The Super Bowl. TV talent shows. Your son's Little League championship. We live in a culture set on competition. The desire to "be the best" goes beyond hobbies and into politics, the corporate world, and parenting comparisons at the park. This desire is as old as the human race, and it surely arose in Jesus' day. While Biblical society was significantly less open and upwardly mobile than our own, power was attractive. From what we know, many of Jesus' disciples had come from lowly backgrounds. Now they followed an increasingly popular rabbi who seemed primed to do something big. Jesus does his best to dissuade their high hopes by prophesying his own defeat. "The Son of Man is to be handed over and they will kill him." Internalizing the message proves challenging for the disciples, and their attention remains fixed on earthly glory." They [discuss] among themselves on the way who was the greatest." True to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their heads. "'If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.'" We have heard these Biblical principles before. Do we believe them? In our professional lives, do we do whatever we can to get ahead, or are we concerned with the entire team succeeding? In the lives of our children, are we more concerned with victory or with building character? Jesus doesn't condemn success, but he reframes it. "'Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.'" Today's Gospel is a reality check. In God's eyes, our success will not be measured by worldly output alone but by how much love and service we offer to others in the process. The 46th Annual Diocesan Marriage Jubilee Celebration will be held Sunday, October 7th at 2:00 P.M. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany. Couples celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th or other special wedding anniversaries are invited to attend this celebration. Bishop Scharfenberger will celebrate the Mass and greet couples and their guest at a reception in the gathering area at the Cathedral immediately following Mass. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Holy Spirit Faith Formation will begin on September 30th: Elementary grades K-5 will meet at 10:15 A.M. First Communion-grade 2; Parents and children will meet in the gym at 10:15 A.M. Children will meet their Catechists and go to their class room while the parents attend their orientation meeting. Faith Formation Kickoff event Sept. 30th! A Family bowling event sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. at Arterial Lanes in Gloversville. This event is for ALL children and teens in our programs; K-10th grades and their families! Youth Ministry classes will begin October 14th.: Grades 6-8 will meet 6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Grades 9-10 will meet 7:15 P.M.-8:15 P.M. Catechetical Sunday will be celebrated at Holy Spirit September 30th at the 11:30 A.M. Mass. All Catechists and Youth ministry team members are invited to attend. Following mass there will be cider and donuts for all members in the gym. I am working on another service project, with my family, to raise money for a new pediatric scale for Nathan Littauer Foundation. For a donation of $5.00 you get a numbered ticket, or you can choose one (000through 999), and for the month of October 2018 you have that number. Starting October 1st and through October 31st, based on the daily NYS Lottery evening drawing, the three digit number chosen will result in a payout of one of the following amounts: $25.00, $50.00, or $ depending on the day of the week. There is also a daily $5.00 pay out, in October, for the number above and below the NYS Lottery evening number drawn. Monetary donations are also welcome.
