our 6th-10th graders and their families at 7:00 P.M. in the Church of the Holy Spirit. This will be class for the evening. There will be a retreat for all teens in the 7th & 8th grade Youth Ministry classes at Holy Trinity Parish on April, 22nd, in the Parish hall. The retreat will begin at 3:00 P.M. and conclude at 7:00 P.M. (after the teen mass). More information and permission slips will be mailed home. The First Communion Stations for both parishes will be held on Saturday, April 21st., at the Church of the Holy Spirit in the gym. If you haven t all ready signed up, please call Ann or Cindy. Time slots are available at 9:00 A.M., 10:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. Sunday, April 22nd, we will celebrate a joint teen mass at Holy Trinity Parish at 6:00 P.M. The Abortion Expansion Act was not included in the recently passed NYS budget. The next Rachel s Vineyard Retreat for those affected by abortion will be held May 4-6.
