PASTOR S MESSAGE: 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time "The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." The law of love. That's what Jesus came to establish. In a religious milieu that was often marked by legalism and scrupulosity, Jesus brought a kind of freedom. He reminded us that the laws of religion are made to serve the ultimate goal of love: love for God and love for neighbor. Think about the Ten Commandments. This classical summary of God's rules for us can be divided into two types of laws. First come the laws about loving God: have no strange gods; don't take the Lord's name in vain; honor the Sabbath. Then come the laws about loving our neighbor: honor your parents; don't kill; don't commit adultery; don't steal; be honest; and don't covet your neighbor's spouse or property. When we follow the law of love that Jesus preaches today, all of this is taken care of. If we loved God with our whole heart, mind, and soul, for example, there would be no room left for false gods. There would be no bitterness or apathy leading us to disrespect God's name or to fail to worship him as he has asked. Similarly, if we loved our neighbors as ourselves by following the Golden Rule, then we would naturally respect them instead of lying, killing, coveting, or the like. Ultimately, all the dos and don'ts of the law are just specific guidelines describing what love looks like. This is very helpful for those times when love doesn't come so easily to us. When we struggle with having our heart in the right place, the Ten Commandments give us direction. But as Jesus instructs us today, the goal is to grow in the kind of love that naturally leads us to want to do what's best. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator The Youth Ministry Program and the Mother s of Faith In Action group will have their Trunk or Treat event Sunday, October 29 th, 6:00 P.M. 7:00 P.M. for our K-5 Faith Formation families. Sunday, November 12th, the 6th grade Faith Formation class will celebrate their class mass at 10:00 A.M. at Holy Trinity. We invite all families to celebrate this celebration. Soul Singers Youth Choir has started practicing on Saturday mornings at 9:00 A.M. at Holy Trinity. Please join us! Sunday, November 12th we will celebrate our first teen mass at The Church of the Holy Spirit at 6:00 P.M. Our Celebrant will be Fr. Matthew Wetsel. All are welcome to join us. RETREAT DAY: The Youth Ministry Program will be having a retreat for 9 th and 10 th graders on Sunday, November 19 th. We will start with Mass at 11:30 A.M. and end at 5:15 P.M. The topic for this retreat is How to be a Cathlete. We will have a guest speaker. All 9 th and 10 th graders are expected to participate in this event. There will be no classes that evening for junior or senior high teens. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Again, any questions, call Ann Simonson. The Mother s of Faith in Action group is hosting a Ladies Night Out paint and sip fund raising event on Monday, November 20 th from 6:00 P.M. -9:00 P.M. in the school building. Sunday, November 5th, there will be a retreat team meeting at 11:00 A.M. (following the 10:00 Mass) in the Faith Formation office. Those presently on the team and any new members who are in grades 11 or 12, who may want to be involved in planning and implementing retreats for their peers are invited to attend. If you are interested in being on the retreat team but cannot attend the meeting please call Cindy Kollar at HOLY TRINITY ROSARY SOCIETY: We will be taking orders for the book Drinking With the Saints. by Michael P. Foley. Samples will be available for viewing in the parish offices. The cost is $25 payable with your order. Halloween has its origins in the ancient pagan Celtic and Roman fall festivals which commemorated the new year and the passing of the dead. Pope Boniface VI set November 1 as All Saint's Day, known as All Hallowsmas, from Middle English Alholowmesse. When November 2 was made All Souls Day 200 years later, the three days' celebration was called Hallowmas. The customs of Halloween, costumes, food and parties evolved over time, some rooted in ancient rites, others in remembrance of those who had died. These pagan feasts were Christianized by new meanings, although today it remains largely a secular holiday. ~Rev.
