PASTOR S MESSAGE: 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time We know the signs of defeat: slumped shoulders, downcast eyes, a chastened demeanor. For those of us sincerely trying to follow Jesus, defeat is inevitable. We commit to spending more time with our kids, but that one project still looms. We resolve to be a good person, but our selfishness strikes again. It can be easy to get discouraged over our moral failures. Today's Gospel is a small, intriguing look at this process in the life of St. Peter. First, Jesus' questions get the Apostles thinking about his true identity. This results in a confession of faith from Peter: "You are the Christ." Eager faith characterizes Peter's relationship with Jesus. First to follow, first to leap out of the boat, and, we know, first to deny. It's the latter tendency that manifests itself later in the Gospel. When Jesus predicts the Passion, "Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him." Jesus' rebuke in turn is stinging. While Peter's caution to Jesus is in private, Jesus intentionally turns back to the others as he declares, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Like Peter, we rarely get it right all the time. Peter understood that Jesus was the Messiah, but he had a false concept of what that Messiah would accomplish. Jesus wants to make sure the rest of the disciples don't follow down the wrong road. The Christian life is a difficult one, as Jesus later tells the crowds. "'Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself.'" Yet the mercy of God is abundant. If we renew our trust and our efforts after a fall, every defeat is transformed into redemptive grace. "Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it." The 46th Annual Diocesan Marriage Jubilee Celebration will be held Sunday, October 7th at 2:00 P.M. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany. Couples celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th or other special wedding anniversaries are invited to attend this celebration. Bishop Scharfenberger will celebrate the Mass and greet couples and their guest at a reception in the gathering area at the Cathedral immediately following Mass. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Holy Spirit Faith Formation will begin on September 30th: Elementary grades K-5 will meet at 10:15 A.M. First Communion-grade 2; Parents and children will meet in the gym at 10:15 A.M.. Children will meet their Catechists and go to their class room while the parents attend their orientation meeting. We will also be having our Faith Formation Kickoff event this same day! We will have a family bowling event sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit from 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. at Arterial Lanes in Gloversville. Please join us for an afternoon of fun as we gather back together from our summer break. This event is for ALL children and teens in our programs; K-10th grades and their families! Youth Ministry classes will begin October 14th.: Grades 6-8 will meet 6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Grades 9-10 will meet 7:15 P.M.-8:15 P.M. Registration materials and letters have been mailed to everyone who was registered last year. The Holy Trinity Rosary Society will meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 P.M. in the hall meeting room. All members are requested to attend. I am working on another service project, with my family, to raise money for a new pediatric scale for Nathan Littauer Foundation. For a donation of $5.00 you get a numbered ticket, or you can choose one (000through 999), and for the month of October 2018 you have that number. Starting October 1st and through October 31st, based on the daily NYS Lottery evening drawing, the three digit number chosen will result in a payout of one of the following amounts: $25.00, $50.00, or $ depending on the day of the week. There is also a daily $5.00 pay out, in October, for the number above and below the NYS Lottery evening number drawn. Monetary donations are also welcome. OUR COUNTRY NEEDS OUR PRAYERS: Please join us to pray the Rosary to Our Lady of Fatima on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00 A.M. at the Trackside Homes meeting room in Johnstown. We want to send our prayers along with Betty Burchell as she moves to her new home in Sunset Beach, NC. She has been a very active member of the Johnstown Community and a very devoted member of our parish. For the last four years, Betty has organized the First Saturday Rosary for our country and the annual America Needs Fatima public rosary. Be sure to thank her and wish her well.
