PASTOR S MESSAGE: THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up." Did you grow up in a small town? Whenever you see stories of tight-knit communities, a common refrain is that everybody knows everybody and that's very difficult to change. If you leave and return, people expect you to be and act a certain way, and it's strange for them if you do not. In today's Gospel, we see that Jesus was already moving "in the power of the Spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He...was praised by all." His ministry has begun! News of his growing popularity must have proceeded him to Nazareth. Upon his arrival, he "went according to his custom into the synagogue on the Sabbath day." For the first few moments, he is what they expect - their hometown boy returning to pay his respects. As was common of men at the time, he takes a turn reading a passage of Sacred Scripture. It is a bold passage, one he selects intentionally. "He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me." After reading about holy anointing, liberation for the poor and prisoners, and physical healings, Jesus does the unthinkable. "'Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.'" We are all called to imitate Christ wherever we are. This might mean doing the unexpected! All too often we're content with the daily status quo, and so are the people around us. When we take a stand for Christian values, change our lifestyle to reflect the Gospel, and work for justice in society, we may make others uncomfortable. But Jesus doesn't call us to the same life we lived yesterday or the year before that. He is calling all of us - each and every one of us - to deeper conversion of heart. No matter what other people expect, will you love in the Spirit of the Lord today? We welcome Father Nonito Albalate Bersola to our parishes this weekend to speak on behalf of FOOD FOR THE POOR. There will be a youth mass at 11:30 A.M. at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Grades K-5 Will have class. Sunday, February 3rd at 9:00 A.M. there will be a meeting for the parents of our Confirmation candidates in the parish Hall at Holy Trinity. I ask that at least one parent attend. Saturday, February 9th at 12:00 P.M. The Church of the Holy Spirit and Holy Trinity Parish will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please keep these children and families in your prayers. EMMAUS RETREAT - We are proud to announce that this year s Emmaus Retreat will be our 20th!! This year s retreat will again be held at Camp-of-the-Woods in Speculator on March 15-17, 2019! Any adult who feels called to help lead our teens closer to Christ during this special weekend is invited to join our team. Also, any teen that has been on an Emmaus retreat is invited to join our team and help us to make this retreat as special as it was to you! If you would like to be a part of the retreat but can t make today s meeting, please contact Ann Simonson to let her know (518) The Confirmation Class at Holy Trinity will be sponsoring a Valentine s dinner dance on Saturday, February 9th in the parish hall. Dinner includes Spaghetti, meatballs, salad and dessert. $10.00 single, $14 love bird special and $5.00 for children under 12. Tickets will be sold after Masses on February 3rd, or in the parish office. SAVE THE DATE: Café Chocolate will be held on Sunday, February, 10th 11:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M. in the gym. If you can make a chocolate item for this fundraiser, please contact Ann Simonson at SIMPLE SATURDAY SUPPERS: The Sisters of the Holy Spirit are sponsoring four simple Saturday Suppers beginning on January 12th and ending on Feb. 2nd, Dinners will be available 3:30 P.M.-5:30 P.M. The dinners are take out only (deliveries are available to Senior Citizen housing in Gloversville), cost only $5.00. Only 100 dinners will be served each Saturday and tickets for all the dinners will be available in the Parish office at Holy Spirit, by calling the Farley s at or at the door until they are sold out.
